The film stars Robert De Niro in the dual roles of Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two rival New York mobsters. The film follows their lives from their friendship at New York's Alto Knights social club through an attempted assassination of Costello and the Apalachin meeting of 1957. Barry Levinson directed from a script by Nicholas Pileggi, the writer of Goodfellas and Casino and the books upon which those films were based. Debra Messing plays Costello's wife, Bobbie. In an interview with UPI, Messing said Bobbie was trying to get Costello to retire. The couple moved to Long Island at her urging. Pileggi and producer Irwin Winkler also spoke with UPI about how Costello and Genovese represented "the end of the mob." The film also stars Cosmo Jarvis, Kathrine Narducci, Michael Rispoli and Wallace Langham. BEN HARVEY: Why Rio Tinto's next boss should be Simon Trott
Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm is leaving the company he joined five years ago. The suddenness of the announcement (usually these things are 'socialised' weeks or months in advance) has tongues wagging about whether it was his call to go or the Rio board Jerry Maguired him. The job of running the world's second-biggest mining company in 2025 is very different to what it was when Jakob became the big kahuna. If you had chanced upon his to-do list on the first day at work you would have seen one line and one line only: FIX JUUKAN CLUSTERF..K Dealing with the fallout from the Juukan Gorge disaster — which saw Rio destroy ancient Aboriginal shelters in an ill-advised blasting program — took longer than expected because, well, there was a lot of fallout. There were more parliamentary inquiries and more independent investigations than you could poke a stick at. Rio wanted to bleach that event from history and so got rid of anyone who was within a long distance phone call of the crime. As Joe Pesci's character in Casino observed, it's always better without witnesses. Jakob was a good choice to lead the company in the wake of Juukan. An affable Dane with an almost hippy way about him, he was at the opposite end of the personality spectrum to the bloke he replaced — the foppish and effortlessly punchable Frenchman Jean-Sebastien Jacques. Rio recovered from Juukan and things were going swimmingly courtesy of a post-COVID iron ore price so buoyant that Elmo could have run a mining company and not mess things up. Jakob soon had the board reaching for the Mylanta courtesy of two very big calls. The first was signing off on Rio's $10 billion investment in the giant Simandou iron ore mine in Guinea. This is a country whose rulers arbitrarily cancelled 50 mining licences in one month yet Jakob reckoned presented no undue sovereign risk because he counts the Guinean Government and China as joint venture partners. Sceptical? So am I. Rio's now in a devil's threesome with whatever military junta ends up running Guinea in five years and Xi Jinping, who could decide to take over the whole thing just because he can. Jakob raised Rio's risk profile further by taking a $20 billion punt on lithium — a commodity eschewed by other tier-one miners and whose value has been in the toilet ever since the world realised electric cars are actually a bit of a pain in the arse. Rio directors obviously signed off on those big decisions, so it's unlikely Jakob is getting heat from the board because of those calls. The word among analysts who follow Rio is Jakob was being put under the pump by chairman Dominic Barton. The Canadian wanted the Dane to get a handle on operations — which is code for cutting costs — because BHP had quietly become the cheapest producer in the Pilbara. Dominic knows a lot about cutting costs because he spent a large chunk of his working life at McKinsey and Co. That's the management consultancy which in the late 1990s changed Disneyland from being the happiest place on earth to a death zone, courtesy of a recommendation that it 'rationalise' maintenance. And he knows a lot about making money, having led McKinsey when the firm helped the manufacturer of OxyContin devise new and innovative ways to get the United States hooked on hillbilly heroin. Analysts have Rio's chief commercial officer Bold Baatar as one the internal front runners for the top job. Other internal candidates include Sinead Kaufman, who oversees the broadly termed 'minerals' division and copper chief executive Katie Jackson. There are a lot of external candidates but if Rio looks outside the tent it'll be competing with BHP for talent because the Big Australian is rumoured to be hunting for a new chief executive to succeed Mike Henry. Rio's head of iron ore, Simon Trott, should get the gig. Here's why. Rio talks about how it's a transnational miner with interests around the world. Its global headquarters are in London's ever-so posh St James Square and its Australian headquarters are in Melbourne's ever-so conservative Collins Street. But boil this business down and you'll find it's a dirty and dusty old West Australian iron ore company. Four dollars in every five that Rio makes in profit comes out of the Pilbara. Take West Australian iron ore out of Rio and the company wouldn't make the ASX's top 20. I suspect if you crunched the numbers hard it probably wouldn't be in the top 100, rather languishing as a penny dreadful being punted by spivs in West Perth. It makes sense that a West Australian iron ore company (and that's what Rio is) should be run by a West Australian iron ore executive who lives in the same time zone as his business's most important customer, China. Let's see whether Rio has the guts to appoint yet another white, middle-aged male to the top job.

