Nine ways to wear denim beyond the basic blue jeans
We're weak for denim. Could you blame us? From dismantling dress codes to creating a democracy of comfort - sure, that's just an average Tuesday. The beauty of denim? Once you've found your 'you' piece, chances are you won't stop wearing it. And if you're still looking for the one? We've found the keepers that'll make you call off the search. Take women-led East London brand Aligne's 'Sasha' denim jacket. It's the kind of piece that demands to be thrown over everything from silky slip dresses to your oldest track pants. As for their 'Elle' Bardot blazer: consider this your summer rendering of a classic—perfect with off-the-shoulder styles or worn as a top with ecru jeans. Speaking of double denim, look to COS for an elevated reimagining of the trend. No noughties throwbacks. Think wide-leg drawstring trousers and a matching sleeveless top—the architectural foil for misplaced nostalgia or seasonal whimsy. If you prefer to test your layering skills, Arket's denim vest is the unexpected twist you didn't know your wardrobe needed. Dare to wear over bare skin and high-waisted jeans or in the cooler months with a tissue-thin polo neck and flared corduroy trousers. Looking to elevate your look? Massimo Dutti got the memo. From their box-pleated denim midi skirt with unfinished edges to a textured short jacket that gives top notes of Chanel-inspired bouclé tweed, prepare to be that girl. For a true main-character moment, though, nothing says Emily in Paris quite like Self-Portrait's denim bandeau midi dress. Combine sharp silhouettes with off duty ease for best results. Woman saves husband's life with bear spray during grizzly attack in wilderness
A husband and wife's leisurely bike ride along a Canadian trail took a terrifying turn over the weekend when they spooked two grizzly bears, causing them to attack. Local authorities said quick thinking by the woman likely saved both their lives as she used bear spray to drive the animals away. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, while the couple was riding e-bikes near the Kootenay River. According to the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (COS), the bears attacked after being surprised. The woman told authorities she heard her husband yell before seeing a bear charge toward her. As she reached for her bear spray, she noticed another grizzly attacking her husband. She deployed the spray again, successfully driving both bears away. Officials said the man suffered serious injuries and was transported by emergency responders to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. He is expected to recover. "The couple was well-prepared," said COS Inspector Dave Webster in a Facebook post. "They had bear spray, kept it accessible, and knew how to use it. Their actions were commendable, and we urge anyone in bear country to take similar precautions." Following the attack, officers interviewed the victims, inspected the scene and consulted a carnivore expert, who concluded that the bears were likely acting defensively. In a statement released two days after the encounter, the COS confirmed that the bears' behavior appeared to be a defensive response and that the couple had likely caught the animals off guard in a dense section of the trail. There were no indications that the bears had been tracking or hunting the pair, and no recent signs of bear aggression had been reported in the area. Officers searched the area that day but found no sign of the bears. Authorities closed three main trails and set traps, though no animals were captured. A follow-up search the next day also resulted in no sightings. Because the bears appeared to be acting in self-defense, wildlife officials decided not to pursue or relocate them. Officials emphasized that bear spray is a proven, effective deterrent against bear attacks. "Like a seat belt, it should be considered essential safety equipment when traveling in wildlife country," the organization shared in a resource guide on their website. Woman uses bear spray to save husband from grizzly attack in Canada
The Conservation Officer Service said the bears' reaction "was defensive in nature," and the couple likely surprised the two bears at the corner of the trail. A married couple that was e-biking along a Canadian trail startled two bears that attacked them over the weekend, requiring one person to undergo surgery, according to local officials. