British and Irish Lions star who dated Charlotte Church is now pub landlord with huge net worth
Representing the British and Irish Lions is the pinnacle of rugby in the northern hemisphere, but one former tourist who was engaged to Charlotte Church now runs a successful pub Once referred to as 'the David Beckham of rugby ', Gavin Henson seemed to be primed for a spot among the sport's true greats. There was even a point when the darling of Wales featured in headlines on a regular basis, and not always for his feats on the pitch. As the British and Irish Lions look to seal a series win over Australia on Saturday, fans will be reminded of Henson's part he played on the 2005 tour of New Zealand. The fly-half-cum-centre, who later competed on Strictly Come Dancing during a rugby sabbatical, travelled to the other side of the world to face the All Blacks, who were at the time a nigh-unstoppable force on the field. In addition to being a glitzy character in his athletic career, Henson also had the celebrity love life to go with it following his relationship with Charlotte Church. The star duo were even engaged to be wed at one point but ultimately called off their nuptials. Henson retired from professional rugby in 2019 but made a brief comeback for local club Pencoed last year. However, the Welshman has by no means been idle in retirement after becoming the landlord of a successful pub close to home. Here, Mirror Sport looks at his time with the Lions and his life away from rugby. Gavin Henson's Lions experience Henson's lifespan with the Lions was relatively short and not-so-sweet. At a time when New Zealand were an almost undeniable force in rugby union, a tour to to their neck of the woods represented the kind of test that would intimidate even the most seasoned of veterans. Henson was barely 23 when he was called up by coach Clive Woodward, making five appearances for the Lions that summer. That included one cap at centre in the second Test, which ended in a grisly 48-18 defeat to the hosts, who swept the series 3-0. Although he might sooner forget, Henson was partly at fault for New Zealand's opening try that day in Wellington. It was his missed tackle on Dan Carter that saw the All Blacks race 70 metres up the pitch, with captain Tana Umaga going over to put his side in front. A stinger injury ruled Henson, who scored two tries against Southland in a previous warm-up fixture, out of the third Test. However, the damage was done by that point as a second straight Test defeat put any chance at victory out of the Lions' reach. More recently, Henson correctly predicted head coach Andy Farrell would call his son, Owen, up to the squad. And he also made an intriguing outside-the-box call for England's Fin Smith to start the Tests ahead of Scotland counterpart Finn Russell, though that hasn't materialised yet. "The No. 10 spot is a big decision for Farrell to make… probably the biggest," Henson told The Rugby Paper in June. "Personally, I would start with Smith. He brings other players around him into the game, whereby with Finn Russell it is more of an individual thing. You need to bring the whole game around him – and I'm not sure we have the time with the limited warm-up games to do that." What is Gavin Henson's net worth? It's difficult to ascertain an exact figure when it comes to Henson's current net worth, but Yahoo! estimated earlier this year that he's valued at roughly £800,000. That's based largely around his career as a rugby player, with little known about his current earnings as landlord of The Fox pub in the Vale of Glamorgan. Henson first emerged as a prospect with Swansea and then Ospreys, who were at one point a force to be reckoned with in Europe. That culminated in the player being awarded a four-year deal with the club in 2005, which The Guardian reported to be worth £750,000 (almost £190,000 per year before tax). In the early days of rugby's professional era, this was considered a massive sum, particularly for one only starting out their career. After that contract ended, Henson had stints with Saracens, Toulon, Cardiff, Bath, Bristol, the Dragons and others but failed to fully regain the form he enjoyed in the early days of his rise. After retiring at Newport in 2019, the versatile back made a swift move into pub management when he took over as landlord of The Fox (The Fox and Hounds). Fast-forward to today, and Henson has made a serious success of his investment, promoting his brand at speaking events. Speaking to The Times, he said: "I was coming to the end of my career, and it [the pub] had been sat here for 18 months, two years. It was not nice for the village, and I needed something to do after rugby and to be busy, not to mourn rugby and get depressed, as they say everyone does. "But be careful what you wish for because this is so full-on. We want to feel like we've achieved something with the pub. We're perfectionists. We're all about the detail." Charlotte Church relationship Henson and Church went public with their relationship in 2005 when the former was enjoying the peak of his rugby career. Church gave birth to their first child, daughter Ruby, in September 2007. The pair welcomed a son, Dexter, in January 2009 and looked set to wed after announcing their engagement the same year. However, the date was called off in mid-2010 when Henson and Church decided to go their separate ways. The five-year relationship was a frequent feature in newspaper and gossip magazines. That publicity likely played a heavy role in the eventual break-up, with both Henson and singer Church widely scrutinised after bursting into stardom as youngsters. The pair have never aired details behind their split, though Church said it was a joint-decision, telling Heat Magazine: "When he proposed, I was overjoyed. It was amazing. I really was going to marry Gav and spend the rest of my life with him. "But then he came back from Norway [where he filmed reality show 71 Degrees North], and he'd changed, and I'd had time to think. We had both had a change of heart, so we were both of the same mind." It's understood the two maintain a healthy relationship today as they co-parent their teenage offspring. Henson has since found love again after tying the knot with Katie Wilson Mould in 2019, while Church married musician Jonathan Powell two years prior.

