Burton 'have to be competitive in every game'
Burton Albion head coach Gary Bowyer says his side have to see being competitive in every game as their "realistic target" for the new League One season. The Brewers finished just one point above the relegation zone last season, having been nine points from safety in 23rd position when Bowyer arrived in revival was described as a "miracle" but speaking to Radio Derby, Bowyer says the new campaign is going to be another tough one: "Financially we are probably bottom two but budget doesn't always matter," he said. "It's about what you have in your building and what we have here, in terms of spirit and connections, shows we will have a go at it." Asked whether he had been set a target for the new season, the Manchester-born manager said: "I haven't been given a target yet by the club, maybe that will happen before Saturday."In all honesty though our target is to be competitive in every game. We have to focus on what we can control and that is making sure every game is competitive." Burton didn't register their first league win last season until 9 November and have not won their opening game of a campaign since the 2021-22 season. "The plan is to try and change the narrative around how we start," Bowyer said. "It means a lot to me, our fixtures are very competitive in the first month."The 54-year-old signed a contract extension in June through to 2027 after initially being contracted until 2026. Burton recently saw the departure of striker Romarn Burrell to Queens Park Rangers for a fee that BBC Derby Sport understands to be just over £ is hopeful of getting a replacement in. "I certainly hope we can use some of the money, perhaps not all of it," he added."We knew it was potentially going to happen so we have been looking at options. We lost out on one today. That's something you have to just get used to."Burton get their League One season under way on Saturday, 2 August at home against Mansfield Town.

New striker signing a Plymouth Argyle priority declares Tom Cleverley
FOR AN UPDATED VERSION OF THIS STORY CLICK HERE: Plymouth Argyle face competition from another club for the striker they want to bring to the Home Park to wear the number nine shirt, head coach Tom Cleverley has revealed. It is widely thought that Burton Albion and Jamaica international forward Rumarn Burrell is the player the Pilgrims have identified and while Cleverley has not confirmed that is the case he has admitted to them keeping 'a close eye' on the 24-year-old. The start of the 2025/26 League One campaign is now only a week away and Argyle currently have 22-year-olds Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple as well as first-year professional Joe Hatch as their only out-and-out strikers. READ MORE: Plymouth Argyle struggle against Championship quality of Bristol City READ MORE: Plymouth Argyle summer signing Jack MacKenzie to miss start of season Oseni played the whole of the Pilgrims' 2-0 defeat by Bristol City in their final pre-season game at Home Park today because Pepple had a minor hamstring issue and the decision was taken not to risk his fitness. Asked for an update on the striker that Argyle want to sign, Cleverley said: "Conversations between the two clubs are ongoing and we are hoping." On the importance of getting a deal done, Cleverley added: "It's a priority for sure. It's something we are working hard towards. It's definitely the most important position on the pitch. "Owen and Bim have come in and done fantastic. Bim missing today was more of a precaution. It's a key position in anyone's team and how we want to play. We want our nine to stretch at the right times, to be a focal point at the right times, to be a goal scorer, always on the shoulder. "It's a huge ask for Owen to come in from the level he has been playing at. We saw that as more of a project which is an exciting one, there is lot of potential to work with there, but we all know the number nine shirt is available for a reason and we are looking for the player to fill that." When Cleverley was asked whether the transfer fee for the striker Argyle want to sign was the stumbling block at the moment, he replied: "No, I would say more competition from another club." On whether Argyle had a Plan B as another option if necessary, the Pilgrims' boss added: "The football club is run incredibly well. I would be worried if there wasn't a Plan B. That's all in hand. "I have got a lot of faith in David Fox (Argyle's head of football operations) and Tom Randle (the head of recruitment), and the players they are presenting to me, and having my input in that as well. Yeah, it's in hand." Adding a new striker to wear the number nine shirt before the League One season-opener against Barnsley at Home Park next Saturday would be a big boost for everyone at Argyle. Cleverley said: "It's a heavy shirt. It's a big football club and the number nine is probably the heaviest shirt you can (get). We want to bring some excitement to the players and the fans, and really fill the final piece of the puzzle. "Now, I want to reconfirm that there is no disrespect to who we have got in the building because I think as far as what we brought Bim and Owen in to do they have probably surpassed that in the pre-season. "They are going to give me more headaches. I thought those headaches might come six, 12 months down the line. Bim especially has done fantastically well. Owen struggled in parts today against three physical centre-halves but I thought showed some great quality at times. "Those guys have come in and done well but we know the one we want to bring in will give everyone a lift and a real anticipation for the start of the season." Cleverley indicated the absence of Pepple against Bristol City was not a cause for concern. He said: "A little bit of tightness in a hamstring. We are erring on the side of caution with that one. He has had a good pre-season. He has showed us all what he can do, he has got a good level of fitness." There is also the possibility of a loan signing being brought in by Argyle. Cleverley said: "There is a lot of focus going into the nine position at the minute but potentially, yeah. You will see today we are a little bit on the light side in terms of depth so I'm sure we will add another number certainly to the squad." League One club monitor Northern Ireland striker: ‘We've done very well with young players'
The 21 year-old is currently on the books of Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest, although he is no stranger to the third tier of English football enjoying loan stints at Burton Albion, Wycombe Wanders and most recently Wigan Athletic. Now, Blackpool want to recruit the striker – who has 25 League One goals - on a permanent basis. The Seasiders are also keen to recruit Sheffield Wednesday forward Michael Smith. Blackpool boss Steve Bruce said: 'Both are very good players, and are the sort of calibre that we are looking at. 'It'd be unfair for me to start mentioning names of individuals, but that's the sort of level of player we are looking at to help us for what is going to be a really tough campaign ahead. 'We'd all love someone 20 or 21, everyone enjoys a young one. We've done very well with the young players we have brought forward. 'Let's see what becomes available, we're just getting ready to go to work, and let's see.' The Belfast native has earned nine senior caps for Northern Ireland, making his debut against Lithuania in 2021.
