It cascaded gracefully down the iconic red carpeted Cannes stairs. Overall, the ensemble exuded high fashion and glamour that was tailor made for a red-carpet moment. Cate Blanchett embraced minimalism in her red carpet ready outfit but delivered maximal impact through her elegance and confidence. Adding a touch of contrast to her monotone look was a pair of gold earrings. My mum was told 'pressure' was an ear infection - it wasn't
Cate Jackson, 60, was initially told her headaches, fatigue and trouble balancing were due to an ear infection called labyrinthitis - but it was something far more sinister Former professional swimmer Cate Jackson's balance issues were initially dismissed as labyrinthitis, an ear infection, after she experienced headaches and fatigue. When antibiotics failed to make a difference, a revealing MRI scan in March 2023 diagnosed a meningioma brain tumour. The 60-year-old retired athlete underwent surgery to remove the tumour, followed by radiotherapy treatments. She continues to undergo regular scans to monitor her condition. Inspired by her mother's struggle, Cate's daughter Isobel Manna, a 26-year-old mental health support worker, ran 83.7km to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research. Isobel, from Welwyn, Hertfordshire, shared her concern: "Mum became drained of energy and said how it felt like she needed someone to drill into the side of her head to alleviate the pressure she felt. I studied the brain during my psychology degree at university and thought something more sinister could be to blame. Despite mum not wanting to make a fuss, I encouraged her to go back to the GP and my fears were realised." Cate, who competed internationally for Great Britain from 1981 to 1985 and currently represents Barnet Copthall Masters swimming team, first began noticing symptoms three years ago. It wasn't until the recent scan that her brain tumour was identified. Today, thanks to her treatment, Cate leads a normal life, albeit under careful medical watch. Isobel has lauded her mum's resilience in coping with cognitive issues after being diagnosed with a brain tumour, adding: "Mum has some trouble with her cognitive processing, but is living life as normal. Mum's brain tumour could be treated, but I know for some people this isn't the case. Brain Tumour Research is a cause I want to support so that more potential life-saving research can be carried out to keep families together." After surpassing her £1,000 fundraising target for Brain Tumour Research, Isobel tackled the challenging terrain of the Jurassic Coast on May 17, 2025, and although not completing the planned 100km, she said: "It was fantastic, but very different to running in the streets. I had planned to do the 100km distance, but had to withdraw before as I lost body heat and couldn't warm up and would've been too dangerous to continue. I'm so proud of myself for how far I ran, especially with the steep hills and drop." Charlie Allsebrook, community development manager for Brain Tumour Research, said: "We're incredibly grateful to Isobel for sharing her mum's story and for taking on such a strenuous trekking challenge." He emphasised the indiscriminate nature of brain tumours, acknowledging their impact and appreciating Isobel's role in raising awareness and support for those affected by declaring, "Cate's story is a stark reminder that brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age and around 12,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour each year. We're grateful to Isobel for helping us shine a light on this devastating disease and supporting the brain tumour community."

Johnson City small business owners start to feel impact of tariffs
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — After the Trump administration rolled out tariffs on other countries, businesses in the Tri-Cities are left wondering how that will affect them and their customers. Two Johnson City business owners–one a flower shop and the other a gaming business–both said they are seeing some effects from tariffs, and they're doing what they can to keep the doors open and customers happy. May is a busy time of year for William Cate. He co-owns Anna Marie's Florist in Johnson City with Brandon Roberts. 'This is the Olympics for us,' Cate said. 'But we always say Mother's Day is the Olympics because it lines up with the start of spring graduations, proms, and then Mother's Day, just to top it all off.' During their busiest time of year, Cate said he's starting to see tariffs affect some items he uses. 'Wrapping paper, twine is just an accouterment that we use in our floral arranging,' Cate said. 'Those were the first increases that we saw.' Cate says he's doing all he can to avoid passing price hikes onto customers. 'They (the tariffs) have been significant,' he said. 'The real central mission of our business is to provide service and value to the people of Johnson City.' Johnson City Chamber Director of Marketing Cooper Reaves said the chamber has distributed a survey on behalf of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to gauge the impact the tariffs have had so far. In downtown Johnson City, Retro Mansion owner Jerry Miller said tariffs have forced him to raise prices on accessories and gaming systems, with Nintendo and Xbox systems costing nearly $100 more. 'Our biggest downfall is, some people think it's your fault because you're raising the prices they're buying. But you have to explain to people, most people understand,' Miller said. Both Cate and Miller stress the importance of buying local. 'You make good connections with people, and you can trust it,' Miller said. 'Everything's online, but you don't know what you're getting till you see it in person. A lot of times, there's issues and stuff, so it's good to have someone in person to make that connection.' 'We're there when they [community] have their first kid, we're there when they have their first date, we're there for the proposal, we're there for the wedding,' Cate said. 'So we were just a part of their lives, and we're so happy to be able to provide them that service.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Cate Blanchett, 55, stuns in a green three-piece suit as she leads stars at National Theatre after announcing plans to retire from acting
