Health department shuts new Cedric the Entertainer barbecue joint. Will it reopen this weekend?

A new barbecue venture from comedians Anthony Anderson and Cedric the Entertainer is smothering honey-glazed pork ribs with gold sauce and piling smoked brisket onto potato buns with pickles and onions. Or at least it was for six days. AC Barbeque is located in a corner of the Westfield Century City mall's dining hall and held its grand opening May 7 but shut down on Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health ordered the celebrities' restaurant to close, citing a lack of permitting. AC Barbeque 'opened without approval or permit,' a representative for the county health department told The Times in an email. A representative for the restaurant told The Times that the city of Los Angeles had approved the restaurant before its opening date, but a county official who visited AC Barbeque during its opening week shut down the operation, noting that its permitting application was incomplete. The AC Barbeque team has since resubmitted the permitting paperwork and hopes to reopen by the end of this weekend. The new joint venture serves as the first bricks-and-mortar extension of longtime friends and barbecue enthusiasts' TV show 'Kings of BBQ.' The A&E series follows the pair as they visit pitmasters across the country and explore the history, flavors and cultural influence on and stemming from the cuisine. Comedy veteran Cedric the Entertainer — whose birth name is Cedric Antonio Kyles — has appeared in 'The Neighborhood,' the 'Original Kings of Comedy' tour and 'Barbershop,' among other shows and films, while Anderson's decades of credits include 'Blackish,' 'Law & Order' and 'We Are Family.' The duo hope to highlight Black culture in their new restaurant, as they do in their show, diving into the community's contributions to barbecue. In the future, they hope to host specials from and appearances by guest pitmasters in Century City. Last year, AC Barbeque debuted a 'virtual dining' outpost within the campus kitchen of Mississippi's Jackson State University, and earlier this year, the brand launched a food truck at Howard University in Washington, D.C. In their Century City restaurant, they're serving sandwiches stuffed with smoked chicken, brisket or pork; smoked-and-fried wings with barbecue ranch; a variety platter; half-racks of St. Louis-style pork ribs; brisket and pulled pork by the pound; banana pudding; sides such as cornbread, mac and cheese, brisket baked beans and more. Read more: Cedric the Entertainer uses his punchlines to branch out and give back To help bring their vision to life, they tapped local pitmaster Burt Bakman of Slab and Trudy's Underground Barbecue. 'Hats off to our chef [Burt Bakman], the driving force behind every smoky bite that comes out of our AC Barbeque kitchen,' the restaurant posted to Instagram last week. Before its temporary closure, AC Barbeque regularly sold out of items; a manager told The Times that even with their smokers firing 24 hours a day, it's still hard to keep up with the demand for the low-and-slow-cooked barbecue. Guests filing in for a taste passed under a sign that says 'Welcome to the cookout,' and TV screens displayed menu items as well as photos of Kyles and Anderson. Behind the counter, rows of the restaurateurs' house spice rubs and bottles of barbecue sauces are available for those who want to bring a taste home. AC Barbeque is located in the Westfield Century City's Dining Terrace, on the second level of the shopping center, at 10250 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles. The restaurant plans to reopen with daily hours of 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sign up for our Tasting Notes newsletter for restaurant reviews, Los Angeles food-related news and more. ‘The Masked Singer': Honey Pot revealed as comedian in Season 13 premiere

The Brief Season 13 of "The Masked Singer" premiered with Group A contestants, including Honey Pot, who was revealed as comedian Cedric the Entertainer. Cedric the Entertainer, known for roles in "Barbershop," "Madagascar," and "The Steve Harvey Show," was the first to be unmasked in the season's debut. Next week's episode will celebrate DreamWorks' 30th anniversary with "Shrek Night" featuring performances of iconic songs from the movie franchise. LOS ANGELES - On Wednesday's lucky Season 13 premiere of "The Masked Singer," a new batch of contestants entered the competition to battle it out, once again, for the coveted title and trophy. On the season's first episode, Group A (Ant, Honey Pot, Paparazzo, Fuzzy Peas and Coral) sang their hearts out. But, one contestant was forced to "take it off" and be revealed — and this time Honey Pot would be sent home. What we know The panelists were shocked on Wednesday evening when Honey Pot was revealed as Cedric the Entertainer – a stand-up comedian, actor and television host, known for being one of the original Kings of Comedy. "When she sees this, she's gonna be so excited," the 60-year-old comedian said of his granddaughter watching. "That's the thing I'm most excited about." Cedric the Entertainer is known for his roles in film and television series, including the "Barbershop" trilogy, the "Madagascar" trilogy, "The Steve Harvey Show" and "Ice Age." In 2019, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What's next Next week, "The Masked Singer" is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the animation studio DreamWorks with "Shrek Night." The panelists and host Nick Cannon will open the show with a rendition of "Rockstar" by Smashmouth – a song popularized in the movie "Shrek." Group A will perform again and channel their inner fairytale by performing songs from or inspired by the movie franchise, from "Accidentally In Love" to "Hallelujah" to "I'm A Believer" and "Wide Awake." Big picture view This season, fifteen brand new masked celebrities will compete for the coveted prize of The Golden Mask Trophy. Panelists Ken Jeong, Rita Ora, Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, alongside host Nick Cannon, return to the series. The new season will commemorate acclaimed franchises "Shrek" and "Ghostbusters," along with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of The Grand Ole Opry. The new season will also pay tribute to the Rat Pack by honoring the iconic crooners with salutes to their music catalogues. "The Masked Singer" will also see the return of fan-favorite themes such as "Soundtrack of My Life," "Decades" and "Boy Bands," with other all-new themes including "Olympus: Unmasking the Gods" and "Carnival."
