Kate Beckinsale says 'Canary Black' producers made her perform 'dangerous' action stunts
Kate Beckinsale is suing the producers of her 2024 film "Canary Black," claiming she was exposed to "unsafe" working conditions and forced to perform stunts resulting in "debilitating" injuries. In a lawsuit first filed anonymously in December, amended May 21 and obtained by USA TODAY June 12, Beckinsale alleged that the "extremely challenging and physically demanding" action role, in which she plays a former CIA agent, caused "significant trauma to her left knee." Media site Puck was first to report the lawsuit. Beckinsale is suing producer John Zois, Anton Entertainment Media Services and Canary Black LTD for negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and battery. Beckinsale, 51, is requesting a jury trial, as well as economic, non-economic and punitive damages. USA TODAY has reached out to Beckinsale and Zois' reps for comment. Kate Beckinsale details assault on set at 18, more abuse after Blake Lively complaint Beckinsale, who filmed the movie from late 2022 to early 2023, said despite prior agreements and the actress and her team raising the alarm on what they call "unsafe" conditions – including 15-hour shooting days, surprise stunts and lack of adequate equipment and medical personnel on set – the production "recklessly and intentionally" forged ahead, according to the lawsuit. Before filming began in Croatia in September 2022, Beckinsale and the movie's producers had agreed to have physical health resources – including gym equipment, a physical trainer or a qualified massage therapist – but none were provided, the lawsuit stated. She was also contracted to be on set for no more than 12 hours, which filming routinely pushed past. She said the producers would often deviate from the filming schedule and inform her of stunts "spur of the moment," therefore "recklessly increasing the risk of injury." And she recalled being told on the same day that scenes previously set to be filmed via green screen were suddenly "practical." At one point, Beckinsale's stuntwoman broke an ankle after a "dangerous" scene. As a replacement, the producers provided an "unqualified" stunt performer who was "simply the girlfriend of the stunt coordinator." According to Beckinsale, Zois at another point told her "that the production company had failed" to do "any significant training period" for things like harness work. In November 2022, Beckinsale and her team brought concerns to Zois, per the filing, which he purportedly acknowledged. "I don't know what else to say other than you're right," he said, according to the suit. And "bottom line, we need to shorten these days…The days are too packed for the pace we are moving and it's CLEARLY not sustainable." However, conditions did not change, the lawsuit states. And in a December 2022 incident, Beckinsale was directed to perform a "dangerous" stunt with a male actor that involved throwing and slamming her into a wall, per the filing. The actor was fully padded, while Beckinsale only received mini pads, providing no protection. Despite her complaints, many takes were shot, resulting in her suffering a complex meniscus tear in her left knee, the suit said. The lawsuit stated that Beckinsale was immediately pressured to return to finish the film, with the actress asserting her return was contingent upon her doctor approving the shot list and the team sticking to strict physical limitations. Despite the medical orders, when the actress returned in February 2023, the film's producers failed to adhere to orders, continuing to inform her of unsafe action shots last minute, which caused further injury. Kate Beckinsale Praises Pets for ‘Holding Us by a Thread' After ‘Canary Black' Lawsuit Goes Public
Kate Beckinsale is seemingly finding solace in her beloved animals after amending a lawsuit she filed against the company and producers behind her 2024 action film Canary Black. On June 11, the actress, 51, shared a video of herself wearing a white dress, an oversized black bow and black boots while holding her dog. 'Shoutout to the furry ones holding us by a thread,' Beckinsale wrote alongside the video, which was accompanied by Randy Newman's 'You've Got a Friend in Me.' She followed up the post with photos of Kate Truitt's Keep Breathing: A Psychologist's Intimate Journey Through Loss, Trauma, and Rediscovering Life and underlined pages from the book. The posts come on the heels of a lawsuit the Underworld alum filed against Anton Entertainment Media Services, Inc; Canary Black, LTD; producer John Zois; and more — who she worked with on the thriller — being made public. In December 2024, Beckinsale sued the parties for negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and battery under the name Jane Doe — however on May 21, Beckinsale amended the lawsuit to include her name. In the newly amended filing, obtained by Star, the actress alleges she was 'repeatedly exposed to unsafe and dangerous conditions' on set of Canary Black, which resulted in Beckinsale 'suffering severe and debilitating injuries.' According to the documents, Beckinsale and her team brought up their concerns regarding 'long, dangerous set days, often lasting fifteen hours, inadequate equipment and medical personnel to help manage the high physical workload and recover from the exertion off set.' It also claims Beckinsale was not adequately informed about challenging stunts ahead of time. In 2022, Beckinsale emailed Zois and expressed her concerns about being unprepared and undertrained when it involved stunts, including one involving hanging from a wire. 'SpEaking [sic] last night to a few actors and actresses I know in my position, no one has ever been told something was green screen and found out day of a portion of it was practical,' Beckinsale told the producer, per the documents. 'What I am suggesting is merely what has been absolutely standard on every movie I have appeared in before.' The documents also claim that Beckinsale was not given appropriate padding for a scene in which an actor threw her against a wall, resulting in 'significant injuries, including a complex meniscus tear in her left knee.' Two months before Beckinsale filed the initial lawsuit under the name 'Jane Doe', she took to Instagram to dispel a review by The Guardian that theorized that she didn't do her own stunts. 'Kicking impeccably chic ass 🩷and a couple of close ups doesn't half hurt lol,' she captioned a post that featured clips of herself in action and photos of various injuries she seemingly sustained on set.

