Where to Eat, Stay and Play in Provincetown, Cape Cod's Historic LGBTQ+ and Arts Haven
A lot of beach towns can feel similar to each other, but there truly isn't anywhere else like Provincetown, Massachusetts. Getting here requires a deliberate effort, as it's nestled at the outermost tip of Cape Cod, about sixty-five miles down Route 6 from the mainland's Sagamore Bridge. There's no accidentally finding yourself here—but seek and you shall find. Today, Provincetown remains one of the most vibrant and beautiful destinations on the East Coast, albeit something of a chameleon. It has a reputation as both an LGBTQ+ summer colony and a niche artists' enclave. But Provincetown is, in fact, also deeply entwined with the American narrative: It was Provincetown Harbor where the Pilgrims first anchored before landing at Plymouth, and it was in these waters that they signed the Mayflower Compact, the first document to establish self-government in the New World. People of all persuasions and expressions have been coming here for centuries to live freer lives. If your own journey brings you to Provincetown, you'll find that this is one of the most welcoming beach towns in the country, if not the world. It's certainly the only place where you might go to the beach and find VIPs like Ryan Murphy or Ken Fulk, next to a local family, next to a gaggle of drag queens. Everyone is welcome, and everyone is welcome to be themselves in P-town. Here's where we suggest you eat, stay and explore for the best things to do in Provincetown. Getting to (and around) Provincetown Yes, you can drive, but with Cape traffic, the journey can easily take twice as long as it should, and nobody deserves to start off a P-town trip in a sour mood. The ferry is the way to go: It's scenic, serves drinks, and the journey takes about ninety minutes. There are two available from Boston: Bay Stay Cruises from the World Trade Center in the Seaport, and City Cruises from Long Wharf next to the New England Aquarium (and if you're early for the ferry and have an hour or so to kill, the Aquarium is totally worthwhile). If you don't mind spending a little more—sometimes three or four times the cost of the ferry—the fastest way is to fly. Cape Air offers regular service in the summer months from Logan International Airport and Westchester County Airport in New York. Provincetown Art Association and Museum (pictured) is an ideal place to familiarize yourself with Provincetown's truly robust arts scene. Provincetown Office of Tourism The best things to do in Provincetown First things first: Climb the Pilgrim Monument. The largest all-granite structure in the United States, this 252-foot tower stands in the center of town. The climb up can be a bit strenuous, but at the top you'll enjoy truly breathtaking views. On a clear day, it really contextualizes just how remote Provincetown is, here at the far end of Cape Cod. The beach, too, is a huge draw here. Rent some bikes from Provincetown Bike Rentals or The Bike Shack then head north to the Province Lands Bike Trail, which winds its way through sand dunes, cranberry bogs, and coastal forests. You'll ultimately end up on the northern edge of the peninsula at Race Point Beach, which truly feels like the ends of the earth. Not a biker? Uber is also available, but if you're traveling without a car, bikes make the journey quicker, as cellphone reception at Race Point can be limited. Another popular option (that's more easily accessed on foot) is Herring Cove Beach. And if you're craving a long walk, head towards Long Point Beach. But you'll want to be careful because it's accessed via a three-mile hike along the stone dike at the end of Commercial Street, and can get pretty hairy if high tide is rolling in.

Potential cuts spark conversation on Essential Air Service
L.M. Clayton Airport (City of Wolf Point photo) Federal spending cuts could be coming to rural airports across the country, with a national program utilized by seven Montana airports facing a $300 million downturn. In early May, Russell Vought, Director of the United States Office of Management and Budget, sent a letter detailing federal cuts the executive branch wants to make in the fiscal year 2026 budget. The letter included cutting $308 million from the Essential Air Service, or EAS, a program that directs federal money to air carriers operating in rural environments. 'The EAS program funnels taxpayer dollars to airlines to subsidize half-empty flights from airports that are within easy commuting distance from each other, while also failing to effectively provide assistance to most rural air travelers,' the document reads. It is unclear what impact any cuts would have on Montana, but the proposal would effectively halve the program's budget. Montana has seven airports that receive money through EAS — Butte, West Yellowstone, Glasgow, Glendive, Havre, Sidney and Wolf Point. Five of those — Glasgow, Glendive, Havre, Sidney and Wolf Point — are run through Cape Air and the federal funding subsidizes direct flights to Billings. Montana has a group dedicated to EAS, helmed by Walt McNutt, the state's EAS Task Force Chairman. Along with working with elected officials, the task force is also part of the contract process with airlines like Cape Air, which inked a four-year contract with the five airports doing Billings runs in 2023. The four-year deal with those five airports totals about $75 million. McNutt has seen attempted cuts to the service before, which haven't always come to fruition. 'I could have had a heart attack probably 10 times in 30 years over it if I let myself,' McNutt said to the Daily Montanan. 'There's going to be a lot of dialogue, a lot of information. You know, unfortunately, you probably had a Senator or a Representative get on an EAS flight that was half full and go berserk. 