Caitlin Clark injury update: Fever star to miss 14th regular-season game, remains out with right groin issue

Caitlin Clark has played in 13 games this season. The Indiana Fever superstar will now miss her 14th regular-season game, and 15th game overall since the opener. Clark was listed out for Wednesday's matchup against the Phoenix Mercury, according to IndyStar's Chloe Peterson. Clark remains sidelined with a right groin injury. The Fever announced on July 24 that further medical evaluations Clark received didn't reveal any additional injuries or damage. In the same statement, the team said that "there is no timetable available for Clark's return" and that the organization is prioritizing "her long-term health and well-being." Wednesday's game will be the fifth in a row Clark has sat out. During that span, the Iowa product also had to back out of the WNBA 3-Point Contest as well as the league's All-Star Game. While the Fever hosted All-Star Weekend, Clark still showed up to the Indianapolis festivities and helped coach the team she captained in the All-Star Game. After making it through her illustrious college career and the first season of her pro career mostly unscathed, Clark has been bit by the injury bug this year. Coming off her WNBA Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024, Clark entered her sophomore season in the W with sky-high expectations. Although she missed the preseason opener with left quad tightness, she quickly put that absence in the rear view mirror with a 20-10-10 triple-double in the first game of the regular season. But the now-two-time All-Star didn't get out of May without another injury. A left quad strain took her out of the lineup for five games between May 28 and June 10. She returned, only to then go down with a left groin injury that kept her out for four regular-season games, plus the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final, from June 26 to July 5. The right groin injury is her fourth muscle injury this season. She is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting only 36.7% from the field and 27.9% from 3. Clark, normally a spectacular shooter, has particularly struggled in her last seven games, posting a sub-30% field goal percentage and an uncharacteristic 14.3% clip from beyond the arc during that window. The Fever are currently sixth in the league table with a 14-12 record. They are 6-7 without Clark in the lineup, not counting their victory over the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner's Cup final, which doesn't factor into the standings.

Indiana Fever release Caitlin Clark injury report vs Phoenix Mercury

The Indiana Fever released their injury report for their Wednesday night contest against the Phoenix Mercury. As expected, it doesn't carry the news that Fever fans or Iowa fans were hoping for. Indiana star point guard Caitlin Clark has been ruled out against the Phoenix Mercury with a right groin injury per the Indy Star's Chloe Peterson. Clark's injury absence against the Mercury now makes it 14 regular season games that Clark has missed this season and 15 games overall, including the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final. This latest injury spell has now cost Clark five games. The 6-foot guard exited in the final minute of Indiana's 85-77 win over the Connecticut Sun on July 15 and hasn't played since. Clark's latest injury absence also included missing the 3-Point Contest and the WNBA All-Star Game in which she was one of the two team captains. It's been a season marred and derailed by injury ailments dating back to the preseason. Clark missed the Fever's opening preseason contest with a left leg injury. Then, a left quadriceps strain cost Clark five games from May 28-June 10. That was followed up by a left groin injury that sidelined Clark for four regular season games and the WNBA Commissioner's Cup final from June 26-July 5. The Indiana Fever released an official statement on Clark's injury status and on her recovery last Thursday, July 24. "Caitlin Clark underwent further medical evaluations earlier this week, which confirmed that no additional injuries or damage were discovered. "Clark will continue working with the medical team on her recovery and rehabilitation, with the priority on her long-term health and well-being. There is no timetable available for her return," the Fever's statement read. Clark is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game on 36.7% field goal shooting and 27.9% 3-point accuracy. Sophie Cunningham piques interest of pro wrestling promotion: 'She takes down the competition'

If Sophie Cunningham ever wants another job, she's got one. The Indiana Fever guard is in her seventh WNBA season, but she's hit the big time ever since she started a ruckus in defense of Caitlin Clark. Her fighting skills were put to the test, and a wrestling promotion apparently took notice. Jeanie Buss, the former majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, is the co-owner of Women of Wrestling, and she is heavily intrigued by the WNBA star. "We would love to have [Cunningham] join us at [WOW] she is talented, dedicated, and a fierce competitor!!" Buss posted on X earlier this week. Buss' colleague, Dave McLane, also raved about Cunningham during a recent appearance at Comic Con in San Diego. "I'm from Indiana. I'm from Indianapolis, and that's the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark. And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer. She's the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete," McLane said of Cunningham, via The Daily Mirror. "I flew to Las Vegas and watched them in action against the Aces, and I would love to have Sophia Cunningham in WOW, because she takes down the competition, and she makes sure that Caitlin Clark is safe on the basketball floor. We'd love to have Sophie in WOW." Cunningham, of course, drew the ire of WNBA fans in a game last month after she came to the defense of Clark, who was fouled earlier in the game, by committing a flagrant foul of her own, which resulted in a huge scrum on the court and ejections. Jacy Sheldon poked Clark in the eye. She was also pushed to the floor by Marina Mabrey. Cunningham wrapped up Sheldon under the basket on a hard foul in the fourth quarter, and the two were ejected. "During that, it was just part of the game. I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build-up for a couple years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA," Cunningham told reporters days after the team lost to the Golden State Valkyries. "At the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates. That's what I do."

Sophie Cunningham in Women of Wrestling? Lakers owner Jeanie Buss wants Indiana Fever star

Sophie Cunningham has proven she doesn't mind getting physical with Indiana Fever opponents this season. That is likely a major reason why Women of Wrestling want Cunningham. According to multiple reports, WOW co-founder, owner and Indianapolis native Dave McLane brought up the Fever star at Comic Con in San Diego on Friday. "I'm from Indiana," McLane said, per The Daily Mirror. "I'm from Indianapolis, and that's the home of not only the second-best basketball team in the country this last year, but the biggest name in professional basketball today, Caitlin Clark. And Caitlin Clark has an enforcer. She's the Marty McSorley to Wayne Gretzky, and she is a stunning athlete. "I flew to Las Vegas and watched them in action against the Aces, and I would love to have Sophia Cunningham in WOW, because she takes down the competition, and she makes sure that Caitlin Clark is safe on the basketball floor. We'd love to have Sophie in WOW." WOW's other co-owner, Los Angeles Lakers controlling owner and president Jeanie Buss echoed McLane's message. "We would love to have (Cunningham) join us at @wowsuperheroes she is talented, dedicated and a fierce competitor!!" Buss tweeted. In June, Cunningham committed a late flagrant foul on Connecticut Sun player Jacy Sheldon. Sun coach Rachid Meziane called the foul unnecessary and "completely stupid." Cunningham was ejected from the game. "I'm not focused on the extracurricular activities, and you know what, during that, it was just part of the game," Cunningham said. "I think the refs had a lot to do with that. It was a build up for a couple years now of them just not protecting the star player of the WNBA. So, at the end of the day, I'm going to protect my teammates, that's what I do, and I'm a team player." In July, Cunningham could only joke about what she believed was an obvious missed call in another game against the Sun. Cunningham fought through contact to set a screen for Aliyah Boston, only to be knocked down by the Sun's Leila Lacan. Referees made no call, and Cunningham asked about it.
