Patrick Moroney Appointed Convenor Selector For South Africa Men's Cricket

Last Updated: Patrick Moroney is the new convenor selector for South Africa's men's cricket team. With selector roles since 2001, he starts his tenure on August 1. Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Thursday that Patrick Moroney has been appointed as the new convenor selector for the national men's team. Earlier this year, CSA revealed that it would reintroduce the national convenor selector role and invited applications for the position by April 29. The role had been vacant since Victor Mpitsang's departure in 2023. Following his exit, Test coach Shukri Conrad and limited-overs coach Rob Walter took on the selection responsibilities until Conrad assumed command of all formats after Walter stepped down following the 2025 Champions Trophy. Moroney has extensive experience, having served as Director of Sport and Marketing at the high school level and holding various selector positions, including roles with the Youth Men Talent Identification Programme and as the Lions Cricket Convenor of Selectors, among others. Since 2001, he has refined his skills as a selector and has previously held the position of Convenor of Selectors for the SA National Academy, SA Emerging, and men's U19 teams. 'CSA is extremely proud to welcome Patrick into this pivotal role as Convenor Selector for the Proteas Men's Team." 'His deep understanding of the game, combined with decades of experience in talent identification and selection across various levels, makes him the ideal person for the job. We are thrilled to welcome Patrick on board and look forward to working closely with him, as well as witnessing the positive impact he will undoubtedly make," said Enoch Nkwe, Director of National Teams and High Performance, in a statement. As the newly appointed Convenor Selector, Moroney will report to Nkwe and collaborate closely with head coach Conrad. He will be based at the CSA Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Pretoria and will officially begin his three-year tenure from August 1. India Given Blunt Advice: 'Push Jasprit Bumrah To Play; If He Doesn't, Then...'

Last Updated: There's uncertainty over Jasprit Bumrah's participation in the next Test given he's expected to play in only three matches of the England tour. With India losing the third Test at Lord's, Anil Kumble has advised the team to avoid resting their pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah if they want to avoid losing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Bumrah has two five-wicket hauls in as many Tests of the ongoing series which India trail 1-2 after a close defeat on Monday. The 31-year-old, expected to play in three of the five Tests of England tour, has already played in two games which has left the team management with a big headache: Should Bumrah play or be rested for the 4th Test? Kumble said if he were part of the Indian team management, Bumrah would play at Old Trafford – the venue of third Test. 'I would certainly, if I'm part of that group, push Bumrah to play the next game," Kumble told JioHotstar after the match. 'That's crucial. If he doesn't play and then we lose the Test, that's it – the series is done and dusted." Kumble pointed out the eight-day gap between the third and fourth Test which as long enough for Bumrah to rest and recover. 'I think Bumrah should play both the remaining Tests. I know he's said he's going to play only three, but there's a long break after this. He doesn't have to play the home series – he can take a break if needed. But I believe he should be out there for the next two," he said. The right-arm, widely considered as the best fast bowler in the world currently, has a history of injuries which have pushed him to the sidelines for significant periods. The latest setback came towards the end of India's Australia tour earlier this year in January when Bumrah hurt his back and missed nearly two months of cricket including the Champions Trophy. Bumrah had played in all five Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and given his fitness concerns, it was decided that he will only play in three Tests of the England tour. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 13:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BCCI-PCB meeting in Singapore? Asia Cup 2025 discussion reportedly set for ICC AGM sidelines

