Stephen Mulhern's heartbreaking reason for crying for the first time on TV in The Accidental Tourist
Stephen Mulhern cried in his first TV show following the death of his dad Christopher. Viewers will see a more emotional side to the 48-year-old presenter in the upcoming ITV1 and ITVX travelogue one-off show, 'The Accidental Tourist', which was filmed just after Christopher passed away last year. The special, which will air at some point in 2025, sees Stephen's 'Saturday Night Takeaway' friends, Ant McPartlin, 49, and Declan Donnelly, 49, whisk him away to South Korea to discover the country and push himself out of his comfort zone to eat food he does not like with strangers. Stephen told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "No one's ever seen me cry on the telly. "But it was quite nice to not be behind a format, I've never done that. You're going to see behind the razzle-dazzle if you like. People have thankfully seen me on TV for nearly 25 years, but they may go, 'Well, what's he like at home? Is he going out with someone?' "I'm at the very centre of this, and it's scary. "They film and they film and they film and they just get everything. I think what you're going to see is a lot of emotion. You'll see me totally out of my comfort zone.' The 'Catchphrase' host loved has pride in himself for starring in 'The Accidental Tourist' - which reportedly took Stephen three years to be persuaded to do - but he is "gutted" that his father was not alive to see how he got on in the Asian country. An emotional Stephen admitted: "My dad had just passed away, so that's the only thing. I'm gutted that he didn't see it." The 'You Bet!' presenter was hesitant to do the series, which has been compared to the hit Sky travelogue programme, 'An Idiot Abroad', that saw comedians Ricky Gervais, 63, and Stephen Merchant, 50, make their actor friend Karl Pilkington, 52, trot around the globe doing silly things. And because Stephen is "not very worldly" - due to only having holidays in Florida, USA - and his body is only "used to eating plain foods", Ant and Dec thought he would be the perfect person for the show. Stephen said: "The difference is that I got very emotional because of the timing. "I'm not very worldly. I don't travel a lot. And my body's been used to eating plain food." The 'In for a Penny' host said the food he ate in South Korea was "horrific" and when Stephen returned home, he "couldn't eat" for a fortnight - resulting in him shedding "half a stone". He added: "The food was just horrific, we'd try things like octopus, fish penis, something they dug out the very bottom of the sea and like a worm that's wriggling, but when you squeeze it squirts water. "When I came back I couldn't eat for two and a half weeks. I literally couldn't stomach anything - I lost half a stone."

Stephen Mulhern reveals surprising reason he won't miss co-host Holly Willoughby after she quit You Bet & DOI was axed
Stephen's currently on air with Celebrity Catchphrase - where he's now overtaken show legend Roy walker MAN OF HIS WORDS Stephen Mulhern reveals surprising reason he won't miss co-host Holly Willoughby after she quit You Bet & DOI was axed Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) STEPHEN MULHERN wants to kick off a new era of his career, ditching his 'Mr Beige' tag to become the new Bruce Forsyth. But Stephen remains busier than ever with Celebrity Catchphrase and three new shows in the works. Chatting to TV Biz, he said: 'I'm gutted she's not doing You Bet! with me, but I've had time to think about it and Bruce Forsyth was the first person to do You Bet! and he did it on his own. 'Matthew Kelly made it the best show on the telly. 'And every time I've been interviewed and they say, 'What show would you bring back?' I've always said 'You Bet!' 'So maybe it happened for a reason. We've filmed one episode already without Holly, and it felt very comfortable. Maybe it is just a one-presenter show.' 'I cried a lot' Stephen has become an ITV stalwart through his work with Holly, Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly. But now he is forging his own path. So much so that, chatting to my reporter Felicity on the Catchphrase set, the former magician revealed he has an idea for a show — and is coughing up his own cash to pay for it. Stephen said: 'It's very hard to pitch stuff on paper, you've got to show people so I'm just going to invest my own money into it then pitch it. Michelle Visage, Melanie Blatt and Seann Walsh are some of the celebs appearing on the current run, which continues this Sunday at 6.55pm on ITV and STV. And Stephen has now filmed more episodes than show legend Roy Walker. He said: 'I used to watch Catchphrase growing up. I love it because of the gameplay of it. You can never call it. 