See inside the 2025 Scotland's Home of the Year finalists
Giffnock, Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, Broughty Ferry, Isle of Skye and Dalbeattie all feature in the series finale of BBC Scotland's series on Monday, June 2. After visiting 18 contenders in the West, the North East & Northern Isles, East, Central & Tayside, Highlands & Islands and the South, judges – interior designers Anna Campbell-Jones and Banjo Beale along with architect Danny Campbell – will now choose which of the six homes will win. The finale is filmed at Glasgow's House for an Art Lover - designed by the architect Charles Rennie MacIntosh. This year's SHOTY search showcased a variety of styles from period properties to modern new-builds, cosy cottages to bespoke flats, farm steadings to contemporary abodes. This year's finalists are: Sandstone Bungalow, Giffnock Home to Pamela and Gordon, their son Caleb and Rosa the Irish Setter, the Sandstone Bungalow blends together old with new, whilst retaining the original 1930s details. The couple design choices bring the Sandstone Bungalow up-to-date with a bright and modern kitchen, dining and living spaces. Hilltop House, Aberdeenshire Situated on the outskirts of Pitmedden in Aberdeenshire, Hilltop House is home to Chris, Jessica, their son Chase and dogs Enzo and Dino. The couple designed their bright, contemporary house around the original footprint of the farm steading, fusing mid-century and Californian style to create their dream home. Wee City Nook, Edinburgh A first-floor traditional tenement in Edinburgh's Stockbridge area, Wee City Nook is home to Devin and Max. The couple combined their creative skills to design and rebuild each room in this small-but-perfectly-formed home, creating storage solutions, maximising every nook and cranny. Together, they have created a bold, bright and colourful abode. The Tree House, Broughty Ferry A modernist 1960s property in Broughty Ferry, The Tree House is home to Jackie, Paul and their cats Mirren and Kaja. Amongst their changes, they reworked the upstairs space to create their bedroom of dreams overlooking the treetops. An Cala Cottage, Isle of Skye An Cala Cottage is home to Caroline, Lee and their dog, Nuala. This traditional cottage was brought back to life on a budget, with the couple incorporating charming charity shop finds with a creative use of colour throughout. They took inspiration for their interior design from the coastal and mountain views which surround, creating a cosy and relaxing home. Craigmount, near Dalbeattie A Victorian semi-detached house near Dalbeattie, home to Ozzy, Laura, daughter Grace and Ethel the pug. The property's coastal views won the family over and they made it their own by renovating and adding an extension to the original granite building. The family entered Craigmount as Grace's late gran loved SHOTY. Interior designer Anna Campbell-Jones said: 'As always, we have a set of finalists that are each uniquely different from each other, from restored modernist dreams to handcrafted miniature perfection there's inspiration for everyone. When we film the final we are never sure who the winner will be - it could genuinely be any of these amazing homes. "Through debate, much discussion and not a little heartbreak, we gradually whittle them down to one that we all agree has that magical edge - the home that best exemplifies what home means.' Isle of Mull-based Interior Designer Banjo Beale praised the 2025 finalists: 'Each home's bursting with personality - bold, beautiful, and a real labour of love. The finale of SHOTY is the big emotional payoff - surprises, stories, and a stunning winner that'll take your breath away.' Architect Danny Campbell adds: 'This year's finalists are an eclectic celebration of design adventures — bold, heartfelt, and unapologetically individual. Each home tells a story of its owner's passions, priorities and aesthetic DNA, from slick architectural statements to soulful reimagining of traditional spaces. "The finale is always a head-spin - equal parts tension and celebration. Viewers can expect impassioned debates, inspiring interior insights and that brilliant moment where we finally agree on a winner!' The finale will be aired at 8.30pm.

