Typewriting institute owners in Vellore oppose GO to conduct exams on computers from 2027
VELLORE: Opposing a government circular that mandates typewriting exams be conducted only on computers from 2027, as many as 25 owners of typewriting institutes in Vellore submitted a petition to district collector VR Subbulaxmi on Monday. Stating that typewriting exams have been held on typewriting machines since decades, the petitioners said the move will affect the livelihood of around 10,000 typewriter mechanics and their families. There are around 4,500 typewriting centres in Tamil Nadu, employing nearly 4.5 lakh teachers. These centres would lose business if the rule is implemented, they added. As per GO 187 dated October 28, 2024, the typewriting exam and the certificate course in Computer on Office Automation (COA) will be merged into a single course, which will become a prerequisite for recruitment into Tamil Nadu State and Subordinate Services. If the order is implemented, typewriting centres will become redundant, as students will shift to computer training centres instead, said Mohan A, one of the petitioners. 'This will also affect typing speed, as students develop the ability to type with all eight fingers only when they learn on typewriters. Those learning on computers often type slowly using just two fingers,' he added. Further, raising concerns about affordability, Mohan said, 'We charge Rs 400 at typewriting centres, whereas computer centres charge around Rs 3,000 per month. Many students cannot afford that."

Commerce institutes oppose computerisation of typewriting examinations
The Tamil Nadu Commerce Institutes Association (TNCIA) has opposed the government decision to combine typewriting examination with the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation (COA). In a petition submitted to the district administration here on Monday, the association said that the decision would affect around 5,000 typewriting institutes in the State. The decision to conduct the typewriting examination on using computers from 2027 would affect the livelihoods of a large number of teachers and mechanics employed in these institutions. The association demanded that the typewriting examinations were held on typewriters. 'Conducting the typewriting examination on computers would make typewriting obsolete. The computer keyboard layout for Tamil is different from the one used in typewriters. This would affect the livelihood of teachers working in typewriting institutes,' said J. Ravichandran, Liaison Officer, TNCIA.

RM1.63mil worth of drones declared as kitchen towels seized
PETALING JAYA: A shipment of kitchen towels that arrived at North Port, Port Klang last month turned out to be 20 drones intended for agricultural use. The drones, estimated to be worth RM1.63 million in total, were shipped from a neighbouring country. Customs Department Assistant Director General Raizam Setapa @ Mustapha said the container was detected around 5.15pm on April 23. "Our personnel conducted a scan of the shipping container with representatives from the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) and found 20 drones instead of kitchen towels inside. "I would like to stress that the importation of electronic goods such as drones requires a Certificate of Approval (COA) from Sirim before the items can be brought into Malaysia," she told reporters today.
