Arsenal transfer target Zubimendi was seen as the new Busquets… Arteta will love him but he WON'T win Gunners games
He is no stranger to a yellow card, but he never oversteps the mark ZU BEAUTY Arsenal transfer target Zubimendi was seen as the new Busquets… Arteta will love him but he WON'T win Gunners games ARSENAL are on the brink of starting their summer splurge with a £50million deal for Martin Zubimendi. But what will the Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder bring to Mikel Arteta's side? Spanish-based journalist Andy West runs the rule over the 26-year-old. Advertisement 5 Martin Zubimendi is set to join Arsenal in a £50m deal Credit: Getty 5 Zubimendi protects the back four and can smoothly link defence and attack Credit: Getty 5 He has been compared to midfield great Sergio Busquets Credit: Getty Dynamic, composed, aggressive... it's long been inevitable Zubimendi's qualities would lead him to Europe's elite. When a young Zubimendi progressed from Real Sociedad's youth ranks to become a first-team regular five years ago, he was quickly touted as a target for Barcelona to replace the fading Sergio Busquets. That never materialised, mainly because of Barca's well-documented financial problems, but the comparison is largely accurate. Zubimendi occupies the same terrain as Busquets at the base of midfield, protecting the back four and smoothly linking defence with attack. Advertisement READ MORE IN FOOTBALL ON THE MEND Arsenal 'agree to sign Zubimendi' but fans have big doubt about Sociedad star He is also press-resistant, capable of receiving and calmly retaining possession in tight spaces. But Zubimendi is physically more explosive than Busquets, able to evade pressure by driving with the ball into space. Zubimendi is an effective and efficient performer rather than flashy — much of his best work unfussily executed off the ball. He reads the game superbly, always popping up in the right place to receive possession from a team-mate or disrupt the opposition's rhythm. That includes game management. Advertisement JOIN SUN VEGAS: GET £50 BONUS 5 A central aspect of Real Sociedad's approach is preventing counter-attacks by physically pressing the first phase of possession, using fouls if necessary. Zubimendi's 47 career yellow cards — but no reds — show he is not averse to controlled aggression. Advertisement These WILD Liverpool stats spell Arsenal disaster | Experts' best bets More tellingly — just 11 goals and eight assists in nearly 250 appearances makes it clear Zubimendi is not a major presence in the opposition final third. That is not his game. Rather than chasing personal glory, Zubimendi makes his team better through positional discipline, distributing simply but quickly, and denying the opposition space. If there is one concern about the long-awaited move to Arsenal, it is whether he can adapt to a new team in a new league. Growing up in San Sebastian and joining his local club aged 12, Real Sociedad is all he has ever known. Advertisement The Basques boast one of football's best youth systems, with a clearly- defined style throughout the age groups allowing local talents to enjoy a seamless transition to senior football. Away from that comfort zone, Zubimendi has rarely been so effective for his country. Since his Spain debut in 2021 he has struggled to become a regular, mostly deputising for Manchester City's Rodri with just one start at last summer's triumphant Euros. Can Zubimendi thrive when he leaves the familiarity of his boyhood club? Advertisement Surely no coach could be better placed to help the transition than Arteta, his fellow San Sebastian native. The Arsenal boss knows exactly what he is getting, with the presence of former team-mate Mikel Merino another help. At 26, Zubimendi is in his prime. The step-up to a major title candidate like Arsenal has been brewing for years. As long he is expected to knit the team together rather than win games single-handedly, everything points towards Zubimendi quickly becoming a key piece for Arteta's Arsenal. Messi, Suarez, Alba sit out Inter Miami vs. Dallas game amid big week
Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Oscar Ustari were not on the Inter Miami game roster for the Sunday match against FC Dallas, and Sergio Busquets is on the bench. The absence of the quartet of veteran starters, and Busquets taking a break, was expected as Miami is coming off a 2-0 loss on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps late Thursday night in the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal. The second and decisive leg of the series looms Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale. Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated on Friday that there would be roster changes for the Dallas game as he and the staff balance league play and the Champions Cup. Messi, Suarez, Alba and Ustari are being rested because of the high-stakes game ahead. The loss to Vancouver left Miami in a precarious position and on the verge of elimination. Champions Cup uses aggregate scoring, and the tiebreaker is away goals, so Inter Miami must score at least two goals and concede none on Wednesday to force extra time for a shot at the championship game. The team was in a similar situation in the quarterfinals against Los Angeles FC and rallied from down 2-0 with a pair of Messi goals to win the series 3-2. This time, a spot in the final is on the line. The winner of the Champions Cup will earn $5 million and qualify for the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and 2029 FIFA Club World Cup. With such a high stakes game on the horizon, and such little time to recover from the Vancouver trip, coach Javier Mascherano said there will be changes in the starting lineup for the Dallas game. He did not rest players between the two legs of the LAFC series, using his regular starters for the league game against Toronto, but this time, it will be different. 'One thing is to play every three days, which the majority of our player are accustomed to, but it's another thing to play less than 72 hours after the previous game,' Mascherano said Saturday morning before training. 'We finished Thursday's game past midnight Miami time, and we are playing Sunday at 5 p.m. It was a flight back of more than six hours.' The Miami starting lineup on Sunday included: Drake Callender (captain), Ian Fray, Gonzalo Lujan, Maxi Falcon, David Martinez, Fafa Picault, Toto Aviles, Yannick Bright, Benja Cremaschi, Leo Afonso and Allen Obando. It is the first MLS start for Obando, the 18-year-old Ecuadorean forward who joined the team last month. On the bench for Miami are Rocco Rios Novo, Ryan Sailor, Marcelo Weigandt, Noah Allen, Fede Redondo, Busquets, Telasco Segovia, Santi Morales and Tadeo Allende. The game kicks off at 5 p.m. and can be watched on Apple TV MLS Season Pass.

