Over 340 encroachments on Beed Bypass Road removed, drive resumes on Monday
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The civic body has cleared more than 340 illegal structures along the Beed Bypass Road during its current anti-encroachment drive. The operation, which started on June 3, will continue from Monday following a two-day pause due to festivities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Pramod Jadhav, who oversees Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation's special ex-servicemen squads, confirmed that Rs 2.8 lakh in penalties was collected from residents during the anti-encroachment operation. "The Beed Bypass Road has emerged as one of the fastest-developing commercial and residential areas of the city. The stretch of nearly 6km, from Mahanubhav Chowk to Deolai Chowk, had different encroachments, even on service roads and other road infrastructure. These illegal structures are being removed during the special drive," he said. According to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) officials, the removed structures included both permanent and temporary constructions. "A public notification was issued appealing to people to remove the encroachments. Some of them removed their illegal structures on their own while the remaining did not pay heed to the appeal and attracted fines," Deshmukh said, adding that the drive was carried out under the supervision of municipal commissioner G Sreekanth. Local residents from Satara Deolai and surrounding areas have requested continued action until all unauthorised structures are removed. "Some big hotels and other commercial establishments have encroached upon the service road, causing huge inconvenience to locals. The authorities should also pay attention to service roads being used for illegal vehicle parking by these establishments," said Rajshekhar Wamshi, a private professional.

Senior Congress netas skip local unit's stir on water woes in Sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The local Congress unit on Thursday conducted a protest — over water issues in the city — that was not attended by senior party functionaries, like state Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal as well as district chief and Jalna MP Kalyan Kale. Local party members said Sapkal was less likely to join the protest due to other commitments, whereas Kale, according to them, was unwell. The protesters gathered in front of the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) building and raised slogans against govt and civic authorities for the historic city's water woes. They carried placards displaying empty water pots and played satirical songs performed by local artists. Local Congress functionary Pawan Donagare said saffron parties were responsible for the situation. "Despite enjoying a long rule in CSMC, saffron parties have failed on different fronts. The BJP-led govt is to be equally blamed as it failed to prevail upon authorities for executing the water supply project ," he said. Protesters also alleged that ruling party leaders and a section of civic authorities are colluding with private tanker suppliers to ensure dependence of residents. "If the water woes are not addressed, we urge citizens to not pay water bills. Also, the local body must ensure water tankers in Satara-Deolai and other areas where tap water supply is still a distant dream," Congress functionary Vishal Banswal said. Meanwhile, coinciding with the Congress agitation, BJP leaders held a media briefing on Thursday to launch a counterattack. "The new water supply project slowed down during the MVA rule. We put it right on track after returning to power. The project is expected to get partially commissioned in the next six months," BJP MLA and cabinet minister Atul Save said, terming the Congress protest as politically motivated ahead of civic polls.

Purr-fect plan to tackle stray cat population
Getting ready: Workers at the clinic preparing for the mass neutering of male cats on May 20. MELAKA: A locally founded pet supply store here is making waves with an ambitious initiative aimed at tackling the state's growing stray cat population. Cat Supermarket, under the stewardship of its proprietor Datuk Chew Chert Fong, is offering 200 free neutering slots for male cats. 'The record-breaking effort and the first campaign of its kind in the state is being organised by our subsidiary Cat Specialist Medical Centre Sdn Bhd (CSMC). 'This initiative isn't just about setting a record with the Malaysia Book of Records but also to manage the feral cat population and promote responsible pet ownership among the locals,' he said in an interview. Chew said the mass neutering project will be held at a CSMC clinic next to the Cat Supermarket outlet in Paya Rumput on May 20. He also hopes to collaborate with the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) and plans to invite Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to witness the event. 'The project will be also extended to my other branches in Selangor and Melaka in the future,' he said. Chew also said the programme would be open to locals and animal shelters with 10 veterinarians on-site to perform the procedures. 'The initiative seeks not only to help control overpopulation but to improve the overall health and well-being of cats in the area,' he added. Chew noted that stray cats often fall victim to abuse, disease, starvation, traffic accidents and uncontrolled breeding. 'Some pet owners will abandon their cats in public parks, hoping other people will take care of them. 'It's an unfortunate reality and neutering can address many of these issues,' he said. Chew noted that based on research, neutering helps prevent testicular cancer and reduces the risk of prostate issues in male cats. 'Spaying females, likewise, helps prevent uterine infections. 'Beyond that, neutered cats are less prone to fighting, spraying urine and transmitting infectious diseases like feline immunodeficiency and feline leukemia viruses,' he said. Chew added that neutered cats often enjoy longer and healthier lives, benefiting not just individual animals but the wider community. 'In short, neutering offers tremendous health and behavioural benefits,' he said.

Civic body warns against illegal hoardings in Chhatrapati sambhajinagar
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: The civic body has threatened strict action for erecting illegal hoardings in the city. Stating that different chowks, roadsides, and dividers must be kept free from such hoardings, the civic authorities said any non-compliance would attract action under the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act , 1995. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The Bombay High Court revived a PIL related to illegal hoardings across the state, and the court issued contempt notices to political parties and others as the issue of illegal hoardings still persists. We would appeal to all stakeholders to take note of this," a senior civic official said. With continuous VIP movement and different public celebrations, prominent chowks and roads of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar witness illegal hoardings. Civic authorities said illegal hoardings also snatch revenue of the municipal corporation generated through legal hoardings. "The illegal hoardings have become so rampant that people turn their back towards raising hoardings in a legal manner," authorities said. While Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) takes regular drives against illegal hoardings, fresh hoardings emerge soon after such crackdowns. "Considering the ongoing petition before the Bombay High Court, we will take more stern action against those responsible for illegal hoardings. We cannot allow the court to serve us a separate contempt notice for defacement of the tourist capital of Maharashtra due to hoardings," authorities said. Besides political parties, CSMC is reaching out to different social and religious groups with an appeal for not raising illegal hoardings.
