Media giant Canal+ strikes settlement with French tax authorities

Shares in Canal+ rose on Friday after the London-listed media conglomerate settled a tax dispute with the French Government. The StudioCanal owner, which listed in London last December, told investors it expects no impact on cash from the settlement. French authorities had accused the Paris-based company, formerly a subsidiary of telecoms giant Vivendi, of incorrectly applying lower rates of value-added tax on some of its services. Canal+ had warned that the dispute could have potentially cost it around €655million. It anticipates recording some exceptional charges in its first-half results, but told investors the settlement 'removes uncertainty regarding the possibility of a material additional disbursement'. Alongside this, the firm upheld its full-year outlook on turnover and earnings before nasties, with the latter expected to total approximately €515million. It came as Canal+ said it was on track to achieve organic growth this year because of a 'material one-off cash improvement'. But the business cautioned that this would be offset by the end of some contracts and the closure of terrestrial television channel C8 in February. The group's distribution deal with Disney+ ended at the start of 2025, resulting in its roughly 27 million subscribers losing access to the streaming service. In late February, C8 shut down after regulators revoked its broadcasting licence following accusations of promoting fake news and conspiracy theories. Consequently, its first-quarter turnover fell by 2.5 per cent to €1.55billion, although organic sales increased by 1.5 per cent, thanks to a robust performance by its film studios division. StudioCanal's recent box office successes include the animated sequel Paddington In Peru, horror film The Monkey, romantic drama We Live in Time, and comedy Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. In a rare victory for the UK capital, Canal+ went public on the London Stock Exchange last year after Vivendi shareholders voted to spin off the group. It debuted with an estimated £2.5billion valuation, making it the LSE's largest flotation in two years. Just 45 businesses applied to join the main London market in 2024, compared to 59 the year before and 111 in 2022, according to the Financial Conduct Authority. By comparison, 88 companies delisted or transferred their primary listing from the LSE, the largest number since the global financial crisis in 2008, figures from EY have shown. Canal+ shares rose 7.1 per cent to 215p on Friday morning, although this is far below its initial public offering price of 290p.

Teenager Doue caps dream season by starring in PSG's Champions League triumph

"I don't have the words. It is a dream come true. It is just magnificent," Doue told broadcaster Canal Plus in a brief interview as delirious PSG fans invaded the pitch at the Allianz Arena after seeing their team win the trophy for the first time. No player embodies the youthful energy and dynamism of Luis Enrique's thrilling PSG side quite like Doue, who has enjoyed a remarkable campaign and has now announced himself to the wider world with his display in Munich. Doue's masterclass, which came only three days before his 20th birthday, saw him set up Achraf Hakimi for PSG's early opener. He then became just the third teenager to score in the final of the modern Champions League as he made it 2-0 on the night. The French international followed in the footsteps of Patrick Kluivert, who was still 18 when he netted for Ajax in 1995, and the Brazilian Carlos Alberto Gomes, a 19-year-old scorer for Porto in 2004. Doue later scored again before being brought off to rapturous applause and seeing another teenager get on the scoresheet, substitute Senny Mayulu wrapping up the victory with the fifth goal a fortnight after turning 19. "What we have done today is magical. We have made French and Europan football history and I am so pleased with how everything has gone this season," Doue said after what was the biggest ever win by any club in the final. An astonishing season for PSG following talisman Kylian Mbappe's departure has seen them win Europe's elite club competition for the first time after also completing a domestic league and cup double. It has been an especially remarkable year for Doue, whose dazzling feet recall former PSG superstar Neymar at his very best. Doue joined PSG from Rennes in August for a reported 50 million euros ($56.7m), signing a five-year deal. He had made 76 appearances for Rennes across the previous two campaigns, getting his debut aged 17 in August 2022. Olympic silver to European glory Yet Doue needed time to settle into his new surroundings, not least having played for Thierry Henry's France team on their run to the final of the Paris Olympics. He started just four games for Luis Enrique's side in the first four months of the season, including in a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal. However, his progress from mid-December onwards was startling and coincided with a remarkable run of form by his team. Doue has become a regular starter, and played a key part in Luis Enrique's team getting to the final, including scoring the first goal in a 3-0 win at Salzburg in December which kickstarted their European campaign. He then converted the decisive kick in the penalty shoot-out against Liverpool in the last 16 before also scoring a superb goal against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals. Talented by name Doue, whose name appropriately translates as "talented", finishes the campaign with 15 goals and 16 assists in 54 appearances. "It is my first season here, and it was a dream when I came here to win (the Champions League). Great players have played here and not won it but we have shown incredible collective strength and it is just magnificent," he said. "I needed time to adapt to playing for Paris Saint-Germain but I have great players alongside me and that helps me get better every day. "We still have great things to try to achieve with this club." Doue expressed excitement about the prospect of returning to Paris to celebrate during a planned parade down the Champs-Elysees, but he will have to quickly get back to work. His elder brother Guela, with whom he played at Rennes, plays international football for Ivory Coast, the land of their father's birth. Desire, meanwhile, had his progress since moving to PSG rewarded when he was given his senior France debut in March. He will return to Germany to represent France in next week's UEFA Nations League finals, before jetting off with PSG to the United States as they chase more silverware in the Club World Cup. © 2025 AFP