BBC's Celebrity Traitors is ‘blowing a whopping £760,000 on cast salaries'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The amount of money that the cast of Celebrity Traitors is being paid has reportedly been revealed ahead of the launch of the BBC series. Later this year, the celebrity iteration of the gripping gameshow is making its highly anticipated debut, boasting an array of high-profile British stars in the line-up. Comedian Alan Carr, singer Charlotte Church, presenter Stephen Fry and Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway are among those who'll be going head to head as either Traitors or Faithfuls, in the hope of winning £100,000 for their chosen charity. However, aside from one of them being awarded money for a worthy cause, it's also been claimed that each of them is being paid a significant salary to take part. On the latest episode of the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, hosts Marina Hyde and Richard Osman spoke about the fees that the A-listers are receiving when they enter the castle with host Claudia Winkleman. 'It's certainly interesting to compare something like Celebrity Traitors on the BBC to I'm a Celebrity on ITV. Although we haven't seen the celebrity iteration yet, but we know it's gonna be massive. Look at the calibre of the people they got,' journalist Marina remarked. We don't have a fixed release date yet, but Celebrity Traitors is coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this autumn. We'll update you when we know more! Comedian Alan Carr Singer and songwriter Cat Burns Actor Celia Imrie Singer Charlotte Church Broadcaster Clare Balding Historian David Olusoga Former England rugby player Joe Marler Comedian Joe Wilkinson Presenter Jonathan Ross Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway Comedian Lucy Beaumont Actor Mark Bonnar Actor and comedian Nick Mohammed Content creator Niko Omilana Singer and songwriter Paloma Faith Actor Ruth Codd Actor and presenter Stephen Fry Actor and comedian Tameka Empson Former professional diver Tom Daley The prize money for winning Celebrity Traitors will be £100,000, which will go the the charity of the winner's choosing. After Richard revealed that he's spoken to someone who's seen the first episode, and has heard that it's 'apparently amazing', Marina shed further light on the fees. I am spilling all my tea today. They're paying them a 40k fee,' she shared. If everyone in this year's series of Celebrity Traitors cast is receiving a blanket fee of £40,000, this would mean that at least £760,000 is being dished out on the stars taking part. This would also mean that the amount being paid to the celebrities is seven times greater than the £100,000 prize pot that'll be going to charity. However, these reported salaries are still far lower than the fees that are paid to stars who take part in ITV's I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! In 2024, it was claimed that Coleen Rooney had received the highest paycheck for entering the jungle, taking home a reported £1.5million. Former professional boxer Barry McGuigan is said to have received £500,000 for his stint on the show, while Harry Redknapp, who was crowned the King of the Jungle in his season, also apparently was paid the same amount. It was recently claimed that the cast of Celebrity Traitors faced a unique problem during filming, when members of the crew initially refused to tell them the time when they asked. More Trending 'When we were in the castle, you'd be like, 'What's the time?' And they'd say, 'It's Traitors time.' That was their response,' said Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed on The Comedian's Comedian Podcast. 'Every single member of production had to answer with that until someone kicked off. And then someone said it is basically alright, and you can tell us the time.' Metro has contacted the BBC for comment. Charlotte Church seriously distracts Good Morning Britain viewers with outfit that 'looks like nightwear' - jeering that 'Ofcom will be waiting for complaints'
