Absolute Batman deserves to be DC's next live-action masterpiece: Here's why
Batman's spot in the DC Universe has always been layered, but a recent villain redesign in the comics has reignited one very specific idea: this story needs a live-action adaptation, as per Screen Rant. Though few fans of the Caped Crusader may find many versions of a hero puzzling, comics have always embraced different interpretations. Absolute Batman reimagines the Dark Knight's origin story(Instagram/batman) For instance, three avatars of Spider-Man were introduced between 2002 and 2016, and each had a unique spin. With the DCU now embracing multiverse storytelling through both James Gunn's reboot and the Elseworlds banner, the time feels right. Also Read: How Fantastic Four: First Steps gives Marvel's 'first family' a second chance DC set to embrace dual Dark Knights DC is charting a bold new path by continuing two separate Batman movie universes at once. As per Screen Rant, while the majority of movies and TV shows were scrapped to make way for a unified DCU, Matt Reeves' The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, remains untouched under the Elseworlds label. At the same time, James Gunn is set to for a different Batman with Damian Wayne, in The Brave and the Bold. With these distinct timelines, DC is surely offering fans two very different takes on the Dark Knight. Why does Absolute Batman need to happen? DC Comics is no stranger to reinventing its heroes, but the DC Absolute Universe has taken that idea to the next level. In this reimagined world, Batman is not the orphaned billionaire we have always known. He is grounded, raw, and even his foes feel startlingly fresh. Take Killer Croc, for example: once Bruce Wayne's close friend and sparring partner, Waylon Jones becomes something far darker after being abducted and mutated at Arkham, this universe's even more terrifying take on Arkham Asylum. Also read: After long wait Matt Reeves confirms finishing script for The Batman 2 starring Robert Pattinson Croc's transformation is pure nightmare fuel, hulking, deformed, with a stretched neck and jagged teeth embedded in unnatural places. This is not just shock value; it is visceral storytelling that dares to push known characters into unsettling territory. The Absolute Universe does not just remix the lore; it elevates it. If ever there was a Batman story made for live-action adaptation, this is the one. It is fresh, fierce, and unforgettable. Absolute Batman reinvents the Dark Knight Reportedly, Absolute Batman offers a bold reimagining of the Dark Knight. While past adaptations have leaned into either camp or grit, this version reshapes Bruce Wayne's origin and places him in a hauntingly different Gotham. He is still a fighter, still driven, but molded by entirely new circumstances. It is a version that could exist alongside others, yet feels truly original, daring, and worth exploring on the big screen. FAQs Who is the new Batman actor in 2027? In 2026, Robert Pattinson will return as Batman in The Batman Part II, directed by Matt Reeves. Why is Batman 2 delayed to 2027? The Batman – Part II has been delayed to 2027, as the script is still being finalized. Is The Batman movie on Netflix? No, The Batman movie is not on Netflix.

San Diego Comic-Con's ‘Aztec Batman' Trailer Explores Mythos, Culture, and Justice In a New Light
During San Diego Comic-Con, HBO Max finally showcased its upcoming DC Studios animated Batman movie, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The film, also known as Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, offers a new take on the Caped Crusader's storied mythos. According to HBO Max Latin America's press release, its story will center on 'a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl, whose father, village leader Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death.' Aztec Batman was first announced in 2022 in celebration of the DC hero's 83rd anniversary. The animated series is being created in collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico's Anima, and Book of Life producer Chatrone. While the animated project has a lot of hands involved, it's being helmed by a familiar hand in Juan Meza-León, storyboard artist of the Harley Quinn Animated Series fame. Meza-León will co-write and direct the film. A new legend rises. AZTEC BATMAN: CLASH OF THE EMPIRES is coming to Digital 9/19. — Warner Bros. Entertainment (@WBHomeEnt) July 25, 2025Aztec Batman will serve as the second international reimagining of the Dark Knight, presented through a different cultural lens. The other of which is 2018's animated film, Batman Ninja. While Batman Ninja and its 2025 sequel, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, set the Caped Crusader in a modern-day setting, isekai adventures notwithstanding, Aztec Batman presents its version of the DC hero steeped in the period piece, where colonialism is intertwined with his vigilanteism while maintaining Batman's essence. In an interview with Anime News Network, Meza-León elaborated on how their version of Batman, despite coming from a wealthy family, will face challenges from the class system that would have influenced a young boy in Aztec culture. 