Casino, Goulburn previews: Colt Prosser eyeing a feature double
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Wauchope trainer Colt Prosser has spent the best part of last week cleaning up after the devastating floods on the Mid-North Coast. Now, he will be hoping for a clean sweep of Casino's two big annual features. Wauchope is an hour's drive from Taree and while that essentially makes the two towns neighbours, Taree was more or less ground zero for the big weather event. 'It was not too bad, just a lot of flooded stables,' Prosser said. 'Safety-wise we were all good. The town coped a lot and went under and everyone was isolated. 'It was a big weekend on the tools and the wheelbarrow and shovels but we'll be okay, a lot of people did it a lot worse than us.' Prosser's Beef Week Cup participant, Cenotes, will tackle the $45,000 1400m feature first-up having last been seen on October 11 when down the order in the Port Macquarie Cup. This will be only his second 'Cup' but certainly not the last, according to Prosser. 'Cenotes is going to be in for a nice campaign,' the trainer said. 'He is going to be in all the Country Cups around the corner. 'He is first-up and he's just been ineffective at anything under a mile so if he can run good race, I'll be happy. 'I expect him just to improve with a run under his belt.' Cenotes will be ridden by Country Championship Final winning jockey Ben Looker who boasts a favourable record on the son of Rebel Dane of three wins and a second from six rides. Looker was also Prosser's choice for Bjorn Ironside who will square off with stablemate, Dis Is Heaven, in the Casino Flying over 1000m. Bjorn Ironside's current personal best was his close and closing third in this season's MNC Championship Qualifier over 1200m but his one and only 1000m test was hard to forget, even for Prosser. 'He's only had one go at 1000m and he smashed them,' the trainer said. 'This is up in grade and he hasn't had a run since he went to Brisbane but I brought him home and he's freshened-up good.' Dis is Heaven, meanwhile, will be taking a step back in class when he steps out in the Casino co-feature. That's because his last run was at the midweeks where he finished third in the 1000m Benchmark 72, $60,000 affair. 'He's going great and he doesn't mind a soft track,' said Prosser. 'I just would have liked to draw a little bit better at Casino with him but he can be a run-on horse so if they happened to be put a bit on pressure on, he can relax and finish off. 'I was really disappointed I couldn't go back to Sydney with last week when we were flooded in, I couldn't get there. 'He hasn't had too many dramas. He's nice and fit and he's going well.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Former jockey, now Hawkesbury-based trainer Blake Ryan is hoping the well-bred two-year-old Nothing But Net can pull of a slam dunk on debut at Goulburn Nothing But Net was one of 138 foals to emerge from the first crop of ATC Sires' Produce and Champagne Stakes winner, King's Legacy. His grandam is Georgette Silk whose single win came on debut in the 2020 ATC Widden Stakes. 'He has always shown me a little bit,' Ryan said. 'He was in our Ready 2 Run draft and he breezed up the quickest of the lot but was passed in. 'He went online and when the client sold him, Matthew (Sandblom) bought him and gave him back to me to train. 'He seems to be a horse that a 1000m isn't going to be his go. He is bred to be a 1400m horse so he is going to improve.' Nothing But Net won't be alone on the trip to Goulburn. He'll be accompanied by another blue blood, namely Asuriito, who lines-up in the Pat Murphy Racing Class 2 Handicap (1000m). A son of Brazen Beau, Asuriito, went to the Sapphire Coast on May 4 armed with an impressive record of two wins and a third from five starts. And while costly in defeat for his many supporters, he left Bega with excuses. 'That track was very, very heavy and gluey,' Ryan said. 'On paper its says it was a Soft 7 but the grass was very long and it was very boggy. That, coupled with the weight, made it hard for him. 'He is an honest little campaigner. He had a tough run at Canberra before that but he keeps bouncing out of it, I'll give him that much. 'I would have liked to have a little bit better but only that dog-leg corner there at Goulburn from the 1000m, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle for him.' Granted, Ryan's immediate focus is on Goulburn but once he's done there, he will be in countdown mode to Saturday's Midway Handicap at Rosehill where he is represented by the always reliable Lady Extreme. 'I'm really happy with her. 'I think she is going as well as she has ever gone,' Ryan said. 'And a heavy track wouldn't bother me. She's a duck.'