Assaults on NYPD officers surge 63% over six years — and experts warn troubling trend won't end soon
Assaults on NYC cops have surged a shocking 63% over the past six years — and police officers and experts warned this week that the trend will continue because of a criminal-friendly justice system that fails to 'deliver any consequences.' There have been 970 assaults on uniformed police officers in the city so far this year, up from the 595 officers attacked at the same point in pre-pandemic 2019, NYPD data show. The number of assaulted cops, which includes all city law enforcement officers, is up 57% so far this year compared to the same span three years ago, and climbed 4% compared to the same period last year, the data show. The stats emerged amid a spate of recent attacks on cops, including: A maniac chomped off the tip of a sergeant's finger, and then went on to sucker-slap an innocent 9-year-old girl in Queens on May 10. Feliz Enrique, 31, walked up to the youngster as she was playing on a Glendale street, asked her name, then smacked her in the face without any warning, Queens DA Melissa Katz alleged. A Times Square officer who was punched in the jaw at 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday while trying to lead the man safely out of traffic. After Aaron Domsky, 21, a Californian, allegedly attacked the officer, he also slapped a 19-year-old woman in the face and drove his elbow into the back of a 35-year-old woman's head, according to a criminal complaint filed in Manhattan Criminal Court. NYPD housing officer Chowdhury Nafees, 27, was brutally beaten and robbed by two goons while headed home from work last Saturday in the Bronx, leaving him semi-conscious and with severe facial injuries, including a broken orbital socket. Nafees' younger brother, Chowdhury Navid, said his brother was telling the masked men to just take his belongings during the May 24 attack because he wanted to get through the ordeal. 'He was on his way home … and suddenly these two perpetrators out of nowhere, one with a knife and the other with a gun, they disarmed him and they robbed him,' Navid, 24, told The Post. 'My brother initially didn't want to reveal his identity,' Navid said, adding that Nafees told the robbers to take his wallet and money. 'They saw the uniform and they were like 'Oh, s–t, this is a f—ing cop.'' But that didn't stop them — it made the beatdown even worse, the brother said. 'After that, they assaulted him because he was a cop,' the brother said. 'There was no other reason. He was cooperating so that he could get away without any harm. Their anger toward the police department and the criminal justice system was deep enough for them to continue hurting my brother.' The rookie officer, who joined the NYPD in September, had a knife placed to his throat as he was robbed of his gun, shield and phone on St. Peter's Avenue in Westchester Square, video of the attack showed. One of the goons even kicked Nafees in the face before fleeing. The officer underwent successful surgery on his eye at Jacobi Hospital and was sent home Wednesday, the brother said. 'I don't want this to happen to anybody, not just my brother because he's a police officer,' he said, adding that his family was considering moving away from the city. 'I don't want anyone to face anything like this ever.' Robert Garland, a retired NYPD detective and founder of which is hosting a fundraiser for Nafees, said the men should face an extended prison sentence for assaulting a police officer. 'If they're not brought to proper justice, others will know,' said Garland, adding that other criminals will assume they can do the same. 'They'll think, 'I'm going to go out there and I'm going to beat up a cop,'' he said. ''I'll only go to jail for a few years.'' One of the alleged culprits, Taveon Hargrove, 23, was arrested Tuesday in Virginia, where investigators believe he fled to a family friend's home. Fellow suspect, 23-year-old Wayne Lucas was also nabbed in Virginia — wearing a long wig as a disguise, police said. The revolving-door criminal justice system in the city is leading to the increase in assaults, said retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at Penn State University-Lehigh Valley, Joseph Giacalone. 'You have DAs like Alan Bragg who don't even want to prosecute felony assaults against cops,' he said. 'So where's the deterrence? You have a criminal justice system that's a revolving door and people are getting arrested 40, 50, 60 times. The cops are dealing with people out on the streets who are really bad.' 'I think it actually just gets worse,' he warned. 'I think people have just lost respect for the NYPD.' One retired veteran NYPD detective believes more cops are being assaulted because they're taught to deescalate situations. 'It's always deescalate and never take control, which often emboldens perp and gives them an advantage,' the retired officer said. PBA President Patrick Hendry blamed a lack of fear of assaulting cops on a dearth of consequences. 'When these two vicious criminals found out they were attacking a police officer, they didn't get scared and run away,' he said. 'They beat him even harder. These assault statistics are a product of the same criminal mindset. 'They have no fear because they don't believe the justice system will deliver any consequences.' Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch vowed a swift response to any assaults on police officers. 'Attack one of our own and you will get the full force of the greatest police department in the world coming for you,' she wrote on X.

Draper downs Fonseca to reach the French Open last 16
The fifth seed produced a polished performance in seeing off the 18-year-old 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in front of a Court Suzanne Lenglen which featured an audible core of Brazilian supporters. Draper, the runner-up at the Madrid Open this season, will next face former world number 17 Alexander Bublik or 200th-ranked Henrique Rocha for a spot in the quarter-finals. Draper eased ahead of Fonseca with an early break to lead 2-1 in the first set, before the world number five broke again and held service to clinch the opener. The Briton survived two break-back points while serving for the second set but managed to see out the tightly-contested frame when Fonseca dumped an attempted forehand winner into the net. Defeat in the 10th game of the second set seemed to deflate Fonseca as Draper immediately broke him twice to race into a 4-0 lead in the decider before serving out for the win. Draper now holds a 2-0 record over Fonseca, with their previous meeting ending in a straight-sets victory for the 23-year-old at Indian Wells earlier this year. That match was the start of Draper's successful run in the Californian desert, which culminated in his first Masters title.

