Mariners says pitcher Bryce Miller, outfielder Victor Robles nearing return from injuries

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Bryce Miller and outfielder Victor Robles are getting closer to returning from injuries. General Manager Justin Hollander updated the players' progress Tuesday ahead of the Mariners' series opener against the Chicago White Sox. Miller (2-5) has been dealing with right elbow inflammation and will make his second rehab start Thursday with Triple-A Tacoma. Hollander said the right-hander likely need another start before returning. 'No matter how much Bryce begs for that to be the last one,' Hollander said. 'Stuff looked top of the scale. He told me that was the best he's felt, including day one of spring training.' Robles has been out since an April after dislocating his left shoulder while making a play and being carted off the field. Hollander said Robles is expected to start his rehab assignment Aug. 12. He is batting .273 with three RBIs in 44 at-bats this season. 'The first couple of days will be DH days, mixed in outfield days,' Hollander said. 'Replicate spring training all over again.' Infielder Ryan Bliss is aiming for a rehab assignment in September, and utilityman Luke Raley, put on the 10-day IL on July 27, started hitting progression Tuesday and could join the team as early as this weekend against Tampa Bay. Hollander also said reliever Trent Thornton had successful surgery for an Achilles injury and will take six to eight months to recover. ___ AP MLB:

Mariners RHP Bryce Miller (elbow) heading back to IL

June 10 - Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller is heading back to the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. Manager Dan Wilson confirmed the news after Monday's 8-4 loss in 11 innings to the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It's the same issue as he had the last time. The cortisone shot wasn't as helpful as we had hoped," Wilson said, per the Seattle Times. Miller, 26, came off the injured list on May 31 and made two starts. He allowed five runs on six hits in five innings in his most recent effort, a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Angels last Friday. Miller is 2-5 with a 5.73 ERA through 10 starts in his third season with Seattle. He is 22-20 with a 3.82 ERA in 66 career appearances (all starts). The Mariners recalled right-hander Logan Evans, 24, from Triple-A Tacoma to start Tuesday's game against Arizona, with right-hander Bryan Woo's start pushed back to Wednesday. --Field Level Media

Angels' bullpen locks up victory over Mariners

June 7 - Nolan Schanuel's RBI single in the fifth inning gave the Los Angeles Angels their first lead of the night, and three scoreless innings by the bullpen finished off a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Friday in Anaheim, Calif. Travis d'Arnaud had two hits, including a two-run homer, and Chris Taylor singled, doubled and drove in a run to lead the Angels' offense, helping give starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks the 100th victory of his career. Hendricks (3-6) yielded four runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two. The Angels got one hitless inning apiece from Ryan Zeferjahn, Reid Detmers and Kenley Jansen (13th save). The trio combined to allow just one walk while striking out three. Seattle starter Bryce Miller (2-5) permitted five runs on six hits and a walk in five innings. He fanned two. The Mariners opened the scoring against Hendricks in the third inning on an RBI single by J.P. Crawford, but the Angels matched it in their half of the third on an RBI single by Zach Neto off Miller. The Mariners regained the lead in the top of the fourth after loading the bases with no outs. Rowdy Tellez drove in the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, with Jorge Soler making the catch just in front of the short fence near the right field foul pole. The second run of the inning scored when Leody Taveres grounded out, bringing in Cal Raleigh from third to give the Mariners a 3-1 lead. The Angels matched it again in the bottom of the fourth on d'Arnaud's two-run homer, tying the game at 3-3. The Mariners again took the lead at 4-3 in the fifth, getting a two-out RBI triple from Julio Rodriguez. Angels center fielder Jo Adell lost his glove over the fence trying to make the catch. The Angels responded again in the bottom of the fifth, getting an RBI double from Taylor and an RBI single from Schanuel for a 5-4 edge. Taylor just missed out on his third hit of the game in the sixth inning, but Rodriguez made a leaping catch at the fence in center field, robbing a home run. --Field Level Media
