Cellphones stolen at Bok game: Gauteng duo to appear in Mpumalanga court
Cellphones stolen at Bok game: Gauteng duo to appear in Mpumalanga court An otherwise pleasant and well-organised rugby match left some supporters as the unfortunate victims of opportunistic theft. According to Lowvelder, Mpumalanga SAPS confirmed that two suspects were arrested at the stadium on Saturday and are expected to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court today. 'We can confirm that the two suspects were found at the stadium in possession of seven cellphones, believed to be stolen,' said provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli. 'The suspects both hail from Gauteng, and their arrest will be a lesson to others who believe Mpumalanga is a playground for thieves and robbers,' he added. The suspects were charged with theft and unlawful possession of suspected stolen property. Following reports of theft at the fixture, Lowvelder asked readers on its Facebook page about their experience. Several said their cellphones were stolen during the match. Mdhluli said detectives have identified the lawful owners of four of the recovered phones. The remaining devices are yet to be claimed. Police investigations are ongoing. Watch: 2 men, a tiny car, and 600km through the Kruger for a cause
Watch: 2 men, a tiny car, and 600km through the Kruger for a cause It's barely bigger than a ball of elephant dung – just over a metre wide – and with a squeeze and a shove, two skinny men can just about wedge themselves inside. Yet despite the obvious limitations, it might well be the smallest car ever to tour the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Samuel da Fonseca, owner of the social media enterprise, The Car Scene, and his good friend Reggie Takundwa took on the challenge in their bonsai-sized Bajaj, driving the length of the Kruger (Malelane to Pafuri). Their route was anything but smooth, sticking mostly to gravel roads and the sort of terrain that would make a 4×4 sweat. But this was more than just an eccentric road trip. The duo aimed to spotlight the urgent need to protect wildlife from poaching and to raise funds for anti-poaching efforts. 'We're doing this drive to make a difference,' Da Fonseca said. 'To raise awareness of the harsh reality our biodiversity is facing right now.' The journey took six days, and covered about 600km – all in a Bajaj Qute they bought for just R15 000. 'The challenge was simple: buy the smallest car we could find and make it Kruger-ready,' Da Fonseca explained. 'It took us 20 days to beef it up so it could take on the rough roads.' Among their most nerve-jangling moments? Elephants. 'The Bajaj weighs a measly 450kg – tiny compared to the five-ton giants roaming the park. Luckily, none of them were aggressive. They were curious, though,' he chuckled. 'A few times, we had to reverse as they ambled toward us, rumbling like they were asking, 'What on earth is this contraption?'' Along the way, they captured footage and conducted interviews, including conversations with passionate, battle-hardened rangers. 'It really hit us: these guys are in a constant fight against poachers. It's like a war zone.' The result of the journey will be a six-part series that will air on The Car Scene's YouTube channel. Da Fonseca says the next challenge – planned for next year – will raise funds to build a much-needed vulture enclosure at the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre near Hoedspruit. Sharp-eyed police officers recover stolen Fortuner before owner realises it's missing
A contractor visiting East Driefontein earlier this month had no idea his Toyota Fortuner had been stolen until police called to inform him they had already recovered it and arrested the suspects. Carletonville Herald reports the man had parked his SUV in the Masakhane Shaft parking area and gone inside, unaware that criminals had already made off with his vehicle. Fortunately, three vigilant members of the West Rand police's flying squad, based in Krugersdorp, were patrolling along the P111 road toward Westonaria when they spotted the Fortuner and found it suspicious, even though it hadn't yet been reported stolen. As officers tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects abandoned it and jumped into a second car. The police gave chase and managed to intercept and arrest all three men in the getaway car. Further investigation revealed that the second vehicle had also been reported stolen during a robbery in Florida earlier this year. Thanks to the sharp instincts and quick action of the flying squad, two stolen vehicles were recovered and three suspects are now behind bars. Two police constables shot dead in suspected love triangle in KZN
A suspected love triangle within the police ranks ended in tragedy on Thursday night when two Gamalakhe police constables were gunned down outside a home in Port Shepstone. The victims, a 34-year-old male officer and his girlfriend, were reportedly sitting in the man's car outside his house when the mother of his child, also a constable at the Port Shepstone police station, allegedly opened fire at them. Both victims later died at Murchison Hospital, The Witness reports. The incident happened in the Mbayimbayi location, Murchison, Ugu district. A police source said the man was taken to hospital with multiple gunshots while his girlfriend escaped the scene, but was later found nearby by a neighbour and was also taken to hospital where they both died. 'When the man's brother heard gunshots, he rushed out to check and saw his brother being shot at by the mother of his child, who is also a police constable stationed at Port Shepstone police station,' said a police source. 'The suspect was then traced and found in possession of her service pistol without the magazine.' Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrest of a constable in connection with the murders. 'Police in Port Shepstone have arrested a police Constable in connection with the murders of a fellow Constable who is believed to be the father of her child, and another Constable, suspected to be his girlfriend at Murchison location in Mbayimbayi area on Thursday night,' Netshiunda said. 'It is reported that the suspect went to a residence where she found her baby daddy with another woman and opened fire at both of them before leaving the scene of the crime. Both victims were declared dead upon arrival at hospital. The suspect was arrested on Friday and is expected to appear in court on Monday, 21 July 2025,' he said. [Video] Rare sighting: Last known elephant of Knysna forest spotted
A rare sighting of Oupoot, the last known elephant of the Knysna forest, has sparked excitement after a video showing the lone elephant roaming farmland in the Karatara region went viral on social media this week. The video, captured by local farmer, Oubaas Fourie on Thursday, July 17, shows the elephant calmly moving through his property – a rare event, given Oupoot's elusive nature and the declining visibility of forest elephants in the region over the past decades. In response, Phokela 'PK' Lebea, SANParks Regional Communications Manager, confirmed that they are aware of the video and is working to verify the sighting. 'We are in contact with our rangers in the area to confirm whether it is indeed Oupoot roaming in Karatara, which is highly likely,' said Lebea. 'SANParks is currently undertaking a comprehensive risk assessment process to guide any future decisions regarding the protection of the Knysna elephant. At this stage, the process is still ongoing.' Oupoot is believed to be the last surviving member of the once-thriving Knysna elephant population, which has dwindled over the years due to habitat loss, human encroachment and historical hunting. 'We remain committed to ensuring that any decision taken is informed by sound scientific, conservation, and stakeholder considerations. We will communicate publicly once the process is concluded,' Lebea added. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak.