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, July 26, as the husband and wife were e-biking along the Kootenay River when two grizzly bears attacked them, according to information shared by the Conservation Officer Service (COS) in British Columbia. Officers interviewed the couple, assessed the area and spoke to a carnivore specialist, who stated the bears likely acted in self-defense. Two days after the ordeal, the Conservation Officer Service said the bears' reaction "was defensive in nature," and the couple likely surprised the animals at the corner of the trail, which has thick brush around it. The service found no evidence that the bears were stalking or hunting the couple, and there have been no recent reports of bear activity or aggressive bear behavior in the area before the attack. "These people were well-prepared," COS Insp. Dave Webster said in a Facebook post. "They had bear spray, had it readily accessible, and knew how to use it. We'd like to recognize these actions and encourage anyone hiking, biking or recreating in bear country to take similar precautions." What happened that day? The woman told officials she heard her husband scream, then she saw a grizzly bear running toward her. As she grabbed her bear spray, she noticed a second bear attacking her husband. "She again used bear spray and both bears ran off," Webster wrote, noting that the husband suffered "significant injuries." He is expected to recover, the service later said. The couple called for help, and once emergency services arrived, the husband was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. That day, officers swept the area but found no bears, and three major trails in the area were closed off with signs added. Officials also set traps, although no bears were captured. The following day, officers searched the area and found no bears. Trails remained closed, they said. Due to the bears acting in self-defense, the service will not capture the animals. The trails were closed as of July 28. USA TODAY contacted officials on Wednesday, July 30, about the reopening of the trails, but did not receive an immeidate response. What to do if you encounter a bear It's possible to run into bears along busy trails close to town or in the remote backcountry, according to Parks Canada. Parks Canada said situations in which bears stalk or hunt humans along a trail are rare. While bears try to avoid people, interactions do occur. This Almost-Barefoot Style Is The Year's Hottest Trend
The quarterly Lyst index is here once again, and it's packed with fashion insights, including its list of the 20 buzziest brands of the moment. Starting off strong, Miu Miu regained its number-one slot, which it forfeited to Loewe last quarter following a surge in interest due to Jonathan Anderson's departure. Prada, Saint Laurent, and Coach also sat comfortably in the top five, with COS hovering at number seven as the only high-street brand in the ranking—directly behind The Row, at six. The most prominent trend right now? Anything to do with, well, feet. People can't stop talking about where to find this season's hottest, freakiest footwear, how to still stand out while wearing closed-toe shoes in the summer heat, and whether toe rings are really making a comeback. Fashion trends come and go, often in the form of It bags and soon-to-be-forgotten silhouettes (the peplum revival is still waiting patiently in the wings; see: Phoebe Philo's Sugar tops). However, it's rare to see a single body part hold such autonomous power in the sartorial conversation. Out of the top ten hottest items of recent months, six are footwear, including the Vibram Fivefinger shoes (a distant cousin of the Nike Air Rift), Ancient Greek Sandals, Iro ballet flats, and The Row's pricey Dune flip-flops, which surged in popularity after Jonathan Bailey conspicuously sported a pair on a red carpet in London. The closer your foot is to the ground, the better, and extra points for flashing your toes. There's something so nonchalant about balancing an outfit with the an unexpectedly informal shoe—it also signals that you can piece together a look from top to toe. Interestingly, Katie Lubin, VP of brand and communications at Lyst, believes that The Row's hype has never been more widespread, and points to the footwear trend as proof. 'They've hit the sweet spot where minimalist aesthetic meets maximum cultural cachet, creating products that function as both wardrobe staples and status symbols,' she tells ELLE. Across the board, searches for flip-flops are up 68%, with customers unsurprisingly favoring COS, Havaianas, and Tory Burch as less expensive alternatives. (Not on the charts, but a popular honorable mention also goes to Tory Burch's wide range of 'pierced' silhouettes, which have taken over fashion girls' feet with full force, offering a bolder statement in the low-key footwear field.) Also on the 'Hottest Products' list were the Isabel Marant wedge sneakers and Miu Miu's suede logo-embossed boat shoes—two styles that have enjoyed relative longevity in internet years since they began cropping back up in early 2024. If anything, their resurgence, alongside the rise in ballet sneakers (like the Puma Speedcat flats) was a precursor to the footwear-focused trend that was to come. In other news, athletic dressing continued to reign supreme, with Adidas track shorts coming in at number three, no doubt thanks to celebrities like Paul Mescal and Zoë Kravitz, who recently elevated the sporty staple with heeled mules and a Saint Laurent bag. According to Lubin, Burberry also enjoyed a bump on the menswear side, specifically when it came to shirting and swim shorts. Earlier this year, the British brand once again returned to its roots for a festival-inspired campaign starring Cara Delevingne and the Gallagher family—proof that celebrity-endorsed, brand-driven nostalgia can still be enticing in today's fashion sphere.

