The Dekalb County Schools Superintendent responded Tuesday to a video of students fighting a teacher that has gone viral. The fight happened April 22 at Martin Luther King Junior High School. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The superintendent said there was a verbal altercation before what was seen in the video and an attempt to break up a disagreement, Channel 2's Candace McCowan reported. The camera picks up what happened next, and it is now being used in the investigation. You can see the teacher being punched, others trying to break it up and then other swings from students and the teacher himself. Three students have been charged with battery and disrupting public school. The teacher is on administrative leave during the investigation. Superintendent Devon Horton and Principal Michael Alexander laid out what they are doing to prevent fights like this one, like mentors and de-escalation training. Horton spoke about the three students who are now facing charges. 'I don't support them being criminalized. I do not,' he said. 'Every student deserves an opportunity, right? And I will say they are some factors that we are aware of that could have prevented this, and so we are looking into that right now.' One of the students involved just moved to the district a month ago. He wasn't in the mentoring program. There were parents have raised questions about the incident, concerned about what they saw and what they want to see happen. Major cuts across the federal government from the Department of Health and Human Services led to hundreds of employees at the Centers for Disease and Control being cut on Tuesday. Eileen Bell, who was months away from retirement, says she was included in the mass cuts on Tuesday morning. 'It would have been 20 years October 1st,' said Bell. 'I came in, so about 6:30, I saw that 'We regret to inform you that you have been RIF'd notice today.'' Starting with 'I regret to inform you' and telling them this is no reflection of their service, performance or conduct, but they're now on administrative leave. 'What do you do after that? And I'm a wartime veteran. I served in Desert Storm. We're told that veterans aren't going to initially be affected, they would be on the bottom. Well, that wasn't the case,' said Bell. Bell said the emotions came when she saw her co-workers. 'After seeing after seeing everybody upset, it got me in that space. In the hallway, in the elevators, in the lobby.' Marietta City School District approves use of AI weapons detectors
Pass-through weapons detectors were approved by the Marietta City School Board Tuesday night. The same pass-through detectors we've seen installed in Atlanta Public Schools middle and high schools, as well as at Gwinnett County High School football games, are making their way to Marietta City schools. Evolv Technology uses artificial intelligence and advanced sensors to tell the difference between weapons and everyday items. It passed unopposed by Marietta City school board members Tuesday night. 'What we will do this spring is do some test runs and we will implement it across all four campuses August 1st first next year,' MCS Superintendent Grant Rivera told Channel 2′s Candace McCowan. The district said pass-through detectors are their latest layer of security. They've already added more School Resource Officers and previously rolled out an AI weapons detection system that uses computer software with existing cameras to spot anyone with a visible weapon. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] With Tuesday's vote, the district says with $550,000 in state school safety funds, students can now plan on passing through Evolv detectors each day. The technology will be used at Marietta High School, Marietta Middle School, Marietta Sixth Grade Academy, and the Woods-Wilkins Campus. 'Evolv is important to us because we believe we can get students through the doors as fast as possible. The last thing we want is to put a security measure in place then have students that are late to class,' Rivera said. Some parents are cautious. 'It took me a minute to wrap my brain around it,' Jenny Storino who has a student in middle and high school within Marietta City Schools said. 'Some people feel more safe that way. It puts me in a different position and mindset than necessarily what I'm used to at a school.' Other parents said it was time. 'We want them to be able to go to school protected and come home,' parent Arsenio Young said.
