Premier League: Which teams got promoted to top flight from Championship?
Promotion to the Premier League remains one of the most financially rewarding achievements in global football, and for the 2024/25 EFL Championship season, 24 teams battled for the coveted three spots in the top flight. With the season now concluded, Burnley, Leeds United, and Sunderland have earned their place in the Premier League for the 2025/26 campaign. Teams promoted to the Premier League Leeds United Burnley Sunderland Leeds end season as champions Leeds United claimed the Championship title in dominant fashion, finishing the season with 100 points and securing their return to the Premier League after two years in the second tier. Having narrowly missed promotion last season via the playoffs, Leeds bounced back strongly this time. Joel Piroe led the scoring charts for the Whites with 19 goals, while Daniel James and Manor Solomon also made key attacking contributions. Burnley fetch automatic promotion back to the top flight Burnley joined them through the second automatic promotion spot, narrowly missing out on the title due to goal difference. Their promotion comes just a year after being relegated from the Premier League. It's the fourth consecutive season that has seen Burnley switch divisions. Midfielder Josh Brownhill was instrumental in their campaign, scoring 18 goals and leading a team packed with experienced players and impactful loanees. Sunderland grab final PL spot with playoff final win The final promotion place went to Sunderland, who triumphed 2-1 over Sheffield United in a dramatic playoff final. A last-gasp winner by Tom Watson sealed their return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence. Sunderland's rise is particularly remarkable given they were in League One just a few seasons ago, highlighting their steady rebuild and successful resurgence. The next big challenge for these sides will be to maintain their level of performances in order to battle with the other 17 teams from the top flight and try to mainatin their Premier League status for the future.

‘For sure' – Heimir Hallgrimsson explains belief in Ireland's World Cup chances despite alarming trend
HEIMIR HALLGRIMSSON believes he can turn water into wine — because he has done it before. With the club football season wrapping up in most countries, the Ireland boss has been able to take stock of the fortunes of his players over the course of the campaign. Advertisement 2 Hallgrimsson maintains Irish players have enough ability to make it to the 2026 World Cup 2 Will Smallbone is one of the eight Irish players to suffer Premier League relegation It does not make for great reading. Earlier this week, That was what LOI academy manager Will Clarke calculated is needed for the national team to be successful, based on studying the next ten best-performing countries after powerhouses England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. There are 16 spots available for European countries at the World Cup finals next summer and Hallgrimsson believes he can mould his meagre resources into a side that can be one of them. Advertisement Read More On Irish Football Hallgrimsson — who steered his native Iceland to Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup — said: 'Yes, I think we have the material to qualify, for sure. 'From experience, I have qualified with less talent than we have here. So that's my take on this question. Obviously, we would like more players to play at a higher level. 'And I think more players will play at a higher level. They're still not peaking in age and all of that. So I'm pretty confident that we will have more players playing more minutes in the top leagues.' If that is to happen, it will have to be through the transfer market. Advertisement Most read in Football Half of the 16 Irish players who featured in the English Premier League this season suffered relegation, with just Josh Cullen and Alan Browne winning promotion to the top flight. But Hallgrimsson is unconcerned and believes many of the players with sides which dropped down to the Championship had strong individual campaigns. AC Milan sack manager Sergio Conceicao with 25-second VIDEO as brief statement is released He said: 'I think the players that got promoted, the likes of Josh Cullen will play more or less all the minutes for Burnley in the Prem. 'I think as well, the players who were in the teams that got relegated, it was not the players that were that bad, and some of the players were injured, like the likes of Sammie Szmodics. When he played, he played really well. Advertisement 'Dara O'Shea played really well, Ryan Manning played well when he was playing for Southampton. 'So it's not the players, Kasey McAteer is playing every minute now. So the quality is there for sure.' Hallgrimsson had previously suggested that defender O'Shea would not be short of options after catching the eye for Ipswich. And he added: 'I think the teams going up will always recruit the most because they will always try to strengthen their squad. Advertisement 'And just looking back to Nottingham Forest when they got promoted, they bought two times, three times a squad. "So it will always be as well that some players will go to clubs and there are better players at that club. 'The general answer would be we like to have players playing at the highest level, but I would rather have players playing than be on the bench at the highest level. That's the diplomatic answer.' FIRE IN THE FRIENDLIES The friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg will be an opportunity to shine for players who have had frustrating campaigns, such as Will Smallbone and Evan Ferguson, or have revitalised themselves with a loan move, as Andrew Omobamidele Advertisement Hallgrimsson said: 'That's one of the reasons why we need to have camps where we can give players a chance to prove a point for us. "Obviously, because of injuries and then not having the playing time, Will hasn't kind of had the chance to show us what he can do. 'So that's why it's good to have a camp like this and give these players, the Andrews, the Wills, the chance to prove a point. 'Evan as well, normally when we have called him in, he has done pretty good for us. So we know the quality is there, but they haven't been given the platform to show it.' Advertisement Ferguson's loan move to West Ham was not successful in the way Omobamidele's has been, with game time no easier to come by for the 20-year-old forward than it had been at Brighton. It begs the question whether he is simply a victim of circumstances or if he was doing something — or not doing something — to contribute to his woes. Hallgrimsson said: 'I can only judge from the time he's with us. He's been good for us, he's been efficient for us. In training, he looks good. 'So, whatever it is, it's something we cannot control and now we haven't seen him for a long time, so we just want to see him, speak to him and just evaluate where he is.' Advertisement JUNE BREAK Given the various trials and tribulations at club level — but most of all because of the long gap since the Championship season ended — Hallgrimsson is relieved Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign is not starting in this window. There would have qualifiers in June had they been drawn in a five-team group instead of one with four. He said: 'It would have been tough having a similar squad to Bulgaria when we played them, to have a lot of players who finished a month ago, keeping them fit for an important game. 'We couldn't have done what we did, given them an extended holiday and off-season so they will be fit in September, so they will be rested when it comes to the new season, these guys we left out now. Advertisement 'And that's because the June window has not been successful for Ireland in the past, it's been a tricky window, not playing for a month and then coming into the national team camp for a game that's maybe on a higher level than you play on a regular basis. "You are never 100 per cent physically fit or mentally focused after a holiday period.' With Szmodics ruled out, Hallgrimsson has called in another player who spent the season in the Championship, Andy Moran, who was on loan to Stoke City from Brighton. One of the others, Robbie Brady, is the only player to have been involved when Ireland last competed at a tournament, at Euro 2016, with Hallgrimsson keen to keep drawing on his experience. Advertisement He added: 'I can only say from my experience, once you have smelled it, you know how big it is and you want to go again and again and again. 'They know that and we need them to spread that around the young players, just how massive it is and how fun it is — these are the moments you remember when you stop playing. 'To share that experience is so important. I have spoken about Robbie, how good he has been since I came in. "In the absence of Séamus Coleman, him and Matt Doherty have needed to step up in the leadership role.' Advertisement

