Astrobotic Xodiac rocket crashes in the Mojave, CEO says won't impact lunar landing mission

North Shore-based aerospace company Astrobotic Technology Inc.'s Xodiac rocket crashed in the Mojave Desert. The terrestrial rocket has been used by the company for 10 years to conduct test flights. During flight 176, the vehicle detected an anomaly on descent, leading to it crashing and its ultimate destruction. No one was injured, and the test site itself is undamaged. RELATED COVERAGE >>> Channel 11 speaks with Astrobotic CEO after Peregrine mission 'We're disappointed, but we're also not terribly surprised, and we're really proud of what this vehicle was able to accomplish over its 10-year lifetime,' CEO John Thornton said. 'For any flying vehicle, that's a pretty darn good service record, I mean, there are even cars that sometimes don't last 10 years, so it certainly did what it needed to do during its service life.' Wilkinsburg Mayor says young men are shooting women with stun, pellet, BB guns

A local mayor is warning women in his community to be on the lookout. Wilkinsburg Mayor Dontae Comans posted to his Facebook page saying 'Our law enforcement partners have shared concerning intel regarding young males targeting women by shooting at them with stun guns, air pistols, and BB guns. These senseless acts are not only dangerous, but they also threaten the safety and peace of our community.' 'I see people on Facebook and stuff talking about it,' Wilkinsburg resident Jaraya Lane said. 'I heard about it before. It happens like every year around this time.' It's never happened to her, but Jaraya says she knows people who have been hit. 'They just think it's fun but people don't be thinking it's fun.' Mayor Comans called the trend 'reckless' and said officers would be increasing patrols. 'That's definitely the right move to make. They need to,' Wilkinsburg resident Tracy Johnson said. Neighbors told Channel 11 it's not just posing a danger to the women being targeted, but to the young men doing it. 'Somebody might pull out a real gun and shoot them,' Johnson. Both women shared a message. 'Don't do it. Simply, find a different hobby or go paintballing somewhere. They've got different places they can play at,' Lane said. 'They need to stop before they get hurt or go to jail,' Johnson said. Citing law enforcement partners, the mayor's post included safety tips like walking in pairs. He's also asking anyone with information to police or 911. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Follow Channel 11 News on Facebook and Twitter. | Watch WPXI NOW

Juneteenth festival promoter files legal action against City of Pittsburgh

The promoter of the region's largest Juneteenth festival has filed legal action against the city of Pittsburgh. B. Marshall filed what's known as a writ of mandamus against the city in an effort to compel the city to issue a permit for his celebration. Marshall has everything in place for the celebration that is set for Mellon Park in East Liberty on June 19-22, except the final permit from the city. Channel 11 spoke with Marshall's attorney, who says Marshall filed the paperwork in February but has yet to hear from the city. Attorney Phil DiLucente said he's hoping the legal filing will propel the city to finally act. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts. Charges filed against woman in deadly February 2024 crash

Charges have been filed against a woman police say was under the influence of marijuana when she crashed her car head-on into another vehicle in the opposing lane of traffic on Route 217 in Derry Township in February 2024. Troopers said Ashley Kelley crossed the center line and hit a car driven by Regina Endress head-on. Endress was killed immediately. A 10-year-old who was in the car with her was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. It's unclear if Kelley or the two children in her car were hurt. On Tuesday, Pennsylvania State Police arrested Kelley and charged her with homicide by vehicle, reckless endangerment, and driving under the influence. Troopers said she tested positive for marijuana after the crash. According to the criminal complaint, troopers said Kelley told them: 'I don't know if my eyes bugged out or if I zoned out.' She allegedly told police she realized she was in the opposite lane, and saw the other car in front of her. Then she allegedly said, 'It was too late for me to attempt to avoid the collision and I hit the other vehicle head-on.' Channel 11's Andrew Havranek spoke with Endress' mom, son, and uncle on the phone. They were understandably too emotional to do interviews said they were glad charges are now filed against Kelley. After the crash, there were several tributes posted to honor Endress on Facebook. Her boyfriend — John — posted a week after the crash saying, 'Today was rough actually the toughest day I have ever had. She was an angel on earth. Now she is an angel in heaven. I will love and miss her forever. Life will never be the same.' Another friend wrote, 'I'm so heartbroken right now. I'm going to miss you so much. You were an amazing friend and always cheering me on.' Kelley is out of jail tonight on bond. She's due in court at the end of June. Download the FREE WPXI News app for breaking news alerts.
