Cardinals training camp: Zaven Collins getting some ILB looks
The Arizona Cardinals began their second week of training camp this week and early in the week, there was an interesting change. Those in attendance noticed that outside linebacker Zaven Collins was in a different position. He was lined up off the ball at inside linebacker with Mack Wilson. This, of course, would be a very interesting change, as he was drafted originally to play inside linebacker but moved to the edge when Jonathan Gannon became head coach. He also saw snaps at outside linebacker. This led to a question for head coach Jonathan Gannon on Tuesday — what is the plan with Collins? The plan, per Gannon, is to "play outside linebacker and utilize his versatility." So will we see him at both positions? Perhaps, but this isn't anything different than how he has been used over the last two years. Collins will tell you that he hasn't just been at the edge. He has lined up on inside on the defensive line, played off the ball and blitzed from the inside. It just happened to be that on those snaps, he was back where he started. The Cardinals' third-down package on defense, sometimes called their "Nascar" package because it deploys five or six linebackers with either one or no defensive tackle on the field. They all stand up at the line of scrimmage, makinig it difficult for the opposing quarterback to identify who is rushing, who is dropping and where the assignments on defense will be. So while it was surprising in practice to see him in an old spot, we shouldn't expect it much once the regular season begins. Cardinals training camp: Practice ends early as LB J.J. Russell suffers scary injury
The Arizona Cardinals' first practice of training camps with fans in the stadium was cut short after a scary moment. A pair of new defensive additions this offseason — rookie safety Kitan Crawford and fourth-year linebacker J.J. Russell — had a collision on a play that led to Russell having to be taken off the field on a board and carted to the locker room. It was serious enough that the entire team surrounded him on their knees and head coach Jonathan Gannon ended practice early. The Cardinals gave an update later in the afternoon about Russell, saying that he was taken to a local hospital for testing and observation. He was being evaluated for head and neck injuries. He was responsive on the field and was able to move his extremities. It appears that, albeit scary, things will be all right. The Cardinals will be back on the field Friday in front of fans at State Farm Stadium. Arizona Cardinals sign former UFL DL Kyon Barrs ahead of training camp
Barrs was one of five defensive linemen who tried out for the Cardinals on Friday. The Arizona Cardinals made a move to add a defensive lineman to the roster before players report to training camp on Tuesday. Per the NFL transaction report on Saturday, they signed defensive lineman Kyon Barrs. Barrs had a tryout on Friday. Per Cards Wire's Howard Balzer, he was one of five defensive linemen to try out. Barrs was a rookie free agent last year, who played his final college season for USC after four years with Arizona. He had a rookie camp tryout with the Tennessee Titans but was not signed. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks, was cut before the season, signed with the practice squad and was released Sept. 3. During the 2025 UFL season, he played all 10 games and had 24 total tackles and a sack. He is 6-foot-2 and 290 pounds. The move, not yet announced by the Cardinals, does not need a corresponding move, as they had a vacancy left unfilled after cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting was placed on the non-football injury reserve.
