Media day: QB Carlos Herrera of Van Nuys is grateful he discovered football
Players from six Valley League football schools came to Granada Hills Kennedy High on Monday for a media day, and you can say without any doubts that Van Nuys senior quarterback Carlos Herrera has been changed by his experiences. When he decided to try football for the first time as a freshman, he said he knew little about the sport such as putting on shoulder pads. By last season, he was the City Section Division III offensive player of the year after passing for 2,158 yards and 23 touchdowns and running for 807 yards and 12 touchdowns. "It never crossed my mind," he said of his football success. "It's changed my life physically and mentally. It helps me mentally. When I go into the real world, nothing will be as tough a challenge." Defending league champion Kennedy has the Montes cousins, quarterback Diego Montes and defensive lineman James Montes. Diego has a 4.6 grade point-average, made All-City and is known for his versatility. "Every time I try to sack him, he runs away," James said. Kennedy lineman Lazara Barajas has made big changes physically. Last season he weighed 298 pounds. Now he's 262 pounds after he stopped eating chips and used better cardio techniques to drop weight. First-year Reseda coach Ed Breceda, who graduated from the school in 2006 and was an assistant coach under former head coach Alonso Arreola, is going back even further, bringing back smash-mouth football from the days of coach Joel Schaeffer. He brought three running backs to the media day — Innis Marquez, Erick Figueroa and Jonathan Orantes. Many of Reseda's players are enrolled in the school's police magnet program. Orantes also is part of the school's cheer team. Canoga Park coach Lucius Mills has spent months trying to convince one of his school's top soccer players, Gabriel Trigueros Estrada, to join the football team. He finally arrived this summer and is showing promise as a senior safety with no football experience. Mills is hoping if Estrada has a good experience, other soccer players will follow in future years. San Fernando coach Charles Burnley played for the Tigers and is always reminding his players about their strong football tradition. San Fernando produced a Heisman Trophy winner, Charles White. The Tigers have been strengthened by two transfers from Heritage Christian, quarterback Julian Zarzo and running back Brandon Marshall. But the player to watch could be 6-foot-4, 290-pound junior tackle Paul Villegas. Only 16 years old and part Samoan, he's gaining physicality and adding strength. And what about his eating skills? "What didn't I eat," he said. San Fernando plays Sylmar at the Coliseum on Oct. 17. Brothers Rayleo and Elizeo Reyes are key players for Sylmar as defensive backs. Never doubt their toughness, for Rayleo is a 5-6, 150-pound senior and Elizeo is a 5-5, 149-pound junior. "We like to fly around and hit people," Rayleo said. Both can't wait to play at the Coliseum. "I've always been a USC fan," Elizeo said. "It's a dream come true." Panorama is excited about sophomore safety Brandon Hernandez, who ended up starting as a 14-year-old freshman last season. Asked how do you get someone so young ready to play on varsity, coach Adrian Beltran said, "You make them be best friends with the linemen. He hung out with them at lunch, after school." Family-friendly TSA lanes debut at several US airports: How do they work?
(KTLA) – Select airports across the country are adding special security lanes to help make travel easier for families. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced in July its new ' Families on the Fly ' program, which aims to 'put families first and enhance their airport security screening experience during the busy summer travel season and beyond,' according to the agency. When asked, a representative for the TSA told Nexstar that the family-friendly security lanes work basically the same as the regular lanes, while providing families 'with their own space where they can move through security at their own pace, without feeling rushed or as though they're inconveniencing other travelers.' As part of the program, the TSA is also offering a $15 discount on PreCheck enrollment when two adults sign up together. Kids under 12 are generally allowed the same benefits when traveling with an enrolled adult; kids under 17 may also be eligible if they meet certain conditions. There are also plans to implement dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for service members and their families, per TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Dedicated family lanes are already operational at Orlando International Airport (MCO) in Florida and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina, the TSA says. But Nexstar's KTLA reported that John Wayne Airport, in Orange County, Calif., debuted its lane in July. KTLA's Carlos Herrera visited John Wayne Airport on Tuesday to speak with families testing out the new lane. 'It's been very nice. Very short line,' one parent at the Southern California airport, just moments before she reached the front of the queue. In addition to the Orlando, Charlotte-Douglas and John Wayne facilities, dedicated family lanes are planned for the following airports, according to the TSA: Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL) Charleston International Airport (CHS) Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport (PVD) Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Puerto Rico (SJU) Tampa International Airport (TPA) 'This program goes beyond convenience; it's about addressing the unique needs of traveling families to provide a smoother, more supportive experience at our security checkpoints,' Pete Garcia, the TSA federal security director for Orlando, was quoted as saying in a press release. 'We're dedicated to making travel smart, secure, and family friendly.'

