Pirates of the Caribbean producer teases Johnny Depp's RETURN to franchise despite Disney fallout

Captain Jack Sparrow might not have sailed his last voyage. According to longtime Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp could once again reprise career-making role, if the right script comes along. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly. 'It's all about what's on the page, as we all know… We are still working on a screenplay. We want to make it. We just got to get the right screenplay. We haven't quite gotten there yet, but we're close.' Daily Mail has reached out to Depp's representatives for comment, but they have not yet responded. Depp, 62, led five Pirates films between 2003 and 2017, all of which grossed more than $650 million globally, with Dead Man's Chest (2006) and On Stranger Tides (2011) each crossing the $1 billion mark. Together, the franchise has pulled in $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office — much of that with Depp front and center. His future with the Disney-backed series had been uncertain following his highly publicized legal troubles, including his 2022 libel trial against Amber Heard. Previously, the entertainment conglomerate chose to distance itself from the actor, but never formally cut ties with the father-of-two. At the time, millions of his fans signed online petitions demanding the star be reinstated in his role as Sparrow. But with Depp now mounting a major comeback in Lionsgate's upcoming Day Drinker, rumors over his return to the high seas has only grown. His last studio film was 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The path to another Pirates installment has been winding and long. Back in 2020, Variety reported that Disney was developing two separate projects: a reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film continuing the original storyline, written by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott. Elliott famously co-wrote the first four Pirates adventures. Robbie later told Vanity Fair in 2022 that Disney was 'not interested' in her 'more of a female-led' version, but Bruckheimer pushed back on that narrative. At the time, he told EW there's still room for both. 'I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too,' he said. That same year, he continued to insist that the project was very much 'alive' to The Hollywood Reporter. Although the female-led spinoff is unclear, it does not currently have a release date and no details about casting or production plans have been released.

Do We Have to Bring Johnny Depp Back to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean', Actually?

Back in 2003, when Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl first hit theaters, it was a pleasant surprise. A movie based on a Disney ride—in a time when pirate movies weren't exactly riding high—it was highly entertaining, made a zillion dollars, and earned Johnny Depp his first Oscar nomination. Four sequels of varying quality followed, but despite many rumblings since Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, Pirates has yet to relaunch. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is now saying there might be life left in the franchise with the now-controversial Depp back aboard—but is that something we should really be encouraging? Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer said Depp is open to a Captain Jack Sparrow return. That's significant since Disney jettisoned the star in 2018 amid his legal drama with former wife Amber Heard; as EW notes, Depp said in court in 2022 that he would not be reprising the role because 'there was a deep and distinct sense of feeling betrayed by the people that I've worked hard for.' However, now there's seemingly been a shift. 'If he likes the way the part's written, I think he would do it,' Bruckheimer told EW. 'It's all about what's on the page, as we all know.' Bruckheimer has previously described a potential sixth Pirates movie as a reboot. In 2022, amid discussions of Margot Robbie's on-again, off-again take on the franchise—which he still had hopes for at that time—he sounded less optimistic about Depp making any sort of Pirates return someday. However, he did say, 'The future has yet to be decided.' That future is apparently here now, and Bruckheimer, who is clearly aware that any time he talks about Pirates he makes headlines, is floating that possibility anew. But even if someone writes the best Pirates reboot script ever, topping even the seaworthy hijinks of The Curse of the Black Pearl, do we really need Depp and his character to be shoehorned into it? Captain Jack Sparrow had already overstayed his welcome even before Depp's personal troubles became headline fodder. Perhaps if there's no chance of getting a Pirates movie without him, we should consider letting the idea sink to the bottom of the ocean forever. Want more io9 news? Jerry Bruckheimer Reveals Disney's Panic Over Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN — GeekTyrant

Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean is cemented as a Disney fan-favorite character. He brought humor to the adventurous film franchise, and fans will only entertain the idea of another film with his character front and center. But he wasn't always the sure bet we know him as today. Franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently sat down with Deadline to talk about his most recent film, F1 , and he was asked about the first time he pitched the Jack Sparrow character to Disney executives. He explained: 'It was interesting, but oh my God, what are we going to do here? That part was written for a Burt Lancaster. It wasn't written with the humor. I said, 'How are we going to get this past Disney?' And then we had meetings with them, and he had all these gold teeth he wanted to put in. 'We finally convinced Johnny to take some of the gold teeth out, but they really didn't know what he was going to do. And when the dailies came in, they said, 'Oh my God, we got to switch actors. This is not going to work. Is he gay? Is he drunk? What is going on here?' 'So what we did is, we cut a sequence together and showed him off and why it worked. Once they saw that, they kind of went along with the ride for us, with us.' It was a good gamble, obviously, and maybe we will see him back in the role one day.

