Key takeaways from Texas A&M's Saturday scrimmage video
Texas A&M's Saturday scrimmage was closed off to the media, which is basic protocol during every preseason. However, thanks to the Aggies' media team, who released a 41-second clip from the scrimmage, several star players were not included in the video, while one of the program's 2025 freshman running backs received more snaps. In aggreement with GigEm247 beat writer Carter Karels, the main observations were much of the same relating to what we've seen in practice over the last week, as starting quarterback Marcel Reed completed passes to Terry Bussey and Mario Craver, while senior running back Le'Veon Moss was not on the field throughout the clip, which could have been a precautionary measure. Freshman running back Jamarion Morrow, who has continued to impress the staff this preseason, was seen for several seconds as the primary back, as his elite quickness and versatility could push him up the depth chart. Still, either way, this proves just how deep the running back room is to allow the top options more rest. For context, coach Mike Elko stated back in early June during his appearance at the Dallas A&M Club that while Moss is 100% healthy, he will not take any live contact snaps until the beginning of the season. 'We are not going to let him get hit until we play games anyway, so that's not really a big deal.' Defensively, as Karels notes, Marcus Ratcliffe and Bryce Anderson took the field as the starting safety rotation, which isn't a surprise, knowing that Ratcliffe has been one of the camp stars. At the same time, Anderson needs to improve as a tackler, especially in coverage, going into his final collegiate season. Junior defensive tackle DJ Hicks running with the first team wasn't a given. Still, the expectation is that he would be paired with senior Albert Regis, and Iowa State transfer Tyler Odyedim would be the 2025 defensive line rotation. Lastly, on the offensive line, Elko stated last week that he and O-line coach Adam Cushing were experimenting with the center position, as left tackle Trey Zuhn even took staff in the middle of the line. In the clip, senior Koli Faaiu is taking the first-team reps, but early reports also indicate that redshirt sophomore Mark Nabou looks like his old self and might be too good to keep off the field this season. Texas A&M will resume practice on Monday, August 11. Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions. Texas A&M to big leagues: 11 Aggies set to participate in MLB Draft Combine
Texas A&M to big leagues: 11 Aggies set to participate in MLB Draft Combine The Texas A&M baseball program will have five players and six signees from the 2025 class participate in the MLB Draft Combine this week. According to a report from GigEm247 reporter Carter Karels, left-handed pitchers Justin Lamkin, Myles Patton and Sgane Sdao, along with shortstop Kaeden Kent and center fielder Jace LaViolette, are the five Aggies who are set to compete at the combine, which kicks off Tuesday at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. Three of those athletes are ranked in the top 200 draft prospects by with LaViolette now projected to be selected by the Milwaukee Brewers at the No. 20 spot in this year's draft. He capped off his collegiate career in his junior season with the Aggies this year with gutsy performances, such as playing through the SEC Tournament with a broken hand. The Katy, Texas, native slashed .285/.432/.651 during his time in College Station. Also included in the top 200 prospects rankings are two players from the 2025 class. Left-hander Johnny Slawinski (63rd) and outfielder Josiah Hartshorn (106th) round out Texas A&M baseball's prospects on the list. Joining Slawinski and Hartshorn from this year's recruiting class to enter the MLB Draft Combine are shortstops Nicholas Partida, Boston Kellner, and Matthew Boughton, along with outfielder Blaine Bullard. Every Texas A&M baseball player intending on participating in the combine is eligible to return to the program, depending on how they perform and where their draft stock trends over the coming days. There is no sugarcoating how the 2025 campaign ended for the Aggies was well below expectations set at the beginning of the year. Heading into this year's campaign, the club was ranked as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country during the preseason, which quickly faded as the program finished the season unranked and missed competing in the postseason for the first time since 2021. That mark left a sour taste in