Preview: Ahly, Pyramids FC set for tense finale in Egyptian Premier League - Egyptian Football
The Egyptian Premier League title race will go down to the wire on Wednesday, with leaders Ahly and second-placed Pyramids FC both in action on the final matchday of the season. The two heavyweights are separated by just a couple of points after seven games in the playoffs. For Ahly, who top the table with 55 points, the mission is set to be simple: their destiny is in their own hands when they take on Pharco FC. The defending champions leapfrogged Pyramids FC in the final stretch of the competition, benefiting from Pyramids' back-to-back defeats against Pharco and NBE Club. If Ahly secure a home victory over seventh-placed Pharco, they will be crowned Egyptian champions for the second consecutive season—and the 45th time in the club's history. However, a loss could open the door for Pyramids FC, who face a tough task against Ceramica Cleopatra. The rising powerhouse of Egyptian football has no option but to beat Ceramica and hope that Ahly lose, in order to have a chance of clinching their first domestic crown. Wednesday's match poses a real dilemma for Pyramids FC. While it's crucial for their league hopes, the club also faces a vital appointment on Sunday 1st June, in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final against South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns. After securing a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Pretoria, the club requested a postponement of Wednesday's game from the Egyptian Pro League, but their request was rejected. Reports suggest that coach Krunoslav Jurčić may field a second-string side against Ceramica, though no official confirmation has been made. Ceramica, for their part, are a tough opponent and are expected to fight fiercely as they bid for fourth place, which would earn them a spot in next season's CAF Confederation Cup. Elsewhere on the final day, fourth-placed Masry (39 points) take on bottom side Haras El-Hodoud, while sixth-placed NBE Club (37 points) face Petrojet. Ceramica's late equalizer denies Zamalek victory in El-Ramady's debut - Egyptian Football
Zamalek's newly appointed coach Ayman El-Ramady kickstarted his tenure with the Cairo giants in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Ceramica Cleopatra in the fifth round of the Egyptian Premier League playoff stage at Arab Contractors Stadium on Friday. The White Knights took the lead in the 14th minute through forward Nassr Mansi, who capitalised on a goalkeeping error. Mansi pressured Ceramica Cleopatra goalkeeper Mohamed Bassam as he attempted to dribble past the forward, intercepted the ball, and slotted it into the empty net. This goal marks Mansi's 11th of the season, placing him level with Ahly's midfielder Emam Ashour at the top of the league's scoring chart. Ceramica dominated possession after the opener but struggled to break down Zamalek's compact defence, while the visitors found it difficult to carve out chances against their opponents' disciplined backline. Despite Zamalek's early advantage, Ceramica dominated possession and sought to equalize, but their players struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, Zamalek found it challenging to penetrate Ceramica's solid and well-organized defense. After the break, Ceramica intensified their efforts to level the score, but their attacking waves continued to falter in front of Zamalek's defense. However, in the 64th minute, Ceramica finally found the equalizer. Following a series of precise short passes, Islam Eissa scored from close range after connecting with a well-placed cross. Zamalek responded just five minutes later when second-half substitute Seifeddine Jaziri capitalized on a pass from midfielder Nabil Emad. Jaziri skillfully dribbled past Ceramica's defense, nutmegging goalkeeper Bassam to restore his side's lead. The drama continued as Ceramica managed to level the score again four minutes into injury time, as second-half substitute Ahmed Belhadji headed in a cross from Mohamed Shokry. Both sides pushed for a late winner in a frenetic finale but lacked the composure to convert further chances. With this result, Zamalek remain in third place in the league standings with 41 points, while Ceramica hold onto sixth spot with 31 points. El-Ramady's men will face a tough test against Pyramids FC on Tuesday, while Ceramica host reigning champions Ahly. The big concerns of small businesses
As Indiana celebrates Small Business Week, the confidence of entrepreneurs across the nation is waning. Why it matters: The formation and growth rates of small businesses are strong indicators of overall economic sentiment in an area, meaning owner attitudes can cast a large shadow. Plus: The continued presence of local companies you can't find anywhere else is part of what helps Indy stand out as a top destination. Driving the news: The latest U.S. Chamber of Commerce index illustrates just how much economic difficulties and tariff worries are weighing on the business world right now. Researchers surveyed 755 small business owners between Jan. 28 and Feb. 14 as well as operators who run companies with 500 or fewer people. The index fell to 62.3 in the first quarter of 2025, down from 69.1 the last quarter of 2024. A higher score indicates more positive sentiment, with 100 being the best possible score. By the numbers: 66% of small business owners say they are comfortable with their cash flow, down from 72% in Q4 2024. 58% cite inflation as a top concern, its highest level since tracking began in 2021 and a 6 percentage point increase from this time last year. What they're saying:"There was tremendous optimism that the election would sweep in measures and policies that would lower costs," says Tom Sullivan, vice president of small business policy at the Chamber of Commerce. "Not only do small businesses not believe that's happened, but the uncertainty, specifically around tariffs, has led [them] to believe that inflation isn't going down." Yes, but: The Midwest is the most confident region, with an index of 63. The West has the lowest index, at 61.8. Zoom in: For Zack and Shana Light, husband and wife co-owners of Indianapolis-based masonry engraving business Ceramica, the key to maintaining confidence amid uncertainty is adapting to the conditions without losing their identity. Flashback: Zack Light's grandfather founded Ceramica in 1988. It got its first big break in 1989 when it was chosen to lead production of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's engraved fundraising pavers. Over the years, they've done projects for the Indiana War Memorial, Indianapolis Zoo, St. Vincent Women's Hospital, Bartholomew County Veterans Memorial and more. On tariffs, Shana Light said about 80% of the business is focused on the use of domestic materials, making it less of a concern for them compared to other business owners. But the 20% that focused on imports was a fast-growing arm that has lost reach in recent months. Zack Light said a bigger focus is for them rising employment and labor costs. "If I'm gonna have to put money somewhere, I'd rather it be the people that work for us," he said. "It does allow us to kind of put more investment behind our employees," Shana Light added. "As they learn more and become more skilled craftsmen or better designers, we can reinvest in them and push them forward as individuals."