Johnny Depp Makes Unexpected Appearance As Captain Jack Sparrow

brought joy, and a bit of pirate swagger, to children at Niño Jesús University Children's Hospital in Madrid on Monday, June 16, when he made a surprise visit dressed as his iconic "Pirates of the Caribbean" character, Captain Jack Sparrow. The 62-year-old actor, currently in Spain filming his upcoming movie "Day Drinker," slipped into full costume to meet with young patients in their hospital rooms. Photos from the visit show Johnny Depp in full pirate regalia, laughing with children and sharing sweet pinky touches in a heartwarming display that delighted fans and hospital staff alike. "From Osakidetza, and especially from all the staff at the Donostia University Hospital, we would like to express our infinite gratitude to Johnny Depp for his time, support, and energy, as well as to @sansebastianfes for facilitating this visit," the translation reads. This isn't the first time Depp has stepped back into Sparrow's boots for a cause. Just last year, in September 2024, the "Sweeney Todd" star visited Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián, where he brought joy to children in the Pediatrics and Oncology ward while attending the San Sebastián Film Festival. Over the years, the Oscar-nominated actor has made similar surprise visits in cities across the globe, including Paris, London, Vancouver, Brisbane, and several U.S. cities. 'He took the time to really engage with them and make them smile and laugh,' Patti Smith, a hospital spokesperson, said to ABC News after a 2017 visit to the BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Plus, back in 2015, Johnny Depp and his "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" co-star Stephen Graham paid a memorable visit to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Fully decked out as their characters, Jack Sparrow and Scrum, the duo brought laughter and even a few gold coins to the young patients during the heartwarming surprise appearance. 'For me and my family, it was a fantastic time to meet up and speak with Johnny Depp and put a smile on everyone's faces, especially my daughter,' Kossy Halemai said to CBS News. 'She's recovering well, and to see her smiling. I was emotional and proud.' Nine years ago, during an appearance on "The Graham Norton Show," Depp opened up about why these visits hold such personal significance for him. 'I've spent time in Great Ormond Street [a London children's hospital] where I was the parent when my daughter was ill,' he shared, referencing his daughter 's battle with an E. Coli infection in 2007 that ultimately resulted in kidney failure. 'I've known darkness in my life, but that was the darkest period ever when I was doing Sweeney.' Depp added, 'I'd always kind of done these visits, but after that, the visits became more and more important because the kids' bliss, you know, they're so strong, they're so courageous, but the parents are the ones who are slowly dying. And to be able to bring a smile or a giggle to these people means everything in the world to me.' Depp originally brought Jack Sparrow to life in 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," starring alongside and . He would go on to portray the eccentric pirate in four additional films: "Dead Man's Chest" (2006), "At World's End" (2007), "On Stranger Tides" (2011), and "Dead Men Tell No Tales" (2017). During his highly publicized 2022 legal battle with ex-wife , Depp said he had no intention of returning to "Pirates," even quipping that he wouldn't do it 'for $300 million and a million alpacas,' citing feelings of betrayal after Disney cut ties with him amid abuse allegations. Despite the drama, fans and colleagues continue to campaign for his return. In May 2024, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly, 'If it was up to me, [Johnny] would be in it.' He added, 'He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page… That was his interpretation.' While Disney has not officially confirmed Depp's return to the franchise, a July 2023 report claimed there might still be a path back for the actor. Regardless of what the future holds for Jack Sparrow on the big screen, Depp's heartwarming hospital visits prove that his most enduring legacy may lie far beyond the high seas.

Johnny Depp visits kids at hospital in Spain… where ex-wife Amber Heard now lives

Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance as Captain Jack Sparrow at the Niño Jesús University Children's Hospital, in Madrid on Monday. While dressed as his beloved Pirates of the Caribbean character, the movie star, 62, surprised kids, adolescents and their families while touring the oncology area of the health center. His fans looked overjoyed as he visited their rooms while taking a break from filming his upcoming project, Day Drinker, alongside Penélope Cruz. In the film, directed by Marc Webb, Depp stars as a mysterious guest on a lavish yacht drawn into a criminal web spun by Cruz's character. Day Drinker is currently shooting in Spain, where Depp's ex-wife Amber Heard resides with her daughter Oonagh Paige, four, and newborn twins Agnes and Ocean, who were born in May 2025. The former couple had a highly publicized and messy divorce, following 15 months of marriage, which led to a series of legal battles, including defamation trials in both the UK and the US. It's not the first time Johnny has used his Disney character to spread joy. In September, he thrilled youngsters at the Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián as he got back in character to pay them a visit. In a statement by Osakidetza-Basque Health Service, they revealed the Hollywood legend brought joy to the hospital as he 'chatted, played and laughed with the children.' 'They have shared laughs and anecdotes, and he has helped them forget for a few minutes the difficulties they are going through at the moment,' they revealed. 'It was a gift that brought joy to patients, families, nursing professionals, doctors and all the staff who were working on the ward at the time.' During his visit, Johnny, who was pictured happily posing for pictures with the children and cradling the babies on the Pediatrics and Oncology ward, stayed in character the whole time so as not to ruin the illusion. Back in 2022, he also dressed up as Captain Sparrow to send a sweet message of support to a fan amid his battle with a terminal heart condition. The actor surprised YouTuber Kori with a video message and a phone call as Captain Jack Sparrow, telling him: 'I wish you the best of luck, I'm your number one fan Captain Kori, all my respect and love.' Kori has reportedly had two heart transplants and is in palliative care but wants to gain as many subscribers as possible while he can, which Johnny helped him with. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Johnny virtual visit the patients at Queensland Children's Hospital. 'It's been a couple of years since I've been there and I miss it and I wanted to say hello,' he said during the Juiced TV virtual visit. He continued: 'It's a wonderful facility. I'm with all of you and I send you all my love, all my irreverence and ignorance, because it's fun to be irreverent and ignorant. Thank you for sticking with me through all these very strange years.' 'These three beautiful young people I've spoken with this evening and having heard from people who sent videos in, like little Ula, is one of the finest and most beautiful experiences that I've ever experienced and that is because of all of your commitment to this project and to taking care of one another and to helping out when times are curious and confusing.' Johnny has always been a regular visitor to Great Ormond Street hospital in London, but the visits took on a new meaning in 2007 after his daughter Lily Rose, was treated there when she contracted e-coli poisoning, at the age of seven. It was said to be 'touch and go' for Lily Rose for a while after the illness - which is commonly caused by improperly cooked meat, unpasteurised milk or water contamination - resulted in temporary kidney failure. After her recovery, Johnny said on the Graham Norton Show: 'When my daughter was ill in Great Ormond Street, it was the darkest period of my life. I'd always done these visits but after that experience the visits became more and more important.