the mouths of Aggie fans across the country, as many continue to hope for head coach Michael Earley to turn things around in 2026. However, let's not get too ahead of ourselves here. The Aggies' skipper has done a tremendous job in the transfer portal, bringing in multiple top-rated portal prospects like former Florida Atlantic outfielder Jake Duer and pitcher MJ Bollinger. Earley's club also learned on Tuesday that outfielder Caden Sorrell will return for his junior season for the Aggies this year, which provides a major spark and depth to the Texas A&M outfield. The production lost to the MLB Draft is nothing to breeze over. Leaders like LaViolette and Kent, along with the 2025 signees, are huge hits to a program clamoring to make it back to the College World Series after reaching the championship game against Tennessee in 2024. Time will tell just how many players the program will lose to this year's MLB Draft, but it all depends on how they perform starting on Tuesday when the 2025 MLB Draft Combine commences. Aggie fans react to Texas A&M's 86-84 home loss to Vanderbilt on Wednesday night
The Texas A&M basketball team dropped its third consecutive game, and the same issues came back to haunt them in front of a dwindling crowd at Reed Arena. A&M has never been considered a basketball school, and the attendance at games has always been inconsistent. However, the fans have shown up in droves for most of the season. Lately, the numbers have dropped, and there are many factors, but the most glaring is the product on the floor as of late. The grit and will are still there mostly, but the adjustments are lacking. It's yet another game where the Aggies allowed the opponent to put on their best Steph Curry impersonation, hitting 10 of 24 three-point attempts in clutch moments. On the other side, A&M was 7-22 and only shot 37% from the field in general. This recurring theme makes it hard for any fan to watch a team play ISO on offense, ending with an ill-advised shot for a miss, followed by the opposing team hitting a three-point shot in transition. Rinse and repeat. But the hallmark of a Buzz Williams team is their relentless effort, and it showed up against Vanderbilt. It just happened a little too late, resulting in a two-point loss. Texas A&M continues to see its NCAA Tournament seeding drop, and with the No. 3 Florida Gators up next, the future is looking bleak. Below are some of the best reactions from Aggie fans and the media after the loss on Wednesday. This team is going to enter the last game of the year on a 5 game losing streak unless something changesRidiculous — Tim England (@tengland_150) February 27, 2025 FINAL: Vanderbilt 86, No. 12 Texas A&M the dramatic ending, but A&M falls short of its miracle comeback attempt. The Aggies have now lost three straight games, and it won't get any easier with No. 3 Florida and No. 1 Auburn coming next. — Carter Karels (@CarterKarels) February 27, 2025 This last minute was so irritating. If we show even 50% of that effort for 40 mins we win this game by double digits. — Terrence Kiel Jr Fan Club (@AggieGhost) February 27, 2025 VANDERBILT!!!!!Commodores get their signature road win with the Quad 1A win @ Texas A&M! Vanderbilt is now 7-8 in the SEC and could *maybe* still get a bid by losing out through SECT, though I would certainly not recommend that. Vanderbilt will be a lock with any other regular… — JBR Bracketology (@JBRBracketology) February 27, 2025 This is that stretch where buzz loses games we shouldn't that gets us a worse seed than we really deserved — Garrett Pelham (@garrett_p11) February 27, 2025 By my estimation, the final two minutes of Texas A&M vs. Vanderbilt took a little over 35 minutes in real life. In addition to a couple reviews, both teams attempted 28 free throws combined during that span. — Carter Karels (@CarterKarels) February 27, 2025 A wasted opportunity to get back in the win column against Vandy at home.A&M now 10-for-44 from three in their last two games…22.7%Defense allowed Lanier and Nickel to torch them from 3. 15 makes between those two, and 23 total for Tenn and 3 seed unlikely now. — Luke Evangelist (@lukeevangelist_) February 27, 2025 What is it with A&M coaches and their refusal to adjust their offenses? — Mark Passwaters (@mbpRivals) February 27, 2025 Put up a - Aggies 84, Commodores 86#GigEm — Texas A&M Basketball (@aggiembk) February 27, 2025 Texas A&M will face No. 3 Florida on the road on Saturday, March 1. The time has changed to 7:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on the SEC Network.
