Sean Payton reacts to Deion Sanders news: 'We're excited for him'
Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders announced Monday that he battled and beat bladder cancer. He has been cleared to coach without restrictions with the Buffs set to begin fall practices soon. Across town, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton said he sent a text message to Sanders after he heard the news. 'I'm proud of him, excited for him, happy for him," Payton said. "I consider him a close friend all the way back to when I first entered this league. Unfortunately, I started with Philly and he was in Dallas. Then I went to the Giants. We saw him all the way up until he retired. Then in Dallas when I was there, I had a chance to see his high school team play. Years later, they stopped in New Orleans and had a practice right after we practiced. They were on their way to Florida to open the season in an ESPN2 game. [I] really got to know him. "Our thoughts are with him because football is better with him. Colorado is better with him. It's impressive to watch him coach and teach. He was calling offensive plays at one point when I met him, and I kind of looked at him with a funny eye, but he enjoyed that. His son was like a sophomore at the time. It was great news to hear yesterday, and I know we're excited for him.' Sanders, a two-time Super Bowl champion and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback, started his coaching career at the high school level before spending three seasons at Jackson State, helping them reach two bowl games. He joined Colorado in 2023 and after going 4-8 in his first season, Sanders helped the Buffaloes improve to 9-4 last fall. Now entering Year 3 in Colorado, Sanders will look to improve on his 40-18 overall record at the college level. Social: Follow Broncos Wire on Facebook and Twitter/X! Former Colorado football walk-on turned fan favorite makes emotional career decision
Former walk-on running back Charlie Offerdahl is one of the many feel-good stories of Deion Sanders' tenure as Colorado's head coach. Offerdahl is one of the last players remaining from the previous regime, but perhaps surprisingly, is also a player with whom Sanders has a close relationship. On Tuesday morning, he made the emotional decision to retire from football due to serious concussion issues. The Colorado native was awarded a scholarship by Sanders last spring and played in 13 games for the Buffs last season, but his latest concussion was too much to overcome. In a speech to the entire Colorado football program, Offerdahl announced his decision. "Obviously, I haven't been here this summer," Offerdahl said in a video posted to Sanders' Instagram account. "If it's not obvious already, I won't be coming back this year. How serious this last concussion was and how many I've had leading up to it is pretty scary for me and my family, but I will be hanging it up." Offerdahl's freshman season was Colorado's 1-11 year in 2022, where he racked up 37 carries for 150 yards, which were the most for a walk-on in program history. He scored his only career touchdown last season against Utah. Offerdahl also announced that he is in the process of applying for dental school, and Sanders believes he can get his now former player some help on that front. "I love this man to life," Sanders said. "You guys know how I feel about the 'OBs,' the Original Buffs. If there's somebody out there that's in control of a dental school, I want to make sure we take care of him." After Sanders was not done making Offerdahl feel like family, he also announced the program would continue to honor Offerdahl's scholarship for the remainder of his time at Colorado. While the decision and announcement were an emotional moment for the entire Buffaloes' program, the loss will be felt on the field as well. Whether it was a missed opportunity in the transfer portal or not, Colorado did not bring in a true starting running back after the departure of Isaiah Augustave. Returning players like Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden look like the top two candidates, while incoming gadget-type players like Simeon Price and DeKalon Taylor are the depth options. Colorado opened fall camp Monday, and along with the quarterback battle, the running back room will be one to watch as practices ramp up. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Ten Colorado Buffaloes named to East-West Shrine Bowl watch list
Despite the losses of Shedeur Sanders and two-way star Travis Hunter to the NFL, the Colorado Buffaloes still have players with serious NFL potential. With that in mind, the prestigious East-West Shrine Bowl announced its preseason watch list Monday morning, and ten Buffs were among the top 1,000 candidates. The East-West Shrine Bowl is an annual college football all-star game that provides draft-eligible players with a final opportunity to compete in front of NFL scouts. The 2026 Shrine Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 27 at the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. Colorado had six players compete in the 2025 Shrine Bowl, including Shedeur and Shilo Sanders. Below are the ten Buffaloes who were named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1,000: QB Kaidon Salter Kaidon Salter is amid a quarterback competition against star freshman Julian Lewis, but after winning Conference USA MVP in 2023, the transfer quarterback looks to go out on a high note. RB Dallan Hayden Hayden showed flashes last year, and after Colorado lost their leading rusher to the transfer portal, he has a chance to be the Buffaloes' starting running back. OL Xavier Hill Hill joins the Buffs after a successful stint at Memphis, where his versatility was on full display. He can play every position on the offensive line and should start most games this year. CB Preston Hodge Hodge returns as Colorado's top option at the nickel position. LB Reginald Hughes Hughes and French are the projected top two inside linebackers on the Buffs roster. Their ability to form chemistry will be a major storyline during fall camp. CB DJ McKinney McKinney is set to take over for Travis Hunter as Colorado's top coverage cornerback. He could be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. DL Amari McNeill McNeill steps into a starting defensive tackle role, and his production will be needed for the Buffs to repeat as the Big 12 sack leaders. DL Jehiem Oatis After transferring from Alabama as the top defensive player in the portal (as of Dec. 18, 2024), Oatis has expectations to make an immediate impact.
