We must work harder to attract Broos' attention: Kaizer Chiefs' Cele
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele says the club's players are not discouraged by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos overlooking them for national team selection, insisting they will continue to work hard to persuade him otherwise. Broos has continuously omitted Chiefs players for national team camps, the most recent of which included the friendly matches against Tanzania and Mozambique at Peter Mokaba Stadium. The Belgian named Chiefs trio of Bruce Bvuma, Yusuf Maart and Mduduzi Shabalala in his preliminary squad, but they did not make the cut for the final 23. With the absence of all Mamelodi Sundowns' players, who form the core of the Bafana squad, Broos cast his net wide for talent and depth and still there was no space for Chiefs' players. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Thabo Cele feature in the latest Read My Lips episode, and it's pure entertainment! ๐ซข Watch the full episode now: @Vodacom @KaizerChiefs #AlwaysHome โ Vodacom Soccer (@VodacomSoccer) June 10, 2025 Broos said at the time Amakhosi's poor season, ending in ninth place in the Betway Premiership, and lack of form of their players, meant on merit he had found it hard to pick their players. 'For the moment I think I can't select the players of Kaizer Chiefs," he said. "I hope they produce a better season next year. OK, they won the [Nedbank] cup, but I think that was the only highlight in the season for Chiefs. All the rest was not so good.' Cele, who joined Amakhosi in the January transfer window, said Chiefs' players would take this as motivation to do better to be selected in the future. 'Maybe he [Broos] has a point because we are a big club that has not been winning,' Cele said during the Thabo Thalente annual games in Durban. The tournament was launched this month by Cele and his friend, Orlando Pirates midfielder Thalente Mbatha, for amateur teams in their home township of KwaMashu. 'In small clubs, there are not many expectations and Broos looks at individuals only. We strive to be at the right level. The team has to win something and we just have to continue working hard. 'Whatever happened in the short time I'm grateful for the people I work with because everyone at the club is involved and the six months I have been with the club has been a blessing to me.' The 28-year-old KZN Academy product made 15 appearances for Chiefs after joining them in January having spent eight-and-a-half seasons in Europe, helping them to lift the Nedbank Cup. 'For me to come back to Chiefs, the mission was to help the club win trophies because we know this is the biggest club in the country even though we've not been doing well in terms of winning things. But we know this is a team that must win trophies. 'We are still on that mission and I'm happy we won the trophy after 10 years. It is positive and encourages us going forward to know we can challenge for more things next season.'

Khumalo confident Broos will pick promising Cosafa players for Bafana
Despite failing to win the Cosafa Cup, losing Sunday's final at Free State Stadium 3-0 to Angola, Bafana Bafana B coach Vela Khumalo feels his side had a good tournament and several players raised their hands for selection to Hugo Broos's senior combination. Khumalo emphasised the invaluable experience his squad gained. 'I think this was a good tournament,' he said. 'It was more about us seeing other players that we need to have for Bafana Bafana to beef up. 'I think credit must go to the boys being called from recess and bringing them in for two days [and then] to come in and start playing. South Africa coach Vela Khumalo reflecting on their 3โฃโ0โฃ loss in the #COSAFACup2025 final against Angola! #SABCSportFootball #COSAFACup โ SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 15, 2025 'The preparations went well. I think people can see we have a big number of players who are ready to help Bafana. 'These are the tournaments that are going to help us identify our strong points. I think we played good football, and one can say that out of the tournament itself, what we are lacking is that we are not scoring goals. 'We will need to get strikers who will come and score the goals.' Khumalo said it will be up to senior national coach Broos to decide which players he might select from the Cosafa squad, but he is confident some will be called. ๐ โ๐๐๐ธ๐ฝ๐ธ โ๐โ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ฅ โผโโถโ: Black Sable Antelopes are now in control of the match! SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) June 15, 2025 'This [tournament] was more for Broos to be able to identify one or two players, to say these are the ones I can take to Bafana Bafana first team. 'This tournament is definitely something that is helping us because we have a large number of players who are not getting call-ups, and if they are called for this kind of tournament, it is a plus for us and the country. 'So it is up to Broos to say who he needs to pick and [where to] beef up.' Players Ime Okon, Aden McCarthy and Kamogelo Sebelebele had a strong tournament.

Bafana Bafana youthful new-look team hit the right notes during recent international window
Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressed for Bafana. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has changed the outlook of the national team as they are now expected to do well with every passing game. Bafana hosted Tanzania and Mozambique to a stalemate and 2-0 win respectively during the recent FIFA international window. That was pleasing given the fact that Broos' team was largely made up of new and young faces. So, that's why we look at three things we learned from the two friendlies... The future is bright Broos has been big on the integration of youngsters into the Bafana fold from day one, and that's why he organised his team around the youth. So, when an opportunity presented itself for him to inject young blood into the team arose this month, the Belgian grabbed it with both hands. He has been impressed with most of the youngsters - so much so that he said there are some players that he can't leave out of the team in the next window. Goalkeepers changing the narrative It's been widely reported that Bafana has a goalkeeping conundrum, and that's why the team struggles when No 1 Ronwen Williams is not around. But such was the commendable performance of trio Sipho Chaine, Renaldo Leaner and Ricardo Goss that they kept clean sheets during the two friendlies. Sure, Broos is yet to single out his No 2 who'll deputise for Williams when he returns to the Bafana team, but he has a nice selection headache.