Amid suspense over India's participation in the Asia Cup 2025, a report states that a big move can be made on the sidelines of the ICC Annual General Meeting in Singapore, which starts on Thursday. read more India and Pakistan last played against each other in February 2025 in Champions Trophy. Image: PTI More clarity on the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 could emerge after the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 in Singapore, which will take place from 17 to 20 July, as the Asian giants, including India and Pakistan, could hold talks on the sidelines of the event. The Asia Cup 2025, which will take place in the T20 format as a preparatory tournament for the T20 World Cup 2026, is pencilled in to take place in September with India being the hosts. However, the future of the 2025 Asia Cup has been up in the air since April's Pahalgam terror attack in India, resulting in 26 deaths, and the retaliatory attacks by India through Operation Sindoor, as they destroyed multiple terror camps in Pakistan. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Asia Cup 2025 future remains in limbo Since then, there have been reports that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unwilling to take part in a tournament that is hosted by a body headed by a Pakistani. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is headed by the current Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi. However, that claims have been since refuted by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. 'Since this morning, it has come to our notice about some news items about BCCI's decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both ACC's events,' Saikia said. India's participation in matches against Pakistan has been regulated by the Indian government in recent years, with the two neighbouring nations only competing against each other in ICC tournaments in cricket. The last bilateral series between the two countries was played in 2012-13. All of these point towards India boycotting the Asia Cup 2025. But considering the money riding on the tournament, it's quite possible that India and Pakistan get ready for the tournament eventually. Asia Cup media rights were acquired by Sony Pictures Networks India from 2024 to 2031 at a base price of $170 million. In case India do not take part in the tournament, ACC and Sony Sports are set to face massive losses. India-Pakistan cricket meet in Singapore? Efforts to get India to agree to take part in the Asia Cup 2025 could now take place at the ICC AGM, as per Forbes. The Asia Cup falls under the purview of ACC, but the ICC AGM will be used to hold discussions between BCCI and PCB on the sidelines regarding the continental tournament. The report also added that the Asia Cup 2025 will take place in the United Arab Emirates if it' not cancelled. However, if India pull out of the tournament, there's a good chance the tournament will be cancelled.

World's best bowler Jasprit Bumrah has to play Manchester Test: Ex-India cricketer

Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels that Jasprit Bumrah has to play the fourth Test against England in Manchester. Bumrah has been one of India's best bowlers so far in the series, despite playing only two out of the three Tests. Bumrah picked up five-wicket hauls in both the matches he has played and has got 12 wickets from 4 innings at an average of 21. advertisementBefore the start of the series, the attention was firmly on the star pacer's workload management as he had missed the Champions Trophy due to a back injury he suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gautam Gambhir said that Bumrah would only play three out of the five Tests and reiterated that stance after the loss at Headingley. With Shubman Gill also remaining coy on the pacer's participation in the Manchester Test, Dasgupta feels that it has to be a necessity. Speaking to Star Sports, the former India wicketkeeper said that he heard rumours that Bumrah would only play the first, third and fifth Tests. However, Dasgupta feels that with India 1-2 behind in the series, he feels the Manchester Test now becomes crucial. "Jasprit Bumrah in the fourth Test, absolutely yes. I've heard rumors that the plan for him was to play in the first, third and fifth Tests. But now, when India are 1-2 behind, the fourth Test becomes very, very crucial. You would definitely want the world's best bowler to play.'There is an eight-day gap'The Lord's Test came to an end on July 14 and the next match is scheduled to be played on July 23. Dasgupta feels that the gap is enough for Bumrah to rest and be ready for the next match. There is an eight-day gap between the two Tests. It remains to be seen whether the fifth Test is still relevant after the fourth Test, but the relevance of the fourth Test is considerable," said Dasgupta. Many of the former players, including Anil Kumble, has advised Bumrah to play the next two Tests and take rest later on. - EndsTune InMust Watch

