Springs ballerinas set for SA International Ballet finals in Cape Town
Five talented ballerinas from the Sandra Gibson Ballet Academy are set to take centre stage at the prestigious South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) in Cape Town from 29 to 31 July at Artscape Theatre. Larise Dippenaar (11), Oratile Mpitso (12), Naledi Ndobe (13), Manapo Tshoma (15) and Tshenolo Tshoma (16) took part in the qualifying round held in March at Steyn City, where they all qualified for the finals. This will be the 12th annual SAIBC, an event featuring more than 120 entries from across the world, with dancers aged nine to 22 competing in classical ballet and contemporary categories including solos, duets, trios and group performances. Larise's mother, Venessa Dippenaar, said the girls are very excited and feel privileged to have the opportunity to take part in such a prestigious competition. 'After the big announcement that they had qualified for the international competition, they were overwhelmed with big smiles and tears of relief and joy, each supported by their parents. We all had a good cry and celebrated with huge applause,' she said. She added that the girls have been preparing for the competition by training four times a week. 'The community can keep these relentless, fearless ballerinas in their thoughts and prayers,' Dippenaar said. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Dilapidated Umhlali station needs urgent repair
Umhlali police station is calling on the community and local businesses to assist in maintaining and repairing its ageing infrastructure. Officers say that while they remain committed to serving the community with diligence, a lack of resources has made upkeep increasingly difficult. 'It is a reality that we need assistance with the upkeep and repair of parts of the station,' said station captain PJ Bisschoff. 'We are fortunate to have already received help from the business sector, including the provision of new toilet facilities and grass cutting.' Despite these welcomed contributions, more needs to be done. Bisschoff highlighted that the most pressing concerns include repairs to the designated firearms officer's office, which has a large hole in the floor and a leaking roof. The detective offices also suffer from persistent roof leaks. The state of the facilities continues to affect the experience of community members visiting the station. Ballito resident Dieter Zettler, who recently visited the station to report a crime, expressed concern about the condition of the charge office. 'How anyone can expect proper police work to be done in this very limited space, housing, at that moment, four detectives and staff, and with no shelving to keep paperwork in order, is incomprehensible,' said Zettler. ' Never mind the front door, which lacks a handle and cannot be locked.' Local businesses and community members are encouraged to contact the station to find out how they can help. Water crisis deepens as alleged saboteurs target Ndwedwe water project [Watch]
Hope for clean water in Ndwedwe has been dealt a severe blow after key infrastructure was torched in a suspected act of sabotage. The R68-million Umshwathi Bulk Water Scheme, originally scheduled for completion in September, suffered a serious setback after 29 bulk water pipes were allegedly set alight last Friday at the Mthombeni Bus Stop site in Ward 8. This left more than 20 homes without electricity, as the electrical infrastructure was also damaged in the area. The infrastructure project intends to supply clean water to Ndwedwe Wards 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 These are rural areas with little to no infrastructure. Residents are at the mercy of unreliable water tankers, while others fetch water from rivers and boreholes. Through this project, 25 000 people from about 3 000 households have been promised piped water connections to their homes. iLembe district mayor Thobani Shandu condemned the incident, calling it 'an attack on the dignity and rights of Ndwedwe residents.' 'This was not just vandalism, it was a direct attack on people who have waited years for basic services. We will not be intimidated or derailed. Our commitment to delivering this vital service remains firm,' said Shandu. An initial site inspection indicated the fire was unlikely to have started naturally. While the results of a formal forensic investigation are pending, authorities suspect deliberate sabotage. Authorities noted that there had been no previous disputes or community opposition to the project. A criminal case has been opened at Nsuze Police Station and investigations are underway. The destruction of the pipes means delays are now inevitable, as materials will need to be reordered and project timelines adjusted. The full cost of the damage is yet to be assessed. Mayor Shandu appealed to the public for information. 'We urge anyone with knowledge of the perpetrators to come forward. This act has hurt the entire community.' At the time of publication, no arrests had been made. Stay in the loop with The North Coast Courier on Facebook, X, Instagram & YouTube for the latest news. Ekurhuleni assures residents of safe water quality during Rand Water maintenance
The city has reassured residents that water quality will not be compromised during the scheduled Rand Water maintenance. This assurance comes as the city maintains its certification of clean and safe water supply, confirmed by the National Department of Water and Sanitation's Blue Drop Report of 2023. Rand Water, the city's bulk water supplier, is undertaking critical infrastructure repairs starting at 05:00 tomorrow, July 15, and concluding at 07:00 on July 18. ALSO READ: Water supply interruption in Ekurhuleni from July 15 due to Rand Water work The maintenance will temporarily disrupt the water supply to several areas across the metro, including Kempton Park, Germiston, Thembisa, Edenvale, and Bedfordview. In response, the city will dispatch water tankers to affected areas as a relief measure. To ensure that residents continue to receive the same high-quality water, Ekurhuleni's water quality section will collect and test water samples from each tanker before distribution. This process safeguards the integrity of the water supply, even during periods of disruption. The city has encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour involving the water tankers, including the illegal sale of water, which is strictly prohibited. Any concerns related to water quality should be reported immediately to the City of Ekurhuleni's call centre at 0860 543 000. 'The safety and health of our residents remain our top priority,' said the city in a statement. ALSO READ: Water supply interruption in Ekurhuleni from July 15 due to Rand Water work 'Maintaining our Blue Drop standard – whether through piped supply or water tankers – is non-negotiable.' Residents can expect updates through the city's official communication platforms throughout the maintenance period. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention.