Craig Bellamy pays new Wales call-up the ultimate compliment as transfer bid revealed
Wales boss Craig Bellamy has tipped Cardiff City youngster Ronan Kpakio's for big things after handing the youngster a surprise first senior call-up this summer. The 18-year-old has been included in summer's World Cup qualifying double-header with Liechtenstein and Belgium, despite having played just once for current club Cardiff City. Nevertheless, the teenager is player that's been on the radar for some time, with Bellamy even admitting he pushed a move to sign the right-back during his time at Burnley – the ultimate compliment, in some respects. READ MORE: Manager sorted, structural changes made and weaknesses addressed - Cardiff City's perfect summer READ MORE: Craig Bellamy announces Wales squad for World Cup qualifiers as uncapped Cardiff City teen included "Ronan, I've known him since he was very, very young," Bellamy said. "I've kept an eye on him. Even last year, I tried to buy him for Burnley. So I'm fully aware of him, having been watching him, especially over the last couple of years. "His progression has been outstanding. I think his potential can be ridiculously high."He's very athletic. Very intelligent. If he wasn't injured, I would have had him in March. "So he's a player, especially in the right-back position. We have one or two young ones coming through, but we don't have a big area in there so we really need to start developing players in that position."He's the perfect profile for that." Pressed on how close a move was, and whether an exit from the capital could yet still materialise, Bellamy added: "You might see it this year. I don't think it will just be them [Burnley]. "They [Cardiff] didn't know [back then]. We pulled away." Kpakio was one of several youngsters called up to a training camp earlier this month, with the likes of Luey Giles, Sam Parker, Cian Ashford, Rhys Thomas, Dylan Lawler and Joel Cotterill among those handed a chance to impress, and Bellamy was clearly impressed by much of what he saw. "It's been really great to see," he added. "I picked a lot from the 19s, who are a talented group. That's exactly what they were. "So many positives came out of it, and it's just nice to get them in the way we do things, because it's different to what they were doing before. To watch, day by day, I have to be honest I was so impressed by them. The future of Welsh football as it stands, if they keep developing, should be very exciting." This latest squad also sees the return of senior duo Harry Wilson and Ethan Ampadu, both of whom were injured for the opening games of the campaign back in March. "Harry, if you look at his performances for us in the first si games. His quality, the way he works for the team is incredible. The team does come first for him , which I really buy into and I really appreciate, but if you look at our goals, our assists, the creative bit in the final third, he's really on [those figures]."So we definitely missed that in the last two games. But he's a remarkable player for us and he fits in really well with how we play. "Ethan we haven't had since September. I don't think we have someone at this present moment with his sort of profile. So he has been a loss. But we always adapt. We have to adapt. That's every nation as well."Josh Sheehan has done really well in games where we control games. But games where there's going to be transition, which big games really bring. We need everyone available and having Ethan available is a big, big bonus for us." Bellamy is without Joe Allen following the midfielder's retirement, while captain Aaron Ramsey is ruled out through injury amid ongoing uncertainty over his future both at international and club level. "He's busy with rehab at the moment," Bellamy responded when quizzed on the Cardiff City midfielder. "I spoke to him a couple of days after the last game at Norwich and then I saw him doing rehab. "So we speak but he's going to be a few months away. then we'll see where he's at . The most important thing now is he comes through his rehab and then the decision is his. Whatever he chooses we go with. It's as simple as that." Wales take on Liechtenstein on Friday, June 6 at the Cardiff City Stadium, before then heading to Brussels to take on Belgium three days later.

Huddersfield appoint Ipswich coach Grant as manager
Huddersfield Town have appointed former Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant as their new manager on a three-year deal. The 42-year-old had spent the past three years as a coach at Ipswich Town. It is Grant's first managerial role. He started his playing career with Derby County before spells with the Owls, Burnley and Stoke before finishing his career with Manchester United. Grant takes over a Huddersfield side who finished 10th in League One this season after losing their final six matches under caretaker Jon Worthington. The academy coach was placed in charge of the team after Michael Duff was sacked at the start of March after 10 months. Grant is the club's seventh different managerial appointment since they were beaten by Nottingham Forest in the Championship play-off final in May 2022. "First and foremost, it's an incredible honour to be manager of Huddersfield Town," he told the club website. "This is an exciting time to be joining the club and there is so much potential and opportunity for us going forward, and I couldn't be more motivated to play my part in that journey. "I have a clear idea of what I want my Town team to look like and how I want us to play. My priority is to not only win, but give our amazing supporters a side that they're proud to represent them and excited to watch."