In addition to his two goals, Sheldon had a 70% passing accuracy rate and won eight duels. Oakland Roots currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference table with 14 points, but with only six points separating them from fifth-place Phoenix Rising FC, one win could shift the table dramatically. The defender joined Oakland this past May, having made seven appearances and scored one goal for Le Rouge. So far in Oakland, Doner has played in five matches, accumulating two goals and one assist. These two sides have faced off five times, going back to the NISA Fall Season in 2020. Detroit City has picked up three victories, with the other two ending in draws. The most significant match between these two sides occurred on October 2, 2020, in the NISA Fall Championship Game. After going down 1-0 in the first half, a goal from Shawn-Claud Lawson in the 65th minute and a Ryan Peterson goal in the 85th minute saw Detroit City claim the Fall Championship. Downtown L.A. curfew limits overnight unrest
A curfew instituted Tuesday night appears to have had an effect following days of anti-ICE protests that have led to vandalism, fires and looting in Downtown Los Angeles. 'Let's start with some encouraging news,' KTLA reporter Carlos Herrera said from the streets of Downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning. 'L.A. may have just experienced its quietest day this week.' There were no major acts of vandalism or reports of looting during the overnight hours after a fifth day of protests challenging the Trump administration's aggressive crackdown on illegal immigrants. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass announced on Tuesday that the curfew would be in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday, promising swift action would be taken against those who violated it. 'Law enforcement will arrest individuals who break the curfew, and you will be prosecuted. Hundreds of officers from police and sheriff departments from across the region and state are working alongside the LAPD through a unified command structure,' Bass said. Police started citing and arresting protesters who refused to leave immediately after the curfew went into effect for a roughly one-square-mile portion of Downtown Los Angeles. About two dozen people were arrested overnight on suspicion of violating the curfew, police said. Shortly before the curfew took effect, local faith leaders and demonstrators gathered for a prayer vigil at Grand Park before marching toward the Federal Building. 'We need to be peaceful, because otherwise the message is lost,' said Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles Rev. Canon Patricia O'Reilly. 'The message becomes one of violence. No, we don't want that. This is a peaceful demonstration today … We are saying that we are behind and with the immigrants in our city.' While most of the crowd honored the 8 p.m. curfew by dispersing, a crowd of about 150 people remained, prompting officers at one point to fire rubber bullets. More demonstrations are expected to take place on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Overnight looting follows 4th day of anti-ICE protests in Downtown L.A.; Bass blames raids
Several high-end businesses were among the many looted and vandalized overnight following a fourth day of protests over immigration raids in Downtown Los Angeles. KTLA's Carlos Herrera was outside the Apple Tower Theatre on West 8th Street and Broadway Tuesday morning as cleanup was underway following the overnight break-in and looting of the Apple store. 'No ICE' was spray-painted on the damaged glass windows in front of the store. Inside, broken glass was seen on the ground next to several items. Looters reportedly stole multiple iPhones, Apple Watches, laptops and chargers. Video showed officers taking two suspects into custody around midnight. Multiple jewelry stores were also hit overnight. A large mob was seen outside businesses on 6th Street and Broadway. Display boxes were left on the sidewalk, although it remains unclear exactly what was taken from the stores. One shop owner said he witnessed at least four attempted lootings in Los Angeles' Jewelry District. Meanwhile, a few blocks away on West 8th and Main Street, police were seen taking down a suspect believed to be involved in the looting of Shoe Palace. Several other suspects managed to run from the scene. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is blaming the unrest on the Trump administration's ramping up of ICE raids last week. 'I will just take you back to last Thursday. Last Thursday, there was nothing happening in this town that called for the raids that took place on Friday. Nothing was happening. Nothing warranted the raids,' Bass said. The mayor is also asking why the targets of the immigration raids have apparently changed. 'If you remember, at the beginning of this administration, we were told that raids would be to look for violent criminals, people who had warrants,' Bass said. 'But I don't know how you go from a drug dealer to a Home Depot. To people's workplaces, where they're just trying to make a living.' The city of Los Angeles has declared a tactical alert in an attempt to restore order. The crowds had dispersed as of Tuesday morning, but it was unclear if more protests were planned for later in the day. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