Bafana Bafana's camaraderie leaves Broos with selection headache ahead of World Cup qualifiers
BAFANA Bafana Hugo Broos is looking ahead to the future with excitement after a successful Polokwane camp. | BackpagePix The camaraderie that's brewing at Bafana Bafana with every passing camp pleases coach Hugo Broos who now has a nice selection headache. Bafana's relatively young and new-look team completed an impressive international window at Peter Mokaba Stadium in the last 10 days. They hosted Tanzania to a stalemate in the first international friendly last Friday, before beating Mozambique 2-0 at the same venue on Tuesday night. It turned out to be an impressive camp for Broos and his staff as they had doubts about the team's unity after most players got their maiden call ups. But such is the continuous camaraderie between the Bafana players, who are usually rivals at their domestic clubs, Broos' fears were allayed with no time. 'That (urge to play) will bring the level higher - certainly. The only thing that I want to say, which is amazing, is that there are 23 friends. That is something special,' Broos said. 'I said it already before that it's not easy to be friends with your rival because there are two defenders, (midfielders), strikers and so on. 'This is amazing. After the first two-three days, the conversations started to be louder, laughs were louder and jokes were there. 'So that was nice to see as the coach because you know when that happens off the pitch, you can be sure that on the pitch you have a team as well. 'So I am pretty sure that on Friday and today (Tuesday) we saw that we have a team that plays for each other and tries to win the game. That makes me very happy!' Broos will be happier heading into the next window in September in which they'll face Lesotho and Nigeria in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. By then, most of the leagues across the globe, including the PSL, will have have resumed for the 2025/2026 season, extending Broos' selection pool. 'Everything is positive about the past week, and this is something that will make my job very difficult in the next months,' the 73-year-old explained. 'When you see that there are 23 players there - you'll see that there are other 23 players who are either with their clubs or at home. You can choose between 40 players. 'This will then become difficult because you have to drop players in September - players who'll probably deserve to be there. 'But okay, I have to make the choice. That, however, also means that players will also be more motivated as they'll know that there'll be guys behind them, waiting to play.' The recent camp was largely made up of Orlando Pirates players due to the fact that their rivals from Mamelodi Sundowns are away on FIFA Club World Cup duties. Sure, Sundowns' troops have been the cornerstone of Bafana in the recent past, but their omission from the recent camp is not the only thing that excites Broos as he maps the future. 'When I said already that the job will bcome more difficult, there are Sundowns players who played a very important role in the past,' Broos said. 'That is not only for the Sundowns players - but little by little the team started to get older. I think when I saw the team selection in March, there were over 13 players over 30 years. 'So that means it's time, little by little, to get the team younger. What we saw now - which was important - is to see how the players will react when they play for Bafana. 'There are some players that we certainly have to keep. Okay, we have to drop others. But I have never been afraid to drop players. 'I think of the collective side of the team, and not the player. We managed to create a good team, so we'll try to do it now also - even when there are important games.'

'I couldn't believe it'
'Since I started playing football, this is my first Man of the Match,' added the TS Galaxy defender. TS Galaxy defender Khulumani Ndamane is making the most of his second chance with Bafana Bafana. ALSO READ: Komphela vows to maintain Sundowns' style at Club World Cup The former Kaizer Chiefs youngster was dropped from Hugo Broos' Bafana squad in March for the Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin. This was not for footballing reasons, but because Ndamane, to the Bafana coach's disbelief, did not have a passport. Bafana's Broos calls on Ndamane Broos, however, has shown himself to be a coach who bears no grudges, and Ndamane was back in the squad for the June friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. And the Rockets defender rewarded the faith shown in him by Broos with a Man-of-the-Match performance in Friday's goalless draw with Tanzania at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. 'I was nervous, I don't want to lie because that was my first game playing for the national team,' said Ndamane. 'Actually, I couldn't believe that it was me (making my debut). But once we got into the pitch, I told myself that I'm not here by fluke, so I will play the way I know best. 'I had a good game and also received the Man of the Match award. So I was so happy. When they called me after the match and told me that I was Man of the Match, I couldn't believe it,' he added. 'I asked them if it was really me, and they confirmed it. Since I started playing football, this is my first Man of the Match, and it happened when I was playing for Bafana Bafana.' 'That made me happy, to receive it on my first call-up. I would like to thank all our supporters. I also promise to work hard and not disappoint. So they must keep on supporting me โฆ I am very grateful.' More debuts incoming With Broos promising every player in Bafana's squad an equal chance over these two games, it seems unlikely Ndamane, who played the full game against Tanzania will start Tuesday's game against Mozambique at the same venue. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Matthews relishing Dortmund clash It would make more sense, given the Bafana coach's words, if Orlando Pirates duo Nkosinathi Sibisi and Mbekezeli Mbokazi started the game. There could, indeed, be an entirely new first eleven, as Bafana look for a win against the Mambas.
