Global brands gearing up for 2025 China International Import Expo

As the eighth China International Import Expo approaches, both veteran participants and newcomers are preparing for the event in Shanghai from 5 to 10 November, and are expressing strong confidence in the platform's value for accessing the Chinese market and fostering international trade cooperation. The CIIE, China's premier import-themed trade fair, continues to attract global brands seeking to expand their presence in the world's second-largest economy. Companies across sectors view the expo as a vital platform for product launches and partnership development in China. CASETiFY, a global lifestyle brand specialising in customised tech accessories, will make its CIIE debut this year following substantial growth in the Chinese market. Vincent Au, general manager of CASETiFY Greater China, sees the expo as a strategic opportunity to strengthen connections with young Chinese consumers and local potential partners. 'The CIIE offers an ideal platform to amplify our brand presence among young Chinese consumers,' Au said. The company plans to showcase its latest product, including iPhone accessories and suitcases, while offering interactive customisation experiences for visitors. Goodfarmer Fresh Fruit Trading Corp, a fresh food retailer and CIIE veteran since 2018, exemplifies CIIE's impact on business growth. 'After introducing New Zealand's super-sized avocados at the fourth CIIE, we saw a 150 per cent growth the following year. Our 'black diamond' pineapples, launched at the fifth CIIE, achieved a 25-fold increase in weekly shipments,' said Zhang Jingzhen, general manager of the company's fruit brand division. Zhang credited CIIE for facilitating connections with nationwide buyers and distribution networks, noting that the platform has been vital for the company in establishing business relationships across China. The company plans to introduce several new products, including pineapples from Costa Rica and organic blueberries from Peru. Coating manufacturer Nippon Paint's 2024 CIIE debut yielded 16 partnership agreements with State-owned enterprises and industry partners. Wu Yalin, branding centre vice-president at Nippon Paint China, confirmed that these partnerships generated substantial business opportunities. This year, the company will showcase innovations across low-altitude aviation infrastructure, AI manufacturing solutions, residential construction materials, battery safety of new energy vehicles and sustainable development products. 'Our CIIE experience has strengthened our belief that investing in China means investing in the future. As we transition from CIIE newcomers to veterans, we aim to be not just participants and beneficiaries, but contributors,' Wu said. Bayer's seven-year CIIE participation has resulted in nearly 40 major cooperation agreements and the successful localisation of several products. The pharmaceutical firm has introduced over 100 innovative products and presented more than 50 'first releases' at previous expos. Zhang Lei, vice-president of communications for Bayer Group Greater China and North East Asia, said that the company will showcase healthcare and agricultural innovations across two exhibition venues covering 8,600 square feet this year, leveraging CIIE's 'spillover effect' to expand network in China. Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony is doubling its exhibition space to 3,230 square feet. Following previous success, Sony plans to showcase integrated solutions across software, hardware and gaming sectors, creating immersive experiences for visitors. 'CIIE can help foreign companies gain a deeper understanding of China's market as well as Shanghai's business environment,' said Li Yang, director of the external affairs department at Sony (China) Co Ltd.

CIIE promotion event aims to boost China-Czech business ties

PRAGUE, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- An event promoting the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in the Czech Republic was held here on Tuesday, bringing together representatives from the Czech government, the business community, industry associations, and Chinese enterprises to explore new opportunities for boosting China-Czech economic and trade cooperation. Speaking at the event, Liu Haiyan, economic and commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic, said the CIIE serves as an important platform for China to further open up to the world and offers a golden opportunity for enterprises around the globe to access the Chinese market. Through the CIIE, Czech companies can showcase their high-quality products and further enhance their brand recognition and market share, he said, adding that he hopes Czech entrepreneurs will take this year's CIIE as an opportunity to further explore the Chinese market. During the event, a representative from the CIIE Bureau gave a virtual presentation on the upcoming eighth CIIE, which will take place in Shanghai from Nov. 5 to 10. Richard Hlavaty, director of the Department of Non-European Countries at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said at the event that the Czech Republic considers the CIIE as a key opportunity to present the country, its innovation and industrial tradition, but also as a strategic channel for deepening economic and trade relations with China. "I firmly believe that through initiatives like this, we can continue to expand our economic ties and deepen mutual understanding between our countries," he said. Frantisek Chaloupecky, vice president of the Confederation of Industry of the Czech Republic, one of the co-organizers of the event, said that the CIIE provides an important platform for Czech companies, enabling them not only to showcase their products but also to establish business connections in the Chinese market. According to the organizers, 17 Czech exhibitors participated in last year's CIIE, primarily showcasing products in the food and beverage industries as well as the handicraft sector.

China's imports of fruits to grow with big appetite for durians, coconuts

Growers of durian and coconut in Southeast Asia are expecting a hectic time ahead as they grapple with rising demand from mainland Chinese buyers who prefer high-quality fresh fruits against the backdrop of a weak consumption market. Malaysian fresh durians, which have witnessed an export boom since last year, are still in high demand ahead of the peak season in August, according to Guo Min, deputy marketing director with distributor Joy Wing Mau's China operations. "The growth trajectory remains robust and we foresee surging demand [for the fruit] next month," he said in an interview, adding that Malaysian durians were the most sought-after by consumers among imported fruits. "We have got the logistics and warehousing arrangements ready to better serve the market." Malaysia started exporting fresh durians to China last year, shipping 24.8 million ringgit (190 million baht) worth of them between August and December, according to data from Malaysia's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. In the first four months this year, Malaysia's share of the durian market in China had grown tenfold, Guo added. Thailand held a 57% share of China's US$6.99 billion (226 billion baht) durian market in 2024, Chinese customs data showed. Guo spoke on the sidelines of a "matchmaking meeting" between international suppliers and Chinese traders in Shanghai on Friday, organised by the China International Import Expo (CIIE) Bureau, a unit of the Ministry of Commerce, ahead of the annual trade show later this year. Chinese consumers' rising awareness of health and food security remained the key growth drivers for imported fruits, according to Allen Zeng, deputy director of brand with Goodfarmer Fresh Fruit Trading, which deals with fruit exports from the Philippines and Vietnam to China. "They underscore the importance of freshness and they believe in big brands that can guarantee quality and security of the products," he said at the CIIE-arranged event. "Exports of fruits including durians and pineapples turned out to be resilient even though local consumers are cautious on spending." Many traders at the CIIE event said they would also introduce higher-quality coconuts and cherries to the Chinese market at the CIIE, the world's largest trade show featuring imports, which will be held from Nov 5 to 10 in Shanghai. The Chinese economy has been under deflationary pressure over the past two years due to sluggish domestic demand and excess production capacity. Inflation quickened at an annualised pace of 0.1% in June, ending five months of weaker prices, government reports showed. The CIIE, an annual event launched in 2018, is considered by many foreign businesses a prime marketing opportunity. Beijing encourages local firms to buy foreign-made goods as a way of showing China's commitment to free trade and expanding access to its market. In 2024, companies racked up US$80 billion worth of deals during the six-day show, a 2% increase from a year earlier. Deals involving food and agricultural products provided a bright spot, reflecting growing awareness of food security and nutrition in China, analysts said. To date, the CIIE Bureau said exhibitors had booked 300,000 square metres of space to display their products and technologies at the six-day event. Last year, more than 3,500 international companies took part in the show.