IND-W vs ENG-W: India Women seek balance amid key issues before World Cup

The Indian men's team clinched the T20 World Cup last year, followed by a Champions Trophy triumph. Meanwhile, the women's team is still in pursuit of its maiden World Cup title. They will have a golden opportunity to end that wait when the marquee tournament begins on September the lead-up to the World Cup, India has six matches to fine-tune their preparations - starting with a three-match ODI series against England, followed by another three ODIs at home against Australia. Since their disappointing T20 World Cup campaign last year in the UAE, the team has shown steady improvement, securing ODI series wins over West Indies, New Zealand, and Ireland, along with a tri-nation series victory in Sri recently, India edged out England 3-2 in a T20I series. However, with the 50-over World Cup on the horizon, the team's focus has now shifted to addressing key concerns in the One-Day format. As the ODI series opener against England kicks off on July 16, India will be aiming to find the right balance and team composition ahead of the global of the road for Shafali? Shafali Verma hasn't played ODIs this year for India. Courtesy: Reuters Since being dropped after the New Zealand ODIs last year, Shafali Verma has yet to reclaim her spot in the One-Day setup. It's not for lack of runs—Shafali has been in prolific form, scoring heavily in domestic cricket and for the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Women's Premier League (WPL). However, it's the meteoric rise of Pratika Rawal that has kept her out of the the T20I series against England, Shafali smashed 176 runs at an impressive strike rate of 158.55. But when it comes to ODIs, how do you make space for Shafali when Pratika has been so dominant - averaging 63.80 and becoming the fastest player to reach 500 runs in Women's ODIs?Despite the competition, head coach Amol Muzumdar believes Shafali is still very much in contention for a spot in the ODI World Cup squad. Muzumdar acknowledged that choosing between Shafali and Pratika is a "happy headache" for the Indian team."So I think there's a lot of depth in this Indian line-up, a good headache to have as a coaching staff. And Shafali has been a terrific player. There's no doubt about it that she will be in the mix. She will be amongst the core group of India. There's no doubt in my mind about it,' Muzumdar Shafali remains in India's plans, it's imperative she gets an opportunity in the ODIs against Australia - crucial to assessing where her game stands in the longer chance for Charani Shree Charani picked up 10 wickets in the T20I series against England. Courtesy: Reuters The Indian squad for the England series already features Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana - frontrunners to lead India's spin attack at the World Cup. But one spinner who has recently made a compelling case for herself is left-armer Shree Charani. After an impressive maiden stint in the WPL, Charani earned her first ODI call-up for the Sri Lanka tri-series, where she picked up six wickets in five carried that momentum into her T20I debut, making an immediate impact. In the series against England, Charani emerged as India's leading wicket-taker, claiming 10 wickets at an economy rate of 7.46, including a four-wicket haul that was instrumental in the team's Charani, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said, "She's a key player for us. In the WPL, where she played two-three [two] matches [for Delhi Capitals], she was impressive. From there only, we all [team management and selectors] had a chat that she can be a very good option for us.'Now part of the ODI squad, Charani will be eager to deliver another strong performance and add to the selectors' headaches when it comes to finalizing the playing XI. With Sneh Rana having taken 15 wickets in just five games in Sri Lanka, and Deepti Sharma bringing a wealth of experience, Charani may not be an automatic selection—but she's certainly pushing hard for a bowling strong enough? Amanjot Kaur played in the T20I series against England. Courtesy: Reuters Pooja Vastrakar and Renuka Singh are India's frontline fast bowlers, but both have been absent from international action recently due to injuries. Vastrakar hasn't featured for India since the T20 World Cup last year, sidelined by a knee injury, while Renuka has been out of action since the 2025 their absence, India have rotated through options like Saima Thakor, Sayali Satghare, Arundhati Reddy, and others in search of with 35 wickets in 19 ODIs, has been a key pillar of India's pace attack. Without her presence, the pace unit appears noticeably thin. For the England series, India have called up Kranti Gaud, Satghare, Amanjot Kaur, and others, but the attack still lacks the bite that Renuka and Vastrakar must remember that on days when the spinners come under pressure, it's the pacers who need to step up and shoulder the have reached two World Cup finals but have fallen short on both occasions. A recurring issue has been their tendency to retreat into a shell after early setbacks. Playing at home this time should provide a significant confidence boost, backed by passionate home turning their World Cup dream into reality will ultimately depend on how well they handle high-pressure games against top sides like Australia, New Zealand, and England.- Ends
