New Marianne Faithfull tracks to be released
Four new songs by Marianne Faithfull, the English singer best known for the 1960s hit As Tears Go By and who died earlier this year, will be released this summer, her son said on Friday. Faithfull, one of the most colourful personalities of London's Swinging '60s, endured homelessness, drug addiction and cancer before she passed away aged 78 in January. As the former girlfriend of the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, Faithfull gained notoriety for her escapades in the era of sex, drugs and rock and roll, but she also released 21 solo albums, won a Grammy nomination and had a film acting career. Faithfull had worked on the new recordings over the past year. They were inspired by her first two albums from 1965 and due to be revealed last month but plans were put on hold following her death, Decca Records said. "Marianne lived to create and perform music – it was her driving force and she never stopped," her son Nicholas Dunbar said in a statement. "Right up until the end she was looking forward to this release which now completes and celebrates her remarkable artistic career." Burning Moonlight, one of the new songs, which also gives its title to the EP, was inspired by the opening line of As Tears Go By. It was released on Friday, while the full digital EP will be released on June 6. "It's a good time to look back," Faithfull had said after completing the project, according to Decca Records. "It helps me to remember all the things I've done. I can't say I'm a particularly nostalgic person, but I am enjoying this period of reflection." Reuters

Four-song EP by Late Singer Faithfull to Be Released in April
A new four-song EP by British singer and actor Marianne Faithfull, who died in January, is to be released in April, with the title track out on Friday, her family announced. "As we grieve the loss of Marianne, we are pleased to announce the release of these songs which she worked on during the year before her death," said her son Nicholas Dunbar. "Marianne lived to create and perform music –- it was her driving force and she never stopped. Right up until the end she was looking forward to this release which now completes and celebrates her remarkable artistic career." Faithfull was an icon of Swinging Sixties culture and was known for her tempestuous relationship with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, said AFP. The "Burning Moonlight" EP will be released as a limited-edition vinyl on April 12 and worldwide digitally on June 6. The EP was originally due to be revealed in February but the announcement was put on hold following the singer's death on January 30. "We decided to bring the music full circle. One side of the EP would be inspired by her debut pop LP 'Marianne Faithfull' while the flip would honor her folk roots on 'Come My Way'," said the EP's executive producer Andrew Batt. The title song, available from Friday, is described as a "moving ballad of resilience and acceptance". "It's a good time to look back," Faithfull said after completing the project, according to the press release. "It helps me to remember all the things I've done. I can't say I'm a particularly nostalgic person, but I am enjoying this period of reflection." The singer got her first break in 1964, after being discovered by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Her first hit "As Tears Go By" written by Jagger and his fellow Rolling Stone Keith Richards, was followed with a string of successful singles, including "Come And Stay with Me", "This Little Bird" and "Summer Nights". She also acted in films including "The Girl on a Motorcycle" and theatre productions. She fell on hard times that included living in a squat and a heroin addiction following the end of her relationship with Jagger in 1970. But she returned with the classic album "Broken English" in 1979 and later reinvented herself as a jazz and blues singer with 1987's critically acclaimed "Strange Weather".

Marianne Faithfull's Burning Moonlight is a spookily beautiful gift from beyond the grave
The voice is smoky and blue, full of ancient wisdom married with devil-may-care insouciance. 'It's just the sort of mood I'm in,' sings Marianne Faithfull. 'Burning moonlight, like fire, like food.' It is wonderful to hear the late, great troubadour sing to us again, just a few weeks since we lost her, in a spookily beautiful gift from beyond the grave. Burning Moonlight, released today, is from an EP of recordings Faithfull made in her last year, before her death on January 30, age 78. We know that she was suffering from emphysema and long Covid-19, and had told me in an interview in 2021 that she was barely able to sing any more. The fact that she summoned up the strength to carry on making music says a lot about what a formidable character she was. Co-written by Faithfull (and two other writers) Burning Moonlight finds her pondering the creative need to live life on the edge. 'Burning moonlight to survive, walking in fire is my life.' There are hints of loneliness, sorrow and regret, as she tells us 'It seems I nearly had a plan' and 'wherever I go I'm alone', but there is a counterbalancing sense of resilience in the mysterious notion that 'burning moonlight' is the very purpose of her existence. The stark musical setting (produced by long-time collaborator Head, aka Howard Bullivant) harks back to the folk pop of her debut single, the Jagger and Richards composition As Tears Go By, from 1965. But there are six decades of life experience between that debut, and this swan song, and you can hear it in every note. An EP of four new songs will be released by Decca as limited-edition vinyl for Record Store Day on April 12, and will be made available worldwide as a digital EP on June 6. It includes two originals, Burning Moonlight and Love Is (the latter written by her grandson, Oscar Dunbar) and two folk songs, Three Kinsmen Bold (which she learnt from her father, Glynn Faithfull) and a new interpretation of She Moved Thru the Fair. There is often a sense that singing is a young person's game, particularly in the pop realm. Old voices grow weaker, more cracked. But Faithfull's singing is a reminder that the voice is a vehicle for our humanity, and when the singer has the ability to put themselves fully into the song, age can bring a majesty inaccessible to the young. Faithfull only really started sounding great when she lost the sweetness of her youthful tone and has rarely sounded better than on this utterly gorgeous end-of-life recording. Marianne Faithfull: posthumous EP to be released for Record Store Day
Four new songs recorded by Marianne Faithfull in the year prior to her death are to be released for Record Store Day on 12 April. Burning Moonlight was due for announcement in February, but postponed following Faithfull's death on 30 January at the age of 78. Her family requested the release of the music, which comes via Decca Records and will be available as a digital edition on 6 June. Following the completion of the project, Faithfull said: 'It's a good time to look back. It helps me to remember all the things I've done. I can't say I'm a particularly nostalgic person, but I am enjoying this period of reflection.' Faithfull's son Nicholas Dunbar said in a new statement: 'As we grieve the loss of Marianne, we are pleased to announce the release of these songs which she worked on during the year before her death. Marianne lived to create and perform music – it was her driving force and she never stopped. Right up until the end she was looking forward to this release which now completes and celebrates her remarkable artistic career.' The EP was inspired by Faithfull's first two solo albums, released on the same day on 15 April 1965. Her self-titled album was a pop record; Come My Way a folkier release. Each side of the new EP is inspired by one of the records. 'It was so unusual to start your career this way, so we decided to bring the music full circle,' said executive producer Andrew Batt, who worked alongside Head, Rob Ellis and Faithfull's grandson Oscar Dunbar. The first side takes its cues from Faithfull's pop history. The title track, released today, was inspired by the first line of her debut single As Tears Go By: 'It is the evening of the day.' The second song, Love Is, was written with Oscar Dunbar. The second, folk side includes the traditional song Three Kinsmen Bold, which Faithfull learned from her father Glynn, and a new interpretation of the Faithfull staple She Moved Thru' the Fair. Head first worked with Faithfull on her 2004 album Before the Poison. 'I'm so happy we found a time when Marianne felt able to write and sing again,' he said, referring to Faithfull's long battle with Covid-19, which left her hospitalised for 22 days in 2020. 'When she asked me to produce these songs, we were all aware that her health had made things difficult but, in true Marianne fashion, she persevered, and I think we were able to go in a new direction again – something she always tried to push herself to do throughout her long career.' The EP is Faithfull's first release since the album She Walks in Beauty with Warren Ellis, released in 2021.
