Playing alongside Shelvin Mack gives 2 former Butler players glimpse of pro futures before TBT
INDIANAPOLIS — What's the best way for former Butler basketball players to prepare for a chance to win $1 million? Play against the 2025-26 Butler Bulldogs. That was the scene Thursday as Butler stars past and present competed in a full-court scrimmage at Hinkle Fieldhouse in preparation for Saturday's opening round of The Basketball Tournament (TBT). TBT is a 64-team tournament split across eight regions. The winning team wins $1 million. The former Butler players will play for All Good Dawgs, led by former NBA players Shelvin Mack and Sean McDermott. All Good Dawgs are seeded third in the Hinkle-hosted Indianapolis regional and will face off against sixth seed Shield 219, a team of Valparaiso players at 2 p.m. TBT: Butler basketball alumni team All Good Dawgs will play at Hinkle Fieldhouse Happy Valley Hoopers (former Penn State players), Boeheim's Army (Syracuse alumni), reigning champion Carmen's Crew (Ohio State alumni) and Elite Nation are the No. 1 seeds in the tournament. "It's a great feeling," Mack said of being back at Hinkle. "I came here a lot as a commentator, but it's a little different getting out there on the court and competing with the guys, having that chemistry and playing The Butler Way, playing a Butler brand of basketball. "It's family. ... A lot of guys play overseas and don't get to come back to games throughout the year, so it's good to come back and have that chemistry and touch base with your family members." Mack and McDermott will be joined by former Bulldogs Andre Screen, Avery Woodson, Bo Hodges, Jalen Thomas, Myles Tate, Ty Groce and Tyler Wideman. Extra players James Justice Jr. (Martin Methodist, Tennessee-Southern) and Martyce Kimbrough (Findlay) are also on the team. Mack served as the general manager in charge of putting the team together. Of the players on the team, only Tate and Screen have not played professionally. Screen has been working out in Indy during the offseason. At 7 foot 1, playing in TBT is a great chance to show off his skill. "I'm still learning (my teammates), but you can tell they're all experienced pros," Screen said. "That's something new for me. Just getting used to that play style and how I can make an impact on the game. It's been a good experience so far." Insider: Butler basketball freshman was 'putting on a show' before he got to campus, shows glimpse of what's next Tate is also hoping to show what he can do on TBT's stage. The 6-0 guard transferred to Appalachian State in 2023 after three seasons at Butler. Tate earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors last season, averaging 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. "I came back last night, came in the gym and I just remember all of the memories of playing here,' Tate said. 'It's a good feeling with everybody welcoming me back. "I'm just trying to show that I'm a dog and I've always been that. It started in this building right here. Butler gave me a chance, and I'm just trying to put on for Indianapolis, put on for Spartanburg, South Carolina and my family." Playing against the Bulldogs was a challenge for All Good Dawgs. Thad Matta's crew looks to be in mid-season form and that's an encouraging sight for the former Bulldogs.

Caitlin Clark's Boyfriend Got More Popular on Tuesday
Caitlin Clark's Boyfriend Got More Popular on Tuesday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Caitlin Clark's boyfriend, Butler assistant men's basketball coach Connor McCaffery, might have become the most popular man in the Bulldogs program on Tuesday. Advertisement The credit goes to the Indiana Fever star, whom he started dating in 2023 when the two both played college basketball at the University of Iowa. A certified Hawkeyes legend, the 26-year-old McCaffery is entering his second season as an assistant coach at Butler under head coach Thad Matta. Last season, Connor helped coach his brother, Patrick McCaffery, a graduate transfer from Iowa to Butler who recently signed with the Sacramento Kings. This year, their youngest brother, Jack McCaffery, will be a freshman for the Bulldogs. When he helped hand out a supply of Clark's signature Nike shoes to the team on Tuesday, he proved how dating the WNBA superstar has its perks. It follows Indiana's color scheme, but did not look out of place with blue Butler gear. On June 30, Nike's limited release on the SNKRS app sold out in minutes. Clark gifted the exclusive shoes to her entire Fever coaching staff before they won the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final against the Minnesota Lynx. Travis Kelce's friend even got a pair. The Bulldogs were just the latest to benefit, thanks to the McCaffery connection. While McCaffery received a few thanks, in the video above he could be seen remaining supportive and making sure Clark got the credit for the generous gesture. She is expected to return from five games out with a groin injury for Wednesday's game between the Fever and the Golden State Valkyries. Caitlin Clark's Boyfriend Faces Backlash for Message Posted on Saturday
Caitlin Clark's Boyfriend Faces Backlash for Message Posted on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark made her triumphant return against the New York Liberty on June 14 after missing five games due to a left quadriceps strain. Advertisement Clark, who hasn't missed a game since high school, looked at the situation as glass half-full, noting how she gained a "unique perspective" during her time on the sidelines. "When you're out there playing and in the heat of the moment you don't always realize everything, you don't always see everything," she said. The 23-year-old guard dominated in her first game back on Saturday, even with limited minutes. In the first half alone, she drilled six threes, scoring 25 points in 15 minutes of action. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22). Grace Smith/IndyStar-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images While Clark and the Fever look to ruin the Liberty's perfect season, New York entered the matchup with a 9-0 record, Clark's boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, turned heads with a message he sent on X that morning. Advertisement McCaffery posted, ""Idk why people still yell 'Go Hawks' when they see me like…No? Go dawgs, Go Quakers, Go Fever." McCaffery, an assistant coach for the Butler Bulldogs, spent six years on the Hawkeyes men's basketball team coached by his father, Fran McCaffery. However, the school fired his dad in March. Fran McCaffery's alma mater, The University of Pennsylvania, hired him to be head coach of the Quakers later than month. Fans didn't appreciate McCaffery's comment. They still hold his father in high regard as the longest-turned head coach in Hawkeyes history (15 years). Also, Clark became the NCAA's all-time scorer during her four-year tenure at Iowa. One fan posted, "Connor McCaffery is an idiot lol,"before adding, "Also, your girlfriend is the most popular Hawkeye athlete of all time. [expletive]. Another fan wrote, "Only Connor McCaffery would play 6 years in Iowa City, be loved by most fans, and get this butthurt over people saying 'Go Hawks.'' Advertisement One woman added, "Take a lesson from Tom Davis, Connor! Move on with grace and humility. We understand the hard feelings. But also don't forget the many wonderful opportunities this University gave you & you family. Most Iowa fans respect & love the McCaffery's. Time to grow up!" One X user wrote, "Connor McCaffery. The guy whined about all the fans that didn't fill the arena and support the team and now apparently whines about those that did support the team, extending to him. I got roasted for calling him a spoiled rich kid one time. Tisk, tisk." McCaffery has since deleted his post.