Jérémy Jacquet close to contract extension at Rennes

According to Canal+ and former L'Équipe journalist Bertrand Latour, Stade Rennais are set to extend the contract of promising centre-back Jérémy Jacquet (19). The young centre-back has been the subject of interest from European clubs including RB Leipzig near the tail-end of the season. Jacquet has seamlessly adapted to Habib Beye's backline after being recalled from a loan at Clermont where he spent the first half of the season. Even if it meant that Rennes had to spend €900k on a player that was already on their books – the youngster returned to his parent club and starred during the Breton club's resurgence during the second half of the Ligue 1 season. Jacquet is already tied-down at Rennes until 2027, but the club will be looking to trigger a further year in his contract in the hopes of either keeping the player this summer, or extracting the maximal value they can for the Frenchman in the case of an offer that they can't refuse. Ibrahima Konate drops CRYPTIC Liverpool future hint

Liverpool are now officially the Premier League champions, having lifted the trophy in front of a packed Anfield crowd on Sunday afternoon as the 2024/25 season came to an end. The attention now turns to the summer transfer window, with rife speculation about players' futures. Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace was a result that fell into insignificance now that the title has been wrapped up and the players had their minds firmly focussed on the afterparty. But when once everything started to die down, the world's media was invited in to the proceedings and a whole host of interviews were delivered. Ibrahima Konate's was a fascinating listen. Speaking to the French network Canal+ about the title win, he said: "No, it's incredible, especially [with such] a beautiful trophy. I dreamed of it. I was waiting for it so much." "I hope it's the first in a long series too." While this is a particularly cryptic translation from French to English, this claim is presumably in relation to the Premier League, although it could also relate to him simply winning a league title. But until this is cleared up, I think we can definitely consider it to be a positive hint about his future. The last inclination we received from the Frenchman that he might be remaining at Liverpool next season was following the Reds win over Tottenham at Anfield - a game that sealed the title win. At the time, he sat in the stands at the stadium once everyone had left and he revealed to the club's website that he felt incredibly emotional about what he had achieved. The feeling of understanding what it was like for the fans to be at Anfield was 'indescribable' and he was 'close to crying'. Alas, Liverpool fans had hope that Konate might reconsider contract talks with the club. I mean, why would you choose to leave after that? Although the emotions don't seem to have been able to change Trent Alexander-Arnold's perspective on leaving, so we're left in the dark once again. Konate moving to Paris Saint German is a legitimate possibility, given the package that he is being offered, and Liverpool might be forced into selling him if a contract breakthrough isn't on the cards. And he would almost certainly experience more league titles if he joined the Parisian giants, but success with PSG surely wouldn't mean more to him that this season's win with Liverpool, would it? That's the ultimate question. As a Frenchman who grew up in the capital, the temptation to move on is going to be massive, so the correct translation of what he means when he says "I hope it's the first in a long series as well" will be crucial. For now at least, we have good reason to think positively.