GOULBURN BEST BET Race 8 No. 3: ORTHIE'S BOYS Runner-up here at only visit and has recent solid provincial form. NEXT BEST Race 7 No. 3: BOMBELLEISTIC Excelled in a very strong Class 1 at Scone on Cup Day. VALUE BET Race 4 No. 6: ROUGE HOMME Lightly-raced. natural/raw talent, in good hands here at the track. QUADDIE Race 5: 1, 5, 8, 11 Race 6: 2, 3, 4 Race 7: 2, 3 Race 8: 3 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW JAY FORD has ridden 133 of his 1,408 career winners at Goulburn. Jay Ford can add to his solid record at Goulburn. Picture: Bradley Photos CASINO BEST BET Race 3 No. 9: MERAPI Could not be better placed at her second run for an astute new yard. NEXT BEST Race 2 No. 4: HOMELAND Placed four from 10. Reliable and drawn well this time. VALUE BET Race 6 No. 10: LOVE RAT Big run first-up in a much superior Benchmark 58 to what this is. INSIDE MAIL - GOULBURN RACE 5: GOULBURN POST MAIDEN HANDICAP 1500m SHE REX (1) is trained by Ciaron Maher who also trains her very close relation, Pride Of Jenni. She Rex might end up being a good investment on her $240,000 Inglis Classic Sale outlay in 2023. So far, she has placed at five of her six starts; she has been terribly costly, but in much better races than this. Zero excuses. HIDDEN MOGUL (11) doesn't know how to run a bad race. She could potentially make this favourite earn the win. Bet: She Rex to win, exacta 1 to beat 11 RACE 6: ABERNETHY GORE SOLICITORS COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1500m LETHAL LADY (2) was so unlucky it wasn't fair at Wagga during the carnival. Fast forward to her last start and she was third at the Sapphire Coast when coming from a long way back as usual. That's not easy to do there. Easier here though. Luke Pepper is flying himself but he's also got HELL OF A FOX (3) on a hat-trick. In fact, she should be going for four straight since she got down to Canberra. Bet: Lethal Lady to win, quinella 2, 3, Daily Double 1st leg 2, 2nd leg 3 RACE 7: HIBERNIAN HOTEL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1600m BOMBELLEISTIC (3) is the fourth foal of his dam; all of her foals are housed by Team Joseph/Jones who bred the lot of them. As this for one, he has a win and two seconds from eight starts but you could argue that nothing he has done has contained as much merit as his fifth in very strong Class 1 at Scone on Cup Day. CHEBICI (2) is on a hat-trick. Easy to like with the good alley and Coriah Keatings doing the right thing by her all the time. Bet: Bombelleistic to win, box trifecta 2, 3, 5, 9 RACE 8: CAMPBELL PETROLEUM DISTRIBUTORS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1200m ORTHIE'S BOYS (3) has been with Richard Collett for the last three of his five career starts. Those were; a barnstorming second here, another 'from last' fourth at Gosford then a fading on-pace fifth at Kembla. Maybe he didn't see out the 1400m but we're back to 1200m in weaker grade today. For what it is worth, I think COUGARS (1) is a pretty handy horse and sure, they've all got to carry big weights here, but he's got the biggest and 62kg is a big number. Bet: Orthie's Boy to win INSIDE MAIL - CASINO RACE 6: BACK TO THE ROYAL COUNTRY BOOSTED BENCHMARK 58 SHOWCASE HANDICAP 1200m LOVE RAT (10) is a get back and run on type, perhaps better suited at Grafton but here we are at Casino. The son of Love Conquers All has a troubling second-up record but if you can overlook that and the wide draw, he is in this with as a good a chance as any and better than most. AYE AYE SKIPPER (1) is in fabulous form, and has been for a while too, but this is as bad a draw as the horse has been dealt in all that time. Bet: Love Rat each-way RACE 7: CASINO FOOD CO-OP CASINO FLYING 1000m DIS IS HEAVEN (5) is '3213' heading into the Casino Flying. They were all good quality affairs too, but none were any harder than his May 7 assignment at Warwick Farm when and where Colt Prosser's gelding was an honourable third. Stablemate and MNC Championships Qualifier placegetter BJORN IRONSIDE (4) has raced once at 1000m; that was the day he carried 62kg at Taree when he won by two lengths. Bet: Dis Is Heaven to win, quinella 4, 5, box trifecta 1, 3, 4, 5, DD 1st Leg 5, 2nd Leg 5 RACE 8: CASINO RSM CLUB BEEF WEEK CUP 1400m SECRET PLAN (1) is a Queenslander, via Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. The Bob Peters-bred galloper has been with Tony and Maddysen Sears for the last three runs, the most recent of them was a third at Eagle Farm. On-pace type with a manageable weight now after Jett Newman's claim. COLLAY'S SPIRIT (4) could very well tally up his 10th career win, third-up. Note that Luke Rolls is one win and two placings on the horse. The best CENOTES (6) is better than a lot of these. Bet: Secret Plan to win RACE 9: WAL'S CONCRETING CLASS 3 SHOWCASE HANDICAP 1400m MONTE MAXIMUS (5) probably deserves a bit more credit for his last handful of runs than would normally be afforded to a horse with a '7295' lead in. All in all, 1400m is in the right range for the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained son of Invader and he gets a little bit of weight off on what he has been carrying lately. Former Godolphin galloper STYLISED (1) is ready to produce now that he is out to 1400m. The more scratchings the better in view of that wide alley. Bet: Monte Maximus each-way