'He goes through tragedy at the hands of the conquistadors. So that's where you get the loss of the parents and also the loss of his village. That motivates him and pushes him into a journey that, unbeknownst to him, is being led by the deities that guide him into becoming the bat warrior,' Meza-León told Anime News Network. 'We try to be as faithful as we can to the essence of the characters, whether it's Batman, Joker, or Two-Face. They're completely new characters with different origins, but you can still see the spirit of their comic counterparts.' Aside from the obvious cultural and historical influences, Aztec Batman producer García de Letona told Anime News Network that the movie was inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and a bunch of comic books. DC fans will no doubt have to keep their eyes peeled to spot easter eggs from. Aztec Batman is slated to release digitally on September 19. Want more io9 news? Completely free streamer boasts one of Britain's 'best sci-fi shows ever'
Looking for something 'super' to watch? We've got you covered (Picture: Channel Four) Do you like free stuff? Do you like great sci-fi stories? If you answered 'yes' to either of those questions, then you're in the right place. For the low, low price of absolutely nothing, you can access hundreds of incredible dramas, comedies, and documentaries using the free streaming service Kanopy. So what's the catch? Well, you do need a library card if you want to sign up, but as Arthur taught a generation of kids, 'having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card.' In all seriousness, Kanopy boasts hundreds of critically acclaimed shows, including Inside No 9, Happy Valley, and The Thick of It. Curtis (Nathan Stewart), Alisha (Antonia Thomas), Nathan (Robert Sheehan) Kelly (Lauren Socha) and Simon (Iwan Rheon) were the show's first group. (Credits: Tony Buckingham/Channel 4) They were later replaced by Alex, Rudy, Finn, Abby and Jess. (Picture: Hal Shinnie) When I was perusing the site, however, it was a certain sci-fi show that caught my eye. No, it wasn't Doctor Who (for once), it was the Channel 4 show Misfits. This sensational superhero series was released in 2009 and ran for five series. The show focused on a group of young offenders who, while performing community service, were caught in a strange thunderstorm. After the storm had passed, however, the group learned that they'd all received incredible superpowers. 'SAVE ME, BARRY!!' (Credits: Channel 4) So did they use them for good? Nah. The Misfits were all power and no responsibility, regularly using their abilities for personal gain and profit. Misfits was a huge hit for Channel 4 back in the day, earning itself an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and a place on a lot of 'best sci-fi series' lists. More than that, it's built a legion of dedicated fans around the globe. Don't believe me? Just take a quick scroll across the Google reviews and you'll see plenty of five-star reviews written by people like Jenna Breski. 'This is a brilliant show! It's very edgy with a few gruesome bits, but it's also very, very funny,' she wrote. 'I have laughed several times through each episode, especially Nathan's character, he's a freaking hoot. Give it a try.' Raymond Mead perhaps put it best, however, when he described it as a 'near-perfect British superpower series'. So what are you waiting for? A superpower granting storm? DC boss James Gunn says Wonder Woman has always been a "priority" and they have "good writers" working on the movie, but "they have to not be somebody who's gonna take two years to write a script"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has provided an update on the DCU's upcoming Wonder Woman movie, but it seems like there's still a way to go until it makes its way to our screens. "I don't know what they mean by fast-tracking," Gunn told Rolling Stone when asked about recent reports that the movie was being fast-tracked after Superman's critical and commercial success. "I've always had Wonder Woman as a priority. But we got the first few things started, and there's some other things that are really close to green-lighting – like there's a television show that I hope that we're gonna be green-lighting in the next few days. "So now a little time has passed, and we really need Wonder Woman and we really need Batman, because they're so important to us. And so it's become a little bit more like going to everybody at DC and being like, we need to figure this out. We have good writers on Wonder Woman and we just have to make sure it's working and they have to not be somebody who's gonna take two years to write a script." Last month, news broke that a new Wonder Woman movie was in the works. Gal Gadot, who played Diana Prince in the DCEU, will not reprise the role, but no one else has been cast just yet. Superman kicked off the theatrical arm of the DCU Chapter One earlier this month with David Corenswet playing the Man of Steel. Gunn has previously said that DC's main trio of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman will eventually re-team in the DCU, but not just yet (and the Caped Crusader has yet to be recast either). Superman is out now in theaters. For more on the movie, check out our Superman review or our spoiler-heavy guide to the Superman ending explained. Solve the daily Crossword
