Where does UNC baseball land in final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll of 2025 season?
Is anyone else still thinking about UNC's sudden end to its 2025 baseball season? It still doesn't feel real that the UNC baseball team missed a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series, but virtually anything can happen in the wild game called baseball. North Carolina dominated Arizona, 18-2, in Game 1 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional. Virtually every starting Diamond Heel notched a hit, while five drove in multiple runners. Jake Knapp continued his undefeated streak, later earning National Pitcher of the Year honors. UNC's bats came to play in Game 2, but pitching was virtually non-existent in a tough loss. North Carolina's offense disappeared in Game 3, outside of Jackson Van De Brake's 3-run home run, but its young bullpen failed to back up Ryan Lynch's hot start. The Diamond Heels had a roster built to compete for a national championship, but they couldn't close out games when it mattered most. In one final USA TODAY Sports Coaches' Poll for the 2025 college baseball season, UNC ranks eighth, dropping seven spots from first overall. National champion LSU, rightfully so, leads the final poll. CWS runner-up Coastal Carolina ended second, Arkansas and Oregon State finished third and fourth respectfully, UCLA landed fifth, Louisville finished sixth, followed by Arizona as teams ahead of North Carolina. The Diamond Heels wave goodbye to plenty of offensive production, needing to replace all starters but Gavin Gallaher in their infield, plus starting catcher Luke Stevenson. Knapp is out of eligibility, so another ace needs to step up. UNC re-loaded ahead of its 2025 campaign, one in which it surpassed expectations. Two UNC baseball starters named finalists for top defensive award Can two UNC baseball star add a little hardware to their trophy cases? The UNC baseball team found itself one win away from a second-consecutive trip to the College World Series, but after a 4-3 loss in Game 3 of the Chapel Hill Super Regional, watched its season come to a heartbreaking end. North Carolina dominated Arizona in Game 1, 18-2 , then struggled on the mound in a 10-8 Game 2 defeat. Despite the Diamond Heels taking a late lead in Game 3, their bats disappeared ahead of a potential ninth-inning rally. A major part of UNC's success throughout the Chapel Hill Super Regional came from two program veterans: starting catcher Luke Stevenson and starting shortstop Alex Madera. Stevenson mashed two hits – including a home run – and drove in four runners during a Game 1 domination. Madera hit 4-of-13 during the Supers, including a 2-RBI performance in Game 1 and 2-hit outing in Game 2. Though Stevenson and Madera's hitting abilities garner most of their attention, their defense is amongst college baseball's best. On June 16, Stevenson and Madera earned finalist nominations for the ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove awards. The collegiate Gold Glove award, just like in the MLB, is presented annually to the top defensive players at each position. Stevenson and Madera will discover if they're winners on Wednesday, June 18. The Diamond Heels are just one of two teams, along with UCLA (first baseman Mulivai Levu, shortstop Roch Cholowsky), to have multiple finalists. Stevenson compiled a .996 fielding percentage, committed just four errors and recorded 987 putouts over his first two seasons in Chapel Hill. If Stevenson forgoes July's MLB Draft and returns to North Carolina for his junior season, he'll have a chance to further improve upon those numbers. Madera, who transferred into UNC from Divison-III Arcadia University before the 2024 season, became a mainstay in the middle infield. Starting primarily at shortstop this season and at second base last year, Madera recorded a .982 fielding percentage (eight errors), 281 assists and 149 putouts across his Diamond Heels career. If not for several late-inning blunders in their Chapel Hill Super Regional, the North Carolina Tar Heels would be part of this year's College World Series field. UNC dominated Arizona in Game 1, 18-2, then lost 10-8 in Game 2. North Carolina's offense was virtually non-existent in Sunday's Game 3 loss, a 4-3 collapse, with the home team's only runs coming from a Jackson Van De Brake 3-run bomb. The Diamond Heels' bullpen struggled in Games 1 and 2, while Van De Brake committed a costly Game 3 error that shifted momentum. North Carolina should return most of its roster in 2025, but it'll have a much younger team. One star player UNC will miss is catcher Luke Stevenson, who – despite struggling in the Chapel Hill Super Regional – proved himself worthy of an MLB Draft selection. In USA TODAY Sports' latest 2025 MLB Mock Draft – ahead of the College World Series – which starts on Friday, June 13 at 1 p.m. with an Arizona-Coastal Carolina matchup, Stevenson is mocked 26th overall to the Philadelphia Phillies. "(He) does not possess the current offensive profile that (Auburn catcher Ike) Irish offers, but Stevenson is a pure catcher, with an athletic 6-foot-1, 210-pound frame that hit 19 homers for the Tar Heels this season," Gabe Lacques wrote. Stevenson hit for a career .267 batting average during his 2-year career as a Diamond Heel, collecting 117 hits, while mashing 33 home runs and driving in 116 runners. Though you may hear more about his offense, Stevenson is quite the defensive catcher, too, committing just four errors through 125 games.
