India to be 3rd-largest economy by 2028, to reach $10.6 trillion by 2035: Morgan Stanley

A Morgan Stanley report on Wednesday said it expects India's economy to be the third-largest globally by 2028 and more than double in size to $10.6 trillion by 2035. Embedded in this forecast is the likelihood that three to five states (Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka) will have an economy of nearly $1 trillion each, ranking in the top 20 global economies between 2030 and 2035, the report projected. "Based on the latest data, the top three states are Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana. The states showing significant improvement in ranks over the past five years are Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh,' the report noted. India will drive a fifth of global growth in the coming decade and become essential to earnings growth for many multinational companies. 'To secure this outcome, among other things, the role of India's 28 states and eight Union Territories is critical. States not only play a pivotal role in fiscal management but also compete for investments by creating suitable policies and incentives, easing business conditions (ultimately, a business or factory is set up in a particular state),' said economists from the global financial institution. They have independent political cycles with varying mandates that can affect growth positively or negatively and are empowered by law to control factors of production. 'The success of India's competitive federalism will help decide whether she becomes a factory to the world, doubling her per capita income in the coming seven years – and whether the stock market continues its strong performance,' the report emphasised. States are economically important as India becomes a $10.6 trillion economy by 2035, wielding considerable political and legislative power. Their policy frameworks are capable of influencing India's rise as a global manufacturing hub. In the past decade, there has been a concerted push for development of physical infrastructure – the Central government doubled its capex to 3.2 per cent of GDP in FY2025 from 1.6 per cent of GDP in FY2015. This has led to significant infrastructure growth across states. 'Highways rose 60 per cent, airports doubled, and metro network quadrupled. Infrastructure programmes spearheaded by the Central government -- such as PM Gati Shakti, the National Infrastructure Pipeline, Bharatmala, Sagar Mala, and UDAN -- have been promulgated alongside state-specific initiatives,' said the report. States collaborate with the Centre on these projects and play a crucial role in planning and implementation. Further, state governments are also responsible for investments in areas related to power, water, and urban development, it mentioned.

Nimisha Priya action council seeks MEA help for Yemen talks

The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council has appealed to the Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to allow its representatives to travel to Yemen for crucial talks with the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the victim in the Nimisha Priya case. The Action Council chairperson P.M. Jabir and general convener Jayachandran K., in a memorandum to MEA Secretary, sought a relaxation of the existing travel ban to Yemen for its five-member team. It also requested the Central government to depute two members to lead the discussions in Yemen. Team members The five-member team proposed to travel to Yemen comprise Supreme Court lawyer and the council's legal advisor Subhash Chandran K.R., council treasurer N.K. Kunhammed, member and Yemen returnee Sajeev Kumar, Islamic scholar and Kerala Haj Committee chairman Hussain Saqafi Chullikkode, and Yemen expert Hamid. The council acknowledged the roles of the Central government as well as Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar and some Sufi scholars of Yemen in getting the July 16 execution of Nimisha Priya postponed. The council assured that it would raise the diyah or blood money required to save Nimisha Priya once the talks are finalised with the family without seeking any government funds. The Attorney General of India, R. Venkataramani, recently told the Supreme Court that only Nimisha Priya's family should engage with the victim's relatives in Yemen and that intervention by any other organisation would not be effective. The Supreme Court, however, asked the action council to approach the Central government. The council, in its memorandum to the MEA, said that Nimisha Priya's family would be unable to make any effective negotiations with the victim's family due to its socio-economic constraints. It also pointed out the recent allegations of financial fraud levelled by the victim's brother against the power of attorney holder representing Nimisha Priya's mother in Yemen.