'The secret to success now is proper family entertainment. 'If you can't sum up the show in a sentence, it will never work. Play Your Cards Right, higher or lower. Amos reached the final round Credit: ITV 4 The comedian faced a tricky catchphrase for the jackpot Credit: ITV Viewers watched as Stephen K. Amos tackled the show's Super Catchphrase. The comedian worked his way up a pyramid to play for the show's top prize. Stephen answered the first few with ease - but wasn't quite as lucky on the £50k catchphrase. It appeared to be someone who was running alongside a clock or watch. Although Stephen's guesses included "time travel" and "running with time", he failed to find the correct answer. Despite the setback, he still won £25,000 for his charity as well as helping increase the amount won by his competitors. Host Stephen Mulhern said afterwards: "Well I tell you what, there's a turn up for the books. "Honestly, that was fantastic. That was amazing play." To which Stephen K. Amos replied: "Thank you. I'm glad we could help my friends as well." It was at this point that the elusive £50k answer was finally revealed. Rob Brydon appears on a celebrity edition of Catchphrase Stephen Mulhern admitted: "I thought you were going to say it at one point. It's running like clockwork." He continued: "Think of that no longer, because you are taking away the £4,900 that you won earlier on. "Now, that £25,000, taking your total prize money for your charity to £29,900." Stephen K. Amos triumphed over Corrie legend Beverley Callard and presenter Kirsty Gallacher in the earlier rounds. His efforts in the Super Catchphrase meant he also doubled their winnings, so Beverley now received £3,800 for her charity. Meanwhile, Kirsty's doubled amount went up to £6,800 for her cause. The episode originally aired in 2022 - although ITV2 viewers have now seen the outcome play out again. Earlier this year, it was revealed Celebrity Catchphrase had been renewed for an 11th series - before series 10 even aired. ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said: "We're delighted to announce a further series of the much loved family favourite, Celebrity Catchphrase. Stephen Mulhern's career so far The presenter is a mainstay on various ITV shows, but how did he become one of Britain's most well-known faces? Stephen first gained an interest in magic and tricks from his father who taught him as a kid. After performing at Butlins, he became the youngest member of the Magic Circle and even made an appearance on Blue Peter in a piece about Harry Houdini. His career started in Children's TV when he presenter the show Finger Tips in 2001. After four years, he launched Tricky TV on CITV in 2005, which he presented until 2010. During this time, he was handpicked by bosses to front the ITV2 spin-off for Britain's Got Talent. He presented Britain's Got More Talent until the cancelation of the companion in 2019. But it's not all bad news for Stephen who is known for his duties on a number of quiz shows. In for a Penny, a format originally launched on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway was launched the same year. Before, he was chosen by bosses to host Catchphrase in 2013 and has been fronting the show ever since. Other huge shows he presented for ITV included Big Star's Little Star, Rolling In It and the reboot of Deal Or No Deal. He also made regular appearances on This Morning in 'The Hub' segment between 2011 and 2014. After the Philip Schofield scandal rocked ITV, he was chosen to reunite with his former CITV co-star Holly Willoughby as the host of Dancing on Ice. "The only show where you say what you see, the hugely popular series continues to win legions of fans and with Stephen's infectious and playful humour it's a firm favourite with our viewers." Gary Chippington, Executive Producer and Creative Director of STV Studios Entertainment, added: "It's testament to Catchphrase's fantastic format and universal appeal that it's still one of the UK's most-loved entertainment shows, four decades after ITV first commissioned it. "The incomparable Stephen Mulhern is a huge part of the show's success, and we're looking forward to getting back in the studio with him and a great line-up of stars later this year for what promises to be another brilliant series of Celebrity Catchphrase." Celebrity Catchphrase airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