Messi, Inter Miami under pressure in must-win Champions Cup game vs. LAFC on Wednesday
Inter Miami is promoting Wednesday night's home game against Los Angeles FC as 'The Comeback Game' and a mighty comeback it will have to be for Lionel Messi and his teammates to advance to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup. Miami was held scoreless in a 1-0 loss in Leg 1 of the quarterfinals at LAFC last Wednesday and now must dig itself out a hole in the two-game series. Complicating matters, this tournament uses aggregate scoring and away goals serves as the tiebreaker, meaning if LAFC scores one goal in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, Inter Miami will need to score at least three to advance (because it scored zero goals on the road). Los Angeles advances with a victory, a tie or even a one-goal loss. If Miami wins 1-0, the teams would be tied 1-1 on aggregate goals at the end of regulation, in which case they would play two 15-minute periods of extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shootout. After going undefeated through its first nine games under new coach Javier Mascherano, including a seven-game win streak, the team hit a speed bump during the past week. Following the loss to LA, a full-strength Miami team settled for a 1-1 home tie against winless Toronto on Sunday. Messi, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets played the full 90-plus minutes and Luis Suarez played 70 minutes, but Miami fell short in a game it was heavily favored to win, adding to the pressure to win Wednesday. 'Rather than talk about pressure, what I would say is that when I was a player, what gave meaning to this profession were games like this one on Wednesday,' Mascherano said. 'For a coach, it's much easier to prepare for a game like this because, yes, we must get the team ready, but there is no need to provide extra motivation. The scenario itself is the biggest motivation.' Miami has never advanced past the quarterfinals of this tournament. 'For us to reach the semifinals for the first time would be a historic moment for this club,' Mascherano added. 'So, more than pressure we feel great hope and desire to play a great game, defensively and offensively. There is no better time to have a perfect performance, and I believe we can.' Defense and goalkeeping will be critical for Inter Miami, and the team will be without Busquets, one of the most respected defensive midfielders of his generation, as he is serving a suspension for accumulation of yellow cards. He acts as an assistant coach on the field and often delivers the pass that leads to scoring opportunities. Yannick Bright, who evolved from an untested rookie out of the University of New Hampshire last season to one of the team's most reliable midfielders, will have to step up, along with Fede Redondo. 'Obviously, Busi is an important player for us, but Yannick is too, as is Fede, and many other players on our team,' Mascherano said. 'We will replace [Busquets] the best way we can so his loss will be felt as little as possible.' Asked what he must do to compensate for Busquets' absence, Bright said: 'We all know he is irreplaceable. So, more than me, it's going to take teamwork from everybody to make us miss him a little less. We're ready. Everybody's up to it.' Mascherano has a difficult choice to make at goalkeeper. Co-captain Drake Callender, the regular starter the past few seasons, was out for an extended period after injuring his right adductor in mid-January while with the U.S. national team in a camp. He got his first start of the season against Toronto and said he is fully fit. Oscar Ustari played well in Callender's absence and Mascherano said that LAFC's lone goal was not Ustari's fault. The coach explained that Ustari was chosen to start that high-stakes game because Callender had not played in five months. 'Drake's last game was against Atlanta, in November, so we were worried about this because if you put him in and he has not played for a long time, it is difficult, and more for a goalkeeper,' Mascherano said. 'So, we played Drake against Toronto. Oscar is doing very well for us. We have three really good goalkeepers, all very professional, they work well between them and this is really important.' As always, there are high expectations for Messi to carry Miami's attack. After sitting out the March international break due to an adductor injury, the Argentine captain has played 180-plus minutes over Inter Miami's last two matches. He has six goals in eight games across league games and Champions Cup this season. 'These types of games are the ones that motivate players like [Messi] the most,' Mascherano said. As for LAFC, which made the Champions Cup finals in 2020 and 2023, the team is in ninth place in the Western Conference standings and coming off a 1-0 loss on the road against Houston. Unlike Mascherano, who started his star players in the weekend league match, Los Angeles coach Steve Cherundolo chose to rest eight starters that faced Miami against Houston. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, forward Denis Bouanga, and center back Eddie Segura were the only three LAFC players who went the full game against Miami and Houston. LAFC comes into Wednesday's game in Fort Lauderdale with an extra day of rest, as it played Saturday and Miami played Sunday. Mascherano voiced his displeasure about that discrepancy. L.A. was able to shut out Miami in Leg 1 of the series by clogging the middle and preventing Messi and Suarez from receiving the ball. 'Obviously, they have a lethal attack with Messi, [Luis] Suarez, and [Sergio] Busquets in there dictating play,' said LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead. 'They're as good as it gets in this league. We tried to frustrate them by clogging spaces in the middle. We limited their chances. We have to do that again next week in Miami.' The winner of this series advances to face either Vancouver Whitecaps or Mexican club Pumas in the semifinals. Those teams tied 1-1 in their first leg last week and play Leg 2 Wednesday night in Mexico City. ▪ How to Watch: Inter Miami vs. LAFC kicks off at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale. Tickets are on sale through TicketMaster and fans can watch the broadcast on FS1 in English and TUDN in Spanish.
