Ahead of the opener, the head coach of the Red and Gold sounded positive and yet cautious. 'This is the beginning of the season. We are trying to enhance the fitness levels of all the players. Coach Bino (Geroge) started training with the Indian players a couple of weeks ago. The Durand Cup is a very tough competition because only one team from each group can progress to the knockouts. We need to use our resources optimally and live up to East Bengal's legacy in the prestigious Durand Cup," Bruzon ahead of the match said on Tuesday. East Bengal have bolstered their squad during the transfer window with impressive Indian players, namely Bipin Singh, Edmund Lalrindika, Martand Raina, and Ramsanga, while adding few fresh overseas faces like Mohammed Rashid, Miguel Figueira and Kevin Sibille. Dimitrios Diamantakos and Saul Crespo are the foreign players still with the club from last season. 'We are trying to understand the fitness levels of all our players because the whole team assembled only two days before and the Durand Cup doesn't allow any mistakes. So it's about understanding who is ready to start and also how to improve the team during the 90 minutes of the game," Bruzon said When asked about the opposition, Bruzon said, 'South United have a lot of young players with a lot of energy. They have been practising for a longer period than us. So, of course, we need to show on the pitch the difference in the level of both teams. And for doing that, we have to play at our best." Who Are South United FC? Based in Karnataka, South United FC were established in 2012 and have built a reputation for their strong emphasis on youth development and grassroots programs. Over the years, they have participated in the BDFA Super Division and made appearances in tournaments like the Gadhinglaj United Cup, Puttaiah Memorial Cup and the I-League 2nd Division. They've finished runners-up in the BDFA Super Division on four occasions and continue to nurture emerging talent. With a young and energetic squad, they'll be looking to punch above their weight and test East Bengal FC's resolve right from the opening whistle. South United FC will look to give a good account of themselves in their debut appearance. Comprising of mostly youngsters from their academy. Players like Noel S, Euhan Kuruvilla, Rowan James. Tarun Kumar and Huzafah Ahmad Dar are the ones to watch out for in the side. Speaking ahead of the match, South United head coach, A. Kaja Mohindeen Bhadussa said, 'We've come with a young squad because this tournament is the perfect platform for exposure. It's about growth, development, and testing ourselves against strong opposition. More importantly, it's about embracing the spirit of sportsmanship, learning from every challenge, and respecting the game at the highest level." East Bengal will look to take the early advantage in the group, which also has Namdhari FC and Indian Air Force FT, while South United FC will look to create an upset on the very first day of the Durand Cup 2025.