'When they do the final analysis of it, really looking at the facts and the boardings in the service, a lot of minds get changed pretty quickly.' The four members of Montana's Congressional Delegation did not return a request for comment. All four of Montana's delegations are Republican. McNutt, Dawson Airport Manager Craig Hostetler and Sidney Airport Manager Ryan Huotari all pointed to one of the main benefits of the program, connecting people with larger cities that don't have a lot of options to get there. It's a problem public transportation advocates pointed to repeatedly during the 2025 Legislative session. 'We're kind of an older community, and a lot of med flights,' Hostetler said. 'People are using it to get to Billings in order to take care of the medicals and such. A lot of people use it for connecting flights, because Billings is a small hub and we can get on the bigger airlines there. So it gets used by a variety of different people.' According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Montana had 2.87 million 'enplanements,' an aviation term meaning a passenger boarding a plane, in 2023. About 2.5 million of those boardings came from airports in Bozeman, Missoula, Kalispell, and Billings. Bozeman led the way with 1.2 million. Butte and West Yellowstone received about $2.5 million combined through the EAS program in 2023 for SkyWest to operate flights to Denver and Salt Lake City out of both airports. West Yellowstone had 8,750 passengers in 2023, an increase of 19.11% more than the previous year. Butte had slightly more than 16,000 passengers in 2023. Sidney had 8,000 boardings — a 22% increase more than 2022 — with Wolf Point, Havre and Glasgow each having around 3,000 boardings. Glendive had 2,177 boardings in 2023. 'It's vital,' McNutt said. 'We don't have an interstate, we don't have a bus, we don't have a train, we don't have anything in eastern Montana except the airlines.' DOT-OST-1997-2605-0293_attachment_1

Boutique Air continuing as Massena's Essential Air Service provider
Apr. 1—MASSENA — Boutique Air will continue to fly the skies around Massena International Airport. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced Monday that it had selected Boutique Air to continue serving as the town of Massena's Essential Air Service provider for the next three years, running from April 1, 2025, through March 31, 2028. Boutique Air will provide 21 weekly round trips between Massena and Boston Logan International Airport and will receive a subsidy of $5,756,644 in year one, $6,044,477 in year two, and $6,225,811 in year three, the amount they had proposed in their bid package. Their previous annual subsidy rate was $5,322,161 for the first year and $5,535,047 for the second year of their contract. Boutique Air, Cape Air and Contour Airlines had submitted their proposals to the U.S. Department of Transportation. The proposals ranged from $6.5 million for one year to near $25 million over four years. Cape Air offered three proposals — option A of 21 weekly non-stop round trips to Boston, option B of 21 weekly non-stop round trips to Boston and seven weekly non-stop round trips to Albany, or option C of 21 weekly round trips to Boston with 14 non-stop and seven via Albany. Contour Air proposed 12 weekly round trips to Dulles or Philadelphia International Airport. They had proposed two- and four-year contracts. For Massena to Boston under a two-year contract, they were seeking a subsidy of $5,615,014 for year one and $5,923,840 for year two. Under a four-year contract, they were seeking $5,544,826 for year one, $5,849,792 for year two, $6,171,530 for year three, and $6,510,965 for year four. For option B, under a two-year contract, the were seeking $6,229,784 for year one and $6,572,422 for year two, Under a four-year contract, the were seeking $6,151,911 for year one, $6,490,267 for year two, $6,847,231 for year three, and $7,223,829 for year four. For option C, under a two year contract, they were seeking $5,146,259 for year one and $5,429,303 for year two. Under a four-year contract, they were seeking $5,081,931 for year one, $5,361,437 for year two, $5,656,316 for year three, and $5,967,413 for year four. Contour Airlines was seeking a one-year subsidy of $6,531,324.75. In their proposal, they said service was "contingent on the community waiving its right to scheduled air transportation or submission as Alternate Essential Air Service." Their proposal would have been operated as a public charter and, if selected, would need to be administered through the Alternate Essential Air Service program. After reviewing proposals from the three air carriers, the Massena Town Board endorsed Boutique Air in January. "After researching each carrier, listening to their presentations, asking them questions along with providing our expectations, we recommend Boutique Air for a three-year contract. Given their current working relationship with Massena, their timely response to our concerns, community involvement, their positive responsiveness to passengers, willingness to continue service here, as well as making some of our suggested improvements, we highly recommend Boutique Air," they said in their letter to the Department of Transportation. In addition, Department of Transportation officials said they received letters from numerous citizens expressing their support for Boutique Air's proposal, citing good reliability, pressurized aircraft, and excellent customer service. They agreed with the town board's recommendation, noting, "Boutique's proposal best aligns with the totality of the air carrier selection factors the Department is required to consider, and the Department finds its proposed service levels and subsidy request reasonable."
