"Miles to go": Piyush Goyal sees strong potential in India-Italy bilateral trade

Brescia [Italy], June 5 (ANI): Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday pointed out that the bilateral trade between India and Italy is very low, as he suggested that the trade relationship has 'miles to go'. Speaking at the India-Italy Plenary Session of the Business Forum alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Antonio Tajani, Minister Piyush Goyal asked the businesses present at the event whether the current trade volume 'meets even a minuscule portion of the huge potential between Italy and India.' 'We have miles to go,' Piyush Goyal said, painting a hopeful picture that the trade between India and Italy will grow. Piyush Goyal is on a two-day visit to Italy. 'We realise that the bilateral trade between our two nations is so low, and is suboptimal. We have a lot of work to do, whether it is trade, whether it is investments, whether it is technology, whether it is tourism,' Goyal said. The bilateral trade between India and Italy registered at Euro 14.34 billion in 2023. India's exports to Italy reached Euro 9.16 billion, a decrease of 8.86% compared to the previous year, 2022. During 2023, India's imports from Italy were Euro 5.18 billion, an increase of 7.69 per cent compared to the year 2022. The trade balance remains in India's favour, with Euro 3.98 billion. It has been in India's favour since 1988. He added that the tremendous potential between the two countries can be gauged from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's maiden visit to Italy after becoming prime minister. In his address, Minister Goyal said there is a huge opportunity for tourism in India. In the same breath, he invited people of Italy to come to India as tourists. He said Italy is quite a popular destination for Indian tourists, and each time an Indian movie features a song shot in an exotic Italian location, tourism from India to Italy increases significantly. 'I'm a greedy person. I would also like to see tourism come from Italy to India. Therefore, I would like to invite the world of cinema to come to India and explore some exotic locations. We have rain in some parts or other of India every season, 12 months a year. You can have the sun, you can have beautiful beaches, historical sites, palaces, temples, a lot of history, a lot of art, a lot of culture, tonnes of tradition, all of that across India, and I would like to invite all of you to India to explore the majesty and the glory,' he doubled on his tourism promotion. He said the impending India-EU FTA is making rapid progress. 'Our leaders, President Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have tasked us to finalise the deal before the end of this year. I can assure you that we are making rapid progress; we had discussions as recently as two days ago in Paris, where we engaged on finding the pathways for taking forward (the negotiations),' Goyal added. Once finalised, this FTA would be one of the most significant for India, as the EU is its second-largest trading partner after the US. This commitment to finance FTA by the end of 2025 builds on the strategic direction given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, during the landmark visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025. After a nine-year lull, India and the EU re-launched negotiations for the India-EU Free Trade Agreement in 2022. The talks had reportedly stopped in 2013. (ANI)

PITA delegates told to address internet accessibility

Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has urged members of the Pacific Islands Telecommunications Association (PITA) to address the ongoing challenge of internet accessibility across the region. Speaking during the official opening of PITA's 29th Annual General Meeting, Business Forum, and Expo 2025 at the Aquatic Centre, King George Six on Monday evening, PM Manele said internet access remains a pressing issue globally and regionally. 'As we continue to discuss telecommunications and Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), let us be reminded that according to the International Telecommunication Union, under half of the world's population still does not use the internet. This is a challenge not only for governments but also for all stakeholders in the telecommunications and ICT sector to address,' the Prime Minister emphasized. He cited a recent United Nations report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which identifies ICT and digital transformation as critical enablers of inclusive development. 'ICT and digital transformation are beacons of hope for the United Nations principle of 'Leaving No One Behind',' he stated. 'This is particularly urgent for the Pacific Island region, where geographic scatteredness across a vast ocean space makes connectivity vital to development.' PM Manele also praised PITA for exemplifying regional cooperation and collaboration in the communication sector. 'PITA's AGM provides a platform for discussion and partnership among telecommunication entities in the Pacific. This includes government Telecom and ICT policy and regulatory agencies, associate members, and our regional development partners,' he said. More than 280 delegates from over 100 organizations and more than 30 countries have gathered in Honiara for the event, which is being hosted by Solomon Telekom. Themed 'Digital Nations and Smart Blue Continent: Strengthening the Digital Sovereignty, Connectivity and Resilience for the Pacific Future,' this year's gathering underscores the importance of ICT in shaping resilient and connected island nations. Over the next three days, participants will engage in high-level discussions on digital infrastructure, investment gaps, cybersecurity, submarine cables, AI, 5G, cloud computing, trusted networks, and the future of the internet in the Pacific. PITA continues to play a pivotal role as a regional telecommunications association, committed to promoting and advancing communication services across its member and associate member countries.

UAE to invest $40 billion in Italy

The UAE plans to invest $40 billion (AED 146 billion) in Italy, the two countries announced in a joint statement at the conclusion of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit on Monday. More than 40 new agreements were signed in total. Both sides agreed to advance trade relations through conducting a High-Level Business Forum, which served as a platform to deepen economic collaboration and explore new investment opportunities in areas such as sustainable energy, connectivity, defence, water, artificial intelligence, and advanced technology. A key milestone of the visit was the establishment of a strategic partnership on data centers and artificial intelligence under an agreement signed between Italy's ENI and UAE companies MGX and G42. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre and Italy's Italian Space Agency signed agreements to enhance cooperation in lunar and asteroid exploration. The deals surround enhancing cooperation on the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, the Emirates Lunar Mission and Rashid Rover projects. Both nations pledged to share knowledge, expertise, and resources to drive innovation in digital transformation, drone technologies and space, including exploration, remote-sensing technologies and research. The countries also agreed to cooperate on defence through research and development, technical expertise exchange, advancement of the maintenance and modernisation of defense equipment. Military Industry cooperation will focus on joint production, technology transfer, and the development of defense manufacturing facilities. Security Cooperation will encompass counter-terrorism efforts, cybersecurity, information sharing and coordinated responses to natural disaster and humanitarian crises. The UAE and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to joint cybersecurity exercises, building on Italy's engagement in GISEC and CyberQ 2024. The leaders also emphasised the need for closer cooperation on ransomware threats, reaffirming both countries' ongoing collaboration with global partners, including the United States, to strengthen cybersecurity strategies and intelligence-sharing mechanisms. Non-oil trade between the two nations has experienced significant growth over the past decade. In 2023, Italian exports to the UAE reached approximately $7.22 billion (AED 26 billion), surging 22 per cent in early 2024. UAE exports to Italy were valued at $1.57 billion (AED 5.5 billion) in 2023. Over 600 Italian companies operate in the UAE.
