City spends Saturday stuck on roads
Chennai: Traffic crawled on several stretches in Chennai, including Anna Salai and Kamarajar Salai, on Saturday as multiple infrastructure projects, rain-preparedness work, visitors thronging new amenities at proposed Blue Flag beach on Marina, and a brief VVIP movement combined to choke key arterial roads. Traffic police warned public to brace for more snarls in the coming days. Slowdowns were reported from mid-morning across different parts of the city. "It took me 25 minutes to drive from Kamarajar Arangam to the U-turn near Arivalayam. Barricades were placed along the median and no one knew what was happening. This was unprecedented, especially on a Saturday afternoon," said S Kumaresan, an advocate from Maduravoyal who was heading to office. Police attributed the congestion to metro rail work on Venkatanarayana Road and Nungambakkam High Road, flyover construction on South Usman Road, and stormwater drain repair on Anna Salai. "We followed security protocol for the governor, and traffic was blocked for 15 minutes," police said. The spillover was felt in T Nagar's inner roads as well. "Haphazardly parked vehicles and roadside eateries added to the woes. There were no policemen in the vicinity," said D Mahadevan, who works in T Nagar. On Kamarajar Salai, the rush was due to the new beach amenities. Raksha bandhan celebrations and shopping also added to the congestion. Road users on Anna Salai are expected to face increased congestion with the commencement of flyover construction between Teynampet and Saidapet, where work is now underway near Eldams Road and SIET College. Teynampet traffic enforcement wing assistant commissioner Raja said alternative routes are being planned. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). "In The Long Run, We Are Harming Maharashtra": Governor On Language Row
Mumbai (Maharashtra): Amid the ongoing row over language in Maharashtra, Governor CP Radhakrishnan has urged people to refrain from spreading hatred based on linguistic differences, warning that such attitudes could harm the state in the long run. Sharing a personal experience from his time as an MP in Tamil Nadu, the Maharashtra Governor said, "...one day I saw some people beating someone. When I asked them about the problem, they were speaking in Hindi. Then, the hotel owner told me that they don't speak Tamil, and people were beating them to speak Tamil." He added, "If we spread this kind of hatred, then who will come and invest...? In the long run, we are only harming Maharashtra. I'm unable to understand Hindi, and that is an obstacle for me. We must learn the maximum number of languages, and we should be proud of our mother tongue." Maharashtra Minister Girish Mahajan also weighed in on the issue, saying, "Definitely, Marathi is our mother tongue, and it is our priority, but if we force someone else to speak Marathi or beat them, that is also not right for our state. We also go out, and what will we do if someone tells us to speak in Tamil or Bengali... We live in a country where many languages are spoken. We love our own languages, but I also do not like this kind of attitude." These remarks come amid heated debates in Maharashtra and Karnataka over the alleged "imposition" of Hindi and the choice of medium of instruction in schools. The controversy in Maharashtra began with a government resolution issued on April 16, mandating the introduction of Hindi as a third language from Classes 1 to 5. The move drew sharp criticism, with many accusing the state government of attempting to impose Hindi. Earlier on Saturday, NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule took a jibe at Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning who might be pressuring him to prioritise Hindi over Marathi. "I am very concerned about Devendra (Fadnavis) Ji. Who is pressuring him?... Under whose pressure is he doing this? This is the first time that Maharashtra's Chief Minister is placing Hindi above Marathi..." Sule told reporters

‘Bid to centralise power': MVA urges Governor to return Public Security Bill to govt for reconsideration
A delegation of opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Friday held a meeting with Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan requesting him to return the Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill to the state government for reconsideration. The opposition also submitted a letter to the Governor claiming that the Bill is an attempt to centralise power. 'Out of 12,500 objections raised against the Bill from citizens and organisations, around 9,500 were demanding to cancel the Bill. The state government should have gone for public hearing by considering the opposition,' said the letter. It mentioned that the opposition had submitted a dissent note on the Bill by detailing its adverse impact on the citizens and various lacunae in it. 'It is requested that considering the people's outrage against the Bill, it should be returned to the state government for reconsideration,' said the opposition. Last week, both Houses of the legislature passed the Bill after being cleared by the joint selection committee. While in Assembly, the opposition failed to register a strong opposition, it walked out of the legislative council after facing criticism from all quarters for failing to oppose the Bill strongly. The Congress central leadership too sought reply from the Maharashtra Legislative party as to how did it allow passing of Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill without opposition. On Thursday, party legislators huddled in a meeting chaired by Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal. In the meeting, Congress MLAs were asked to be at forefront of every protest against government. The Congress has also directed all its district committees to organise protests by burning copies of the bill. The opposition has maintained that the Bill, which Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has claimed to target left extremist forces and Naxalites, will be used against those who take anti-government stand and protest against its policies. Fadnavis has assured that it won't be misused.

Opening defence sector to desi pvt players robust decision making: Guv
1 2 Nagpur: Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Saturday backed the opening up of India's defence sector to indigenous private players as robust decision-making and termed its criticism regressive. "Bofors guns were imported, and now Rafales were bought. Does it not allow the rest of the world to know about India's defence secrets when weapons are imported," asked Radhakrishnan. He was addressing the first batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Management holders (PGDM) passing out of National Academy of Defence Production (NADP) here. The governor expressed hope that in the changing scenario where the private sector was getting a push, Maharashtra would have defence corridors in line with those in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. One day, Tejas will rule the skies, he said about the light combat aircraft being developed indigenously. "Why should certain political parties oppose privatisation, citing the possibility of military secrets getting leaked? Weapons are made by our own people in our own country. The country should depend on its people rather than on foreigners," he said. India was once importing defence items, now it has become an exporter, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ada jeragat, terus nampak tua! Those passing out of NADP should take up jobs in companies and eventually become entrepreneurs too," said the governor. Radhakrishnan said as Jharkhand governor, he had planned to set up a Sainik University and it would have been in line with Sainik Schools, where the spirit of nationalism and serving the armed forces is instilled. "But my dream remained unfulfilled as I was soon appointed governor of Maharashtra," said Radhakrishnan, hoping that one day the idea would materialise. He also praised NADP's infrastructure.
