Middletown mailman bit by pit bull days after USPS launched dog bite awareness campaign

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — A United States Postal Worker is recovering after a dog bit him multiple times on Monday afternoon. The incident happened at around 4:15 p.m. on Barbara Road. Mailman bit multiple times by pit bull in Middletown Witnesses to the incident said the 5-year-old pit bull forced his way out of the screen door and chased the mailman down. The mailman suffered multiple dog bites including his left thigh, left wrist, right forearm, lower abdomen and the back of his head. This incident happened just days after the United States Postal Service (USPS) launched its National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign, with a theme of 'Secure Your Dog, Keep Deliveries on Track.' The campaign was designed to remind residents to keep their dogs secured and away from the mail carrier. Some community members told News 8 that they believe the incident could've been prevented. 'I really feel bad that this has happened to him and it is all in how you bring your animals up,' Carol Perruccio, a Middlefield resident, said. 'I mean I know pit bulls are known to be aggressive, but I think it is all in the way you raise them and teach them.' USPS stated that there were more than 6,000 reported dog attacks on postal service employees last year. The incident is still being investigated by the city's animal control.