Like siblings hugging in a snowstorm, Heavenly Mountain Resort has two distinct sides – one in Nevada and the other California. Here's how to ski both in 72 hours, enjoying stunning Lake Tahoe views, epic tree runs, swathes of powder and a fun village. X DAY ONE: Afternoon Turn away from famous Lake Tahoe and point your rental all-wheel drive uphill, along a narrow road hugged by old lodges. You'll weave around bends that become increasingly white with snow until you find yourself side-by-side with skiers zipping down one of Heavenly's home trails. Instead of parking and racing onto the slopes, climb higher to the behemoth that is Tahoe Ridge Resort, a Holiday Inn Club Vacations property clinging to the mountainside. Spend the afternoon in the resort's heated pool, partially undercover but mostly not, and enjoy the magic of tiny flakes dancing to the water. Dinner One of the benefits of staying in a resort as large as Tahoe Ridge is you don't need to leave. In the main building, you can play pool and ping-pong, then enjoy burgers at The Ridge Club Bistro. If you feel like eating in your apartment, there's the small Marketplace on site, or you can drive 30 minutes down the mountain into Gardnerville for groceries. Tahoe Ridge Resort. DAY TWO: Morning After frying up bacon and eggs in your apartment, catch Tahoe Ridge Resort's fun Skier Express gondola to Stagecoach Express. The chairlift leads to some of the mountain's best intermediate runs, and if the snow has fallen thick and fast overnight, you can take advantage of the advanced wooded areas, chutes and bowls on the Nevada side of Heavenly. Lunch By lunchtime, make your way to Tamarack Lodge, a handy meeting point for friends riding opposite sides of the resort. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, so nab a table and cover it with plates of chicken tenders, pizzas and bowls of chilli. Heavenly Mountain Gondola. Afternoon If you're travelling with kids, take it slow in the beginner zone outside Tamarack Lodge. This is where you'll find the children's Ski & Ride School, as well as tubing and an alpine coaster. Families can access the tubing and coaster – without the need to ski – via Heavenly's gondola, caught from the heart of Heavenly Village, on the California side. Evening Enjoy an easy apartment dinner before making your way to Tahoe Ridge's single-room cinema to watch a complimentary screening of The Super Mario Bros Movie. If you prefer community stores oozing authenticity, drive to The Village Board Shop to browse a top range of boards and outerwear. Lunch You're spoilt for choice for village dining options, but for something simple and affordable, swing by Sugar Pine Bakery for cinnamon scrolls and apple pies. Or for a real change of pace you can join locals at Cuppa Tahoe, a café in a bookshop with fabulous cosy nooks filled with vintage furniture and chalkboards. Picture: Jennifer Ennion Afternoon Head back to the village for a spin on the small Heavenly Village Ice Rink before heading to The Baked Bear for an over-the-top ice-cream cookie sandwich. With bellies stretched, check into Forest Suites Resort, a sprawling low-level property a short stroll from Heavenly Mountain Gondola. It has an inviting foyer lounge, outdoor hot tubs, and apartments with full kitchens. Dinner Skip the tourist traps and cross the highway to Poké Rok, offering visitors a refreshing break from burgers and fried food. Order a giant sushi roll with crab or shrimp, or a poke bowl brimming with ahi tuna, salmon or teriyaki chicken. Your body will thank you for it. Forest Suites Resort at Heavenly Village. DAY FOUR: Morning Forest Suites offers a decent free buffet breakfast of pancakes, hash browns and sausages. You can then catch the gondola to mid-mountain or, to fully experience the California side of Heavenly, hop on the free shuttle to California Lodge. Eager skiers jump on the chairlift here, but if the weather is particularly wild, line up for the aerial tramway. There's a stack of epic runs on this side of the mountain, especially if you score a fresh snow day. If you're advanced, drop into Powder Bowl Woods and be sure to ride the black terrain back to the base at the end of the day. Lunch Lakeview Lodge is a great lunch spot, offering a cosy respite from a snowstorm. This lodge is the quintessential back-to-basics experience with plenty of character and window seats. Make yourself a cup of hot apple cider, order the gyro and grab a rocky road cookie while they're warm. Afternoon Spend the rest of the day lapping your favourite runs. If it's snowing heavily, keep your eyes on the opening of the Sky Express chair so you can claim more fresh turns through trees or down fast blues.
