Goa Challengers begins its quest for hat-trick of titles
When Harmeet Desai led the Dempo Goa Challengers to a terrific triumph in Chennai last September, the team scripted history by becoming the first team to win two titles, and that too back-to-back, in Ultimate Table Tennis. As the franchise-based table tennis league returns for its sixth edition, Challengers would be gunning to register a hat-trick of triumphs. Challengers would begin their quest by taking on Ahmedabad SG Pipers, who will hope to see Amdavadis turn up to support it despite the IPL frenzy in town for the next four days. Pipers had a topsy-turvy campaign to its campaign in the last edition. Despite receiving a setback in Manika Batra's late pull-out due to a conspicuous injury, Pipers would be banking on Ayhika Mukherjee to grab the opportunity and Ricardo Walther to absorb the pressure against Harmeet & Co. 'To win it twice was thrilling last year. A hat-trick of titles — that too in my home state — will be an incredible achievement. We know how challenging and competitive UTT is, but we are confident Goa Challengers can repeat history,' Harmeet told The Hindu on Friday. Manika's injury has increased the list of prominent Indian absentees. A. Sharath Kamal hung up his boots in March while Manush Shah, the defending men's singles National champion, and Manav Thakkar have preferred their pro commitments over UTT. Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, Vidit Gujrathi and Anish Giri to headline Chennai Grand Masters event
India No. 1 and World No. 4 Arjun Erigaisi will headline the 2025 Quantbox Chennai Grand Masters event, one of the strongest tournaments (by average ratings) in India, set to take place in the chess capital from August 6 to 15 this year. Joining Arjun in the classical super tournament — a crucial event for FIDE Circuit Rating points in the 2025 cycle — will be top Indian stars like Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi in the Masters section. Meanwhile, the Challengers section will feature young talents like Leon Luke Mendonca and R. Vaishali. Harika Dronavalli, India's second-highest-rated woman in live ratings, and B. Adhiban will also compete in the Challengers. Charity helps Surrey SEND children awaiting places
A charity dedicated to helping inclusion is expanding the help it offers to parents of children with special educational needs (SEND) in said what it calls its "alternative provision" is needed because 248 children in the county are still waiting to hear if they have a school place for September charity's work has set up a new programme in County Council said it has already invested £260m in its SEND programme, and is lobbying central government for wider changes to the system. Challengers supports children from five to 18 and the new project in Guildford is for five to Dearman from the charity told BBC Radio Surrey: "This means they have somewhere to go, that it's not just home. We can help them understand there's a routine."They can play, they can make friends, they can communicate. Without it they would be isolated, their mental health would suffer."We want to get them in a place where they know that when they do find a school placement they're ready and able to integrate into education." Selina Clayton from Ash in Surrey brings her son, who has non-verbal autism to said: "Children can go there with their families and relax and feel welcomed, and take the time to speak to other parents."Their siblings can be with other siblings who understand it." 'Wider changes' A spokesman for Surrey County Council said the number of children in the county with EHCPs (Education, Health and Care Plans) "has more than doubled between 2018 and 2025, and there are currently over 45,000 children and young people with SEND".They said: "We have invested a total of £260 million in our ambitious SEND and alternative provision programmes, to increase our maintained specialist education estate to about 5,760 places by 2032."We and other bodies are consistently lobbying government for wider system changes, additional funding and urgent reform."