I'm Not Buying Any Other Skirts This Summer - Except This Timeless Uniqlo Style
As much as I've waxed lyrical this summer about the trending A-line white skirt, I'll be the first to admit that the trend probably has about as much staying power as the denim skirt trend did only a couple of years ago. So, it won't come as anything revolutionary, but I'm focusing on investing in timeless staples, in an effort to not only cut down my spending, but also the Vinted pile I have sitting in my bedroom. When it comes to skirts, there might be plenty of timeless styles that come to mind; a classic black mini, a pleated midi or a wrap skirt - but there's only one skirt that's timeless and will keep you cool. A linen skirt comes with such ease that no other skirt can possibly compare. Throw it on over the top of a bikini for a morning swim at the beach, button up a linen shirt over the top for lunch, or dress up for dinner; there's pretty much no occasion, at least in the summer months, that a linen skirt doesn't work for. And, the most affordable and quintessentially European-on-holiday linen skirt I've found comes from Uniqlo. Its Linen Blend Skirt has a simple silhouette and features plenty of easy-going details, like a comfortable elasticated waist and slight flare at the hem. Uniqlo, Linen Blend Skirt - Beige Uniqlo's skirt is made from a linen-blend fabric, which means it drapes nicely and doesn't have an irritating heavyweight to it. A simple silhouette, but one that can be dressed up or down nonetheless, the Linen Blend Skirt also has an elasticated waist and maxi length. Styling a linen skirt, when it's as good as Uniqlo's, is super easy. If in any doubt, the hack to wearing linen is pairing it with something equally as breezy. Team a linen skirt with a ruffled or boho-esque blouse and finish with platform sandals or even toe-ring sandals for a throw-on-and-go everyday outfit (it's also office-appropriate, too). Another way to style a linen skirt that's fit for meandering round cafes, markets and vintage stores is to wear it with a basic tank top (I head to H&M for mine), white socks and chunky black loafers. For an evening affair, pair the skirt with a waistcoat top and add a pair of kitten heels to polish the look. ©Instagram/@iamcharlotteolivia Uniqlo, Linen Blend Skirt - Green If you prefer to lean into brighter colours in the summer, Uniqlo's classic Linen Blend Skirt also comes in a chartreuse colourway. Style with other equally bright colours and a few chunky bangles. There you have it, proof that not all linen skirts are created equal. While the fabric has long been (somewhat unfairly) cast as crinkly and high-maintenance, Uniqlo's Linen Blend Skirt, with its breezy shape and elasticated waist, changes that. Suddenly, ironing doesn't seem like such a chore - or maybe, with a skirt this good, you won't mind a few creases anyway. COS, Linen-Blend Midi Column Skirt COS also offers a great linen skirt, made from a similar linen-blend material. A style that's fit for the warmer weather, its black colour makes it extremely versatile, whether you're pairing it with a baby tee and ballet flats, or with a blouse and loafers. Aligne, Mia Linen Maxi Skirt Aligne's take on a linen skirt is, as you'd expect from the brand, tailored yet floaty. It features a back slit and zip, as well as dart detailing at the waistband. Plus, it's available in two easy-to-style colours - white and black. Massimo Dutti, Flounce Linen Blend Midi Skirt If you prefer your linen skirt to have a bit more shape to it, Massimo Dutti's iteration is the one for you. Finished with a zip fastening at the back, the skirt is perfect for pairing with sheer vest tops and platform sandals.