Cate Blanchett turned heads as she led the stars at the National Theatre 2025 Season Launch in London on Tuesday evening. The Oscar-winning actress, 55, who recently declared that she is to retire from acting, looked incredible in a satin green three-piece suit. The stunning ensemble featured tailored trousers, a longline blazer, and a plunging waistcoat. She teamed the stylish look with a pair of classic white trainers and pulled her golden locks into a low up-do. Earlier in the evening, the star appeared in high spirits as she was spotted arriving at the event before posing up a storm on the red carpet. Also at the event were the likes of Fay Ripley, Fiona Shaw, Olivia Williams, Stephen Mangan, Mark Gatiss and Rosalie Craig. It comes after Cate revealed her plans to retire from acting after treading the boards for over three decades. Earlier this month, the star hesitated about her job title during an interview with Radio Times, explaining: 'It's because I'm giving up [acting]. My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting.' Cate insisted she had 'a lot of things I want to do with my life' other than appearing on screen. The Australian star, who recently starred in an adaptation of Chekov's The Seagull at London's Barbican, did not give a timeframe on her departure from the entertainment industry. But it is not the first time that she has threatened to quit her career despite her international acclaim. She told Vanity Fair in 2023 that she has often toyed with the idea of walking away from her acting work. She said: 'It's not occasional — it's continual. On a daily or weekly basis, for sure. 'It's a love affair, isn't it? So you do fall in and out of love with it, and you have to be seduced back into it.' Also at the event was Fay Ripley (left), Fiona Shaw (right), Olivia Williams, Stephen Mangan , Mark Gatiss and Rosalie Craig. Mark Gatiss and Rosalie Craig were all smiles together at the event as the embraced each other on the red carpet Despite her latest declaration, the Lord of the Rings star is set to feature in her first radio play on Radio 4 on Saturday in a 90-minute monologue titled The Fever. Written by Wallace Shawn, Blanchett will play an unnamed traveller who falls ill in a foreign country riven by civil war. The mother-of-four explained why she had chosen to embark on her first audio radio project. She told the Radio Times: 'I'm obsessed with the psychological space that is the interior of people's cars. 'Often the most profound and intense and memorable conversations that I have with my children are in the car.' 'That special space was where my 16-year-old encountered Desert Island Discs and now he's completely obsessed with it, and, because the school run is quite long, it's where I listen to long-form radio drama.' Cate has racked up thousands of rave reviews over the last 30 years after working tirelessly across dozens of projects in theatre, film and TV. Cate revealed her big plans in the April 19-25 issue of Radio Times A regular on the global awards circuit, Blanchett has received major prizes from all over the world, including two Oscars, three BAFTAs, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, an Order of Australia, and in France a Chevalier, for her contribution to the arts. Born in Melbourne, Cate started her movie career in Australia but quickly made an international breakthrough in 1998 with one of her first films, the historical drama Elizabeth. By the early 2000s, global audiences knew her from the blockbuster Lord of the Rings series. She later appeared in the Hobbit trilogy. She won great praise and a best supporting Oscar for playing Hollywood great Kate Hepburn in Martin Scorsese's Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator in 2005. In 2013, she won her first best actress Academy Award in the Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine.

Cate Blanchett splashes her millions on snazzy eco mansion in 'Hollywood-on-Sea'
With an estimated net worth of $95million (£71.4m), it's not surprising that Cate Blanchett has splashed the cash on a super snazzy eco home. The Australian actress is best known for her roles in films such as Carol, Tár, Ocean's 8, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, having received two Oscars, four Baftas, and four Golden Globes for her work over the years. But when she's not performing on stage or screen, the 55-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of the best talents of her generation, likes to relax by the sea. Although it might surprise you to learn that by 'sea,' we don't mean an Australian bay, but instead… Cornwall. Cate has had a spectacular new abode built in Mawgan Porth, which has been dubbed 'Hollywood-on-Sea' due to the rich and famous residents it attracts. The likes of David Beckham, Kate Winslet, Stanley Tucci, and Jason Statham have all been spotted on the beach there, so it clearly came highly recommended to Cate and her family. New photos show the stunning property in all its glory, having transformed the area of the Cornish coastal village. Cate's mansion is part of a stretch of properties along the seafront, sitting beside other multi-million-pound developments from A-listers and business moguls. Its build comes after Cornish locals initially feared being priced out of the area by the developments. The designs of the new houses are certainly futuristic, boasting solar panels on the roof and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the idyllic view. Cate's specifically boasts five bedrooms, and it's reported she was the first celeb to buy a home in the village in 2020 before purchasing a £1.25million plot of land directly above the following year. This comes after she was granted planning permission to knock down her £1.6million cottage she bought with husband Andrew Upton. And it seems Cate might be spending even more time in her sprawling mansion, having recently said she wishes to 'retire' from acting. The movie star has a string of films still to come, but admitted to Radio Times that she feels uncertain about branding herself an 'actress' now. More Trending 'It's because I'm giving up,' she declared. She added: 'My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting … [There are] a lot of things I want to do with my life.' Cate's first role was in 1992 in the David Mamet play Oleanna for the Sydney Theatre Company. She recently finished working on a new Jim Jarmusch-directed movie called Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, which is slated for release this year. Got a story?