Sarpanches demand release of Rs 1,121 cr Central funds

Guntur: Sarpanches from across Andhra Pradesh on Monday submitted petitions to district collectors, appealing for the release of Rs 1,121 crore in 15th Finance Commission funds from the Central government, which have been pending since December last year. They said that despite repeated appeals to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, and senior officials in the panchayat raj department, their pleas have gone unanswered for the past seven months. Under the leadership of Dr Jasti Veeranjaneyulu, national vice-president of All India Panchayat Parishad and chief advisor to the Andhra Pradesh Sarpanches Welfare Association, sarpanchs from Guntur district, cutting across party lines, submitted a memorandum to district collector S Nagalakshmi during the 'Spandana' grievances redressal programme. The sarpanches appealed to collector Nagalakshmi to facilitate the immediate release of the Central government's 15th Finance Commission funds, sent in December last year, to support the development of the panchayats. Speaking to the media outside the collector's office, Dr Jasti Veeranjanelu expressed dismay that the Rs 1,121 crore released by the central government in December last year has yet to be credited to the panchayat accounts. He criticised the practice of merely issuing government orders (GOs) and administrative approvals without disbursing the funds, calling it unreasonable. He also stated that there is little hope of receiving another Rs 1,000 crore expected from the Central government in July of the current financial year. Dr Veeranjanelu revealed that during a recent meeting with senior officials of the Union ministry of panchayat raj in Delhi, he was informed that the next tranche of Rs 1,000 crore would only be transferred if gram panchayats spent the funds received last year and submitted the utilisation certificates. Collector Nagalakshmi responded positively to the sarpanches' concerns, assuring them that she would bring the matter to the attention of the government and take immediate steps for a resolution.

'Udaipur Files' row: Govt recommends 6 changes, stalls release till SC hearing; seeks removal of Nutan Sharma name, execution scene

NEW DELHI: The Central government on Monday recommended six major changes to the controversial film 'Udaipur Files,' including replacing the name of a key character, altering an AI-generated execution scene, and deleting sensitive dialogues. The film will not be released until July 24, when the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case. The recommendations came from a government-appointed committee formed following the Delhi high court's July 10 order. While the CBFC had earlier cleared the film with 50 cuts, the Centre has now approved its release with further modifications, pending the apex court's decision. The panel has directed filmmakers to replace the original disclaimer, remove credit frames thanking specific individuals, and delete a graphic AI-generated scene resembling an execution. It also advised removing all mentions of the character 'Nutan Sharma,' replacing the name, and deleting her dialogue that references religious texts. 'Delete Nutan Sharma's dialogue: '...maine toh wohi kaha hai jo unke dharma grantho mein likha hai...',' the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting stated. Certain dialogues about the Balochi community have also been flagged for deletion. The Supreme Court had earlier asked the government to act through appropriate statutory channels and instructed the panel to consider the perspective of the accused in the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal, the subject of the film. The Delhi high court had stayed the film's release despite censor board clearance, citing concerns about communal disharmony.

Nutan Sharma Name, AI Turban Scene: Centre Proposes Six Edits To 'Udaipur Files' Before Release

Last Updated: A committee led by the Central government, formed after the Delhi High Court's July 10 order, proposed six changes to the film "Udaipur Files" before it can be released A screening committee led by the Central government, formed after the Delhi High Court's July 10 order, proposed six changes to the film 'Udaipur Files" before it can be released for public or commercial viewing, according to an official statement. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting accepted the report submitted by the committee on July 19 and directed the producers of the upcoming film to make specific changes as directed in the order. The committee advised that all references to the character named 'Nutan Sharma" be removed and replaced with a different name. It recommended deleting specific dialogues linked to the character, including one mentioning religious texts: '…maine toh wohi kaha hai jo unke dharma grantho mein likha hai…" Further, the panel recommended that the producers remove a particular AI-generated scene resembling a Saudi Arabian-style turban in the film, according to the statement. Another change suggested was to replace the current disclaimer with the recommended version and add a voice-over to accompany it. Also, the committee directed makers to remove the credit frames that express thanks to specific individuals. A committee meeting was held on July 16 to hear all concerned parties, including lawyers for the petitioner in the Delhi High Court case, representatives for Mohammed Jawed, and the filmmakers, along with their legal counsel. The film was screened before the committee on July 17. A representative from the Ministry of External Affairs was also invited to review the film from the perspective of international law and foreign relations. Another meeting took place on July 19 at 11:00 am, during which the CEO of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was heard. After reviewing all inputs, the committee submitted its report to the Ministry, which was approved by the competent authority. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 killing of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli, allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The accused reportedly carried out the act in response to a social media post supporting former BJP leader Nupur Sharma. The case is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency and is currently under trial in a special NIA court in Jaipur. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
