Cellcom will adjust customers' phone bills due to cell service outage

Cellcom will automatically adjust customers' July phone bills after a weekslong outage left thousands of Wisconsin residents and businesses without service, the company announced May 30 "We know the recent disruption shook your trust, and we're serious about earning it back," the company wrote in a May 30 Facebook post. The company said the measure was a "gesture of goodwill" and its way of thanking customers for sticking with the Howard-based cellular provider. Customers would not have to take any action for the adjustment to take effect, according to the company. The cellular provider further said that eligible customers could activate its "Double the Downtime offer," which would be a second adjustment equal to the amount of time customers were without service due to the outage. Customers would automatically receive the first adjustment to its bill and then can go here to apply for the extra adjustment by June 16, the company said. The automatic adjustment will be on the July bill and the extra one will be on the July or subsequent monthly bill. The outage began at 9 p.m. May 14, affectingh SMS texting and voice calls, leaving customers with their phones on SOS mode for days. On May 19, the company restored texting and Cellcom-to-Cellcom, with some users still reporting issues. On May 27, Cellcom said that most customers had service restored. Brighid Riordan, CEO Nsight, which owns Cellcom, said the outage was caused by a cyber incident. She the cyber incident was in an area of the network separate from where the company stores sensitive information about Cellcom and Nsight customers. Nsight, the Howard-based telecommunications company, owns Cellcom as well as Nsight Telservices and Nsight Tower. Cellcom users in Door County were unable to call 911 to report a camper fire

A camper owner and a local Door County fire chief were repeatedly unable to contact emergency services by calling 911 through their Cellcom service provider during efforts to extinguish a camper fire May 27. Cellcom says 911 service should have been working as it continues to recover from a cyberattack that shut down most of its phone services since May 14. Southern Door Fire Department Chief Rich Olson said he received a call at about 12:20 a.m. May 27 from the owner of a property on County J in the town of Clay Banks, who knew Olson's personal cellphone number, about the camper fire. "(The property owner) told me (the camper owner) attempted to call 911 four times but could not get through," Olson said. After being told of the fire, Olson then tried calling 911 himself through his phone but also couldn't make contact. He said he then used the department's nonemergency paging system to dispatch responders to the scene of the fire. The camper owner's and Olson's phones use Cellcom, whose customers have been the victims of outages since the night of May 14 following what is now being reported as a cyberattack. Cellcom customers generally have been able to call other Cellcom users but not users of other phone service carriers. Cellcom and its parent company, Howard-based Nsight, issued a Facebook post May 19 that said 911 calls made through Cellcom were working, as well as SMS texts, internet service, other communication apps such as WhatsApp and calls to other Cellcom users. Customers continued to have difficulty making calls to non-Cellcom phone lines, although a May 27 update on the company website said, "Services, including both inbound and outbound calling and text messaging, are performing well for most customers following recent restoration efforts." It also said problems may crop up intermittently as stabilization of the system continues, and those having problems should try rebooting their phones before contacting customer support. In a statement issued following the camper fire, Cellcom didn't directly address the claims of being unable to call 911 but said it followed protocols from the federal government to maintain 911 access by rerouting those calls to other networks in case of an outage. "We are sorry to hear about the recent camper fire incident," the statement said. "There are longstanding, industry-wide federal protocols in place to protect access to 911 during any carrier-specific outage. These protocols ensure that emergency calls are rerouted through other available networks during any carrier outage. We followed those protocols in full and our systems remained in compliance since the outage began." Cellcom did not immediately respond to the Door County Advocate if the company was looking into the matter, or planning to do so. The camper is a total loss, and it's not known what started the fire. The owner, who asked not to be identified, said the camper, a new one he has owned for about a month and a half, was unoccupied and nothing was plugged in at the time. He said even if his first 911 call had connected, he thinks the camper would've been a total loss because it was engulfed by flames already. The owner said responders arrived within minutes, and Olson said five Southern Door firetrucks and 14 firefighters were on hand to fight the blaze for about an hour, with an assist from the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department. Although the camper owner feels a successful 911 call wouldn't have saved the camper, both he and and Olson said they were disappointed the system failed them when they needed it. "My understanding is, it should have worked," Olson said. "It's disappointing that the 911 system didn't work. I hope (the outage is) resolved pretty soon." OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Gov. Tony Evers made a stop in Oshkosh as part of his annual 'Pothole Patrol' tour, highlighting the need for continued investment in Wisconsin's roads, bridges, and infrastructure in the upcoming state budget. Now in its fifth year, the 'Pothole Patrol' tour gives the governor a chance to meet with local public works crews and transportation leaders, while also drawing attention to the state's ongoing infrastructure needs. This year's visit was joined by representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and local officials. Cops, kids & kindness: 'Lemonade With The Law' kicks off in Oshkosh Since taking office in 2019, Gov. Evers has made infrastructure a top priority, overseeing improvements to more than 8,600 miles of roads and 2,000 bridges across the state. To put that in perspective, that's enough road to drive from Wausau, Wisconsin, to Disney World in Florida and back, three times. 'Infrastructure isn't just about fixing potholes. It's about making sure our communities can grow and thrive,' Gov. Evers said. 'We've made historic progress, but there's still more work to do.' In his 2025-27 Executive Budget, Gov. Evers proposed over $2.6 billion for the State Highway Rehabilitation Program, marking a $397 million increase from the previous cycle. Other key transportation proposals in the budget include: $100 million for the Local Roads Improvement Supplement Program; $50 million for the Agricultural Roads Improvement Program (ARIP); $790 million for major highway development, including I-41 and I-43 expansions; More than $300 million to continue work on the I-94 East/West project; Increases to general transportation and county forest road aid programs. Among the cuts were funds for ARIP, transit capital assistance, expressway policing, and local traffic calming grants. 'We're doing everything we can to keep moving forward, but these cuts are a step in the wrong direction,' said Evers. 'Strong infrastructure means safer roads, more jobs, and better opportunities for families and businesses across Wisconsin.' The governor's visit in Oshkosh is part of a broader push to rally public support for restoring these investments in the final budget. With infrastructure shaping up to be a key issue in the upcoming legislative session, the 'Pothole Patrol' is once again putting Wisconsin's roads, and those who depend on them, front and center. EMPIRE, Wis. (WFRV) – A 40-year-old man is in custody at the Fond du Lac County Jail on several charges after allegedly shooting the tire of a parked vehicle early Monday morning, authorities say. According to a release from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded at 1:00 a.m. on Memorial Day to a home on Marys Avenue in the Township of Empire for reports of shots fired. 'Full restoration could happen at any time': Cellcom releases new statement Once on scene, Witnesses told officials that one man had fired a single round from a handgun into the tire of a vehicle parked in the driveway that had two people inside of it at the time. The suspect had left the scene prior to the arrival of deputies, but he was located nearby and taken into custody without any further issue during a traffic stop. A handgun was recovered from the suspect during his arrest, and deputies report a single shell casing was recovered from the driveway with a bullet located underneath the vehicle's tire. 78-year-old man in northern Wisconsin found dead after report of person drowning The suspect and the occupants of the vehicle are said to be known to each other, and an earlier altercation led to the shooting incident. The 40-year-old man is currently being held at the Fond du Lac Jail on the following charges: Multiple Recklessly Endangering Safety Discharging a Firearm into a Vehicle Pointing a Firearm at Another Criminal Damage to Property Disorderly Conduct Carrying a Concealed Weapon Possession of THC Possession of Hallucinogenic Substances No one was hurt during the incident and an investigation is ongoing.