Kate Beckinsale Sues "Canary Black" Producers over Unsafe Conditions
Yara Sameh Kate Beckinsale has sued the producers of her 2024 action movie 'Canary Black,' alleging that she suffered a significant knee injury during filming on an unsafe set in Croatia. Beckinsale alleges that she was injured while shooting an action scene with minimal padding. She pointed out that the scene should have been done by a stunt performer, but that her stunt double had previously broken her ankle. The lawsuit alleges that filming days would go as long as 15 hours, despite a 12-hour limit in the actress' contract, exposing her to hazards arising from fatigue. During filming in December 2022, Beckinsale was to perform in a scene in which another actor threw her against a wall. 'Ms. Beckinsale complained that the scene did not seem safe, and that the throwing of her into the wall was too hard and too dangerous,' the lawsuit alleges. 'Notwithstanding the complaints by Ms. Beckinsale, there were numerous takes of this dangerous scene.' According to the complaint, Beckinsale suffered a complex tear of her left meniscus. She sought medical care and was out of commission for a couple of months, returning to set in February to finish the film. The "Underworld" actress alleges that even then, the producers ignored the limitations imposed by her doctors and again coerced her into performing unsafe action scenes. Beckinsale's attorneys filed a cursory version of the lawsuit in December, listing Beckinsale as 'Jane Doe.' They did not serve Anton Entertainment, the defendants, until after amending the complaint with more detailed allegations, and with Beckinsale's name, in May. "Canary Black" debuted last year on Amazon Prime. Beckinsale has had several health issues in recent years. In 2024, she disclosed that she had been hospitalized for six weeks for an esophageal tear, which she attributed to a grief response to her stepfather's death. She also said a severe flare of her mast cell disease had contributed to her illness. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Kate Beckinsale sues producers of thriller Canary Black over ‘unsafe conditions'
Kate Beckinsale is suing the producers of Canary Black, the 2024 action thriller in which she starred, over claims she suffered 'severe and debilitating injuries' as a result of 'unsafe conditions'. In news first reported by Puck, Beckinsale's legal complaint was filed anonymously in June 2024, but has now been refiled under her full name Kathrin Beckinsale. The document claims that Beckinsale was routinely compelled to work 15-hour days during the film's shoot, which began in September 2022 in Croatia. Added to this, Beckinsale alleges that the workout equipment and physical trainers she had requested to 'stay in top shape for the physical demands of the role' were not provided, and she subsequently suffered 'a complex meniscus tear in her left knee' as a result of a scene in which she was thrown into a wall, which was aggravated when she was 'coerced' into performing 'unsafe action sequences' after she returned to work. The document adds that Beckinsale's stunt performer broke her ankle and 'rather than replace her with a competent and qualified stunt [performer]', the producers 'hired an unqualified stunt woman who was simply the girlfriend of the stunt coordinator'. The legal complaint also includes communications between Beckinale's agent Shani Rosenzweig and the film's producers, with Rosenzweig criticising the lack of preparation and training for the film's action sequences. Rosenzweig wrote: 'No one is actually taking real action to put a plan in place to fix this situation …' Before demanding to know: 'How you are … making sure your lead actress works 12 hour days and has time to prep for work on her own when she leaves the set while getting the rest her body so desperately needs. If you're trying to kill a person, you're doing a great job.' A message in response from John Zois, one of the film's producers, reads: 'I don't know what else to say other than you're right … The days are too packed for the pace we are moving and it's CLEARLY not sustainable.' The Guardian has contacted Zois and the film's sales representatives Anton for comment.
