Rihanna debuts at No. 1 with 'Friend of Mine' on Billboard's Dance Digital Song Sales chart, beating DJ Snake and Avicii

Rihanna has returned and how! The queen of pop is back on the top of the charts, as her latest release 'Friend of Mine' debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Dance Digital Song Sales chart this week. The track has become the top-selling dance song in the United States, as measured by Billboard. This marks a significant moment in Rihanna's career, as it is her third time reaching the summit of this specific chart. Her last No. 1 came back in 2016 with 'This Is What You Came For,' a collaboration with Calvin Harris. Before that, she first claimed the top spot in June 2012 with 'Where Have You Been.' 'Friend of Mine' is one of seven new entries on the 15-song chart this week. Despite strong competition from well-known artists including DJ Snake, Kesha, and the late Avicii, Rihanna secured the top spot. Avicii, who passed away in 2018, makes a posthumous appearance with 'Let's Ride Away,' a new collaboration with Elle King. In total, Rihanna has now earned 11 appearances on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart. Impressively, ten of those entries have reached the top 10. Two of her well-known tracks, 'We Found Love' (also with Calvin Harris) and 'Who's That Chick?' with David Guetta, both peaked at No. 2, narrowly missing out on the No. 1 position. This new chart-topping success further cements Rihanna's enduring popularity in the dance music space. While fans continue to hope for a full studio album, 'Friend of Mine' serves as a reminder of her ability to dominate the charts with fresh, energetic releases.

Rihanna Lands Her First New No. 1 In Almost A Decade

Rihanna's 'A Friend of Mine' launches at No. 1 on Billboard's Dance Digital Song Sales chart, ... More earning the singer her third champion and first in almost a decade. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 26: Rihanna attends her immersive beauty event in honor of Fenty Beauty's newest product launch, Soft'lit Naturally Luminous Longwear Foundation at 7th Street Studios on April 26, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by) Rihanna releases music so infrequently that a huge debut is typically expected whenever she does give the world something new. Sadly, that's not quite what came to pass with 'Friend of Mine,' her first single in several years. The tune, taken from the upcoming Smurfs animated movie, does manage to conquer one important Billboard ranking as it arrives — and in doing so, it adds to her list of champions, which hasn't increased in almost a decade. 'Friend of Mine' launches atop the Dance Digital Song Sales chart this week, which means it is the top-selling track in America currently classified by Billboard specifically as dance. The tune is one of seven new arrivals on the 15-spot roster, and Rihanna manages to beat out exciting drops from stars in the genre like DJ Snake, Kesha, and even Avicii, who posthumously returns with his new collaboration 'Let's Ride Away' with Elle King. Rihanna scores her third No. 1 on the Dance Digital Song Sales ranking as 'Friend of Mine' arrives. The tune marks her first new leader since 'This Is What You Came For' with Calvin Harris, which debuted in first place in May 2016. She first ruled in June 2012 with 'Where Have You Been.' Throughout her career, Rihanna has collected a total of 11 placements on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart, and all but one of those have reached the top 10. She missed out on adding to her expanding roster of champions by just one space with both 'We Found Love' — another collaboration with Harris — and 'Who's That Chick?' alongside David Guetta, as both tunes stalled at No. 2. 'Friend of Mine' is a quick top 10 on a number of Billboard's dance-only tallies. As it leads the Dance Digital Song Sales chart, it enters the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs tally at No. 3, earning Rihanna her first career placement on that list. The cut also kicks off its time on the Dance Streaming Songs tally at No. 6. Rihanna also manages to hit No. 1 on one other Billboard list, but 'Friend of Mine' doesn't enjoy quite as much of a celebration on that tally as it does on the Dance Digital Song Sales roster. The catchy cut appears in first place on the Bubbling Under Hot 100, meaning it misses landing on the Hot 100 — the main ranking of the most consumed tracks in America — by just one space. So, while it technically sits at No. 1, that's not really a major accomplishment for her.

Vick appeared to be having the time of her life at the festival as she took to Instagram with snaps of herself enjoying with co-host Jamie. The pair caught some of the Liverpool festival's biggest acts including Mel C's surprise performance with Tom Grennan. She even had a chance to let her hair down in the BBC presenter's raised platform, where she danced with the crew. The mother-to-be also had a chance to catch up with her fellow co-presenters Arielle Free, Greg James and Lauren Layfied. She wore a comfortable-looking black dress and trainers, which put her impending arrival on full display. Vick and Calvin are reported to be in the process of building a mansion on their Cotswolds estate, which is reported to become their main place of residence. The couple tied the knot in September 2023 and only just announced their impending arrival, choosing to keep their relationship largely out of the spotlight. Vick stressed on air that she didn't want to make a big deal out of her pregnancy. She said: 'This is not an announcement, by the way. People keep saying are you going to announce, are you going to announce? And I'm like, I'm not the King. 'I'll be honest, I struggle with anything that's personal or private. I will tell you a story about eating a kebab out of a bin, that's one thing. 'But there's a line and so I've never been that big on sharing. Particularly because I've just been enjoying this privately and quietly.'

Rihanna's New Single Launches At A Disappointing Low

Later this summer, Rihanna's new movie The Smurfs will arrive in theaters globally. In addition to voicing one of the Smurfs, the Barbadian pop icon also wrote and performed new music for the film, which seems to be a major selling point for the animated adventure. The first track from the project, a single titled 'Friend of Mine,' debuts on charts all around the world this week. Despite the built-up anticipation for not just this tune, but any work from the superstar, the cut underperforms expectations, especially true in the United Kingdom. 'Friend of Mine' debuts at No. 72 on the Official Singles chart, the tally that ranks the most consumed tracks across several different formats in the nation. That's a very low starting point for a new Rihanna cut — and it's a disappointing peak she hasn't had to settle for in quite a while. Rihanna hasn't seen a track peak that low in almost a decade. The last time one of her songs stalled even lower on the main singles list in the U.K. was in March 2016, when 'Consideration,' her collaboration with SZA featured on Anti, spent one frame at No. 88. Since 'Consideration' debuted, Rihanna has scored some lesser hits and a number of huge wins across the ocean. She added a new No. 1 in June 2017 as a featured act alongside Bryson Tiller on DJ Khaled's 'Wild Thoughts.' She also broke into the top 10 with 'This Is What You Came For' alongside Calvin Harris, 'Too Good' with Drake, and with her own 'Lift Me Up' from the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. 'Friend of Mine' opens in similar positions on the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts as well. Rihanna's cut launches at No. 79 on the former and No. 75 on the latter. In both instances, she reaches a milestone number of placements, as the Smurfs cut earns the singer her thirtieth placement on the general sales tally and her seventieth on the list of the most downloaded tunes in the U.K. Rihanna's latest offering debuts highest on the Official Dance Singles chart. The superstar earns her seventh win on that list as 'Friend of Mine' kicks off its time at No. 19.
