Young Women's Leadership Academy to compete in STEM competition
Jan. 30—Teams of middle and high school students from Midland's Young Women's Leadership Academy, an all-girls Midland ISD school serving mostly low-income students, are poised to participate in the Young Women's Preparatory Network STEM Challenge, a groundbreaking competition for tomorrow's science leaders to envision solutions to help cope with our planet's biggest national disasters.
The Young Women's Leadership Academy students' projects are ambitious:
— The middle school team has created a multi-layer car cover to repel even the largest hail, constructed with plastic, mattress foam and blow-up mattress material that can be stored in the back of your car.
— The high school girls have developed Aqua Alert, a buoy that detects electricity in water to protect people from electrocution during the aftermath of storms.
Beginning Feb. 14, the public can vote for the teams for the STEM Challenge People's Choice Award at Votes cost $1, which goes to support the Challenge.
Teams will travel to North Texas to compete and present in front of both STEM executives and the public at NorthPark Center in Dallas on Feb. 22 from 1-4 p.m.