Charlotte Church seriously distracted Good Morning Britain viewers on Wednesday with an outfit that 'looks like nightwear'. The singer, 39, appeared on the ITV show to chat to Richard Madeley, 69, and Kate Garraway, 58, about her time on celebrity version of The Traitors. The Crazy Chick songstress was over the moon to be reunited with her co-star Kate, who has also taken part in the first series. Charlotte opted for a purple low cut shirt and nude lace v-cut cami underneath, which was on full display for everyone watching. The star styled her hair into loose waves and accessorised with some dangling gold earrings. Many rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their shock over her choice of attire for 7:55am. The singer appeared on the ITV show to chat to Richard Madeley, 69, and Kate Garraway, 58, about her time on celebrity version of The Traitors 'OFCOM eagerly awaiting complaints regarding Charlotte Church's outfit. #GMB.' 'You're hardly dressed for a.m. TV Charlotte. Is this your nightwear?' 'Charlotte Church is on breakfast TV in a low cut dress, push up bra and covered in snake tattoos. 'She's a wellness guru apparently.' Kate was very happy to see her Traitors pal Charlotte and confessed that she hasn't seen anyone since filming the show earlier this year. She confessed: 'It was such a weird experience, it was so intense, wasn't it?' The journalist also asked how she was, to which Charlotte said: 'I'm good, I'm really good. 'I'm out here in Victoria Park in Cardiff it's a beautiful morning, I'm really happy to be here talking to you both.' Many took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts on Charlotte's choice of clothing Richard explained that Kate has been really good to not give away any spoilers from the show. And he was keen to know what it was like actually taking part. Charlotte said: 'I think that it's a very diff experience to how it is to watch it. 'It's intense. Yeah, but it was fun, it was fun and intense. 'That's it. I can't say anything else!' Taking issue with cryptic comments, one viewer complained: 'Why have Charlotte on if she's not allowed to talk about it? Absolute waste of time?' Richard - who has taken part in I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here - pointed out that during those kind of shows, you forget you're being filmed. Charlotte said: 'What I was taking away from it, it's so, it's immediately so iconic, The Traitors... 'You can forget you're being filmed.' 'It's different to those other shows. You definitely know you're on telly.' Back in April The Celebrity Traitors cast touched down at Inverness Airport to take part in the series. Celebrity Traitors stars Kate Garraway and Charlotte Church let slip show spoilers ahead of BBC reality show's launch
CELEBRITY Traitors stars Kate Garraway and Charlotte Church teased exciting BBC show spoilers in a live chat on Good Morning Britain. The co-stars were reunited via video link on the ITV daytime series, which Kate, 58, was fronting with Richard Madeley, 69. 6 6 6 It came after The Sun was the first to reveal the full Celebrity Traitors cast list back in April. Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, viewers are being treated to a mix of A-listers, popular actors, TV stars and singing icons as a spin-off series to the original Traitors. The celebrities will play the ultimate game of detection, backstabbing and trust, in the hope of winning a cash prize of up to £100K for a charity of their choice. Good Morning Britain favourite Kate - who took time off from the series to film The Traitors spin-off - couldn't hide her excitement for the chat with the opera singer, who was speaking from a park in Cardiff. Their close bond could suggest they were on the same team, either as Traitors or Faithfuls, as mum of two Kate admitted Charlotte, 39, "was a massive part of that for me." Richard attempted to probe into their experience on the show, which will air later this year. Yet Charlotte simply admitted: "It was intense and fun, and that's it." Richard then attempted to ask about filming, and if the stars "forgot" the cameras were there like he did during his short-lived I'm A Celeb experience. Charlotte said they were aware they were being filmed while they were taking on the challenges and calling out conduct around the round table. She added of the show: "Its become immediately so iconic you can't really forget you're being filmed. BBC confirms full Celebrity Traitors line up in first look picture & reveals when it'll hit screens "It's diff to those other shows, you do definitely remember you are on telly." Yet Kate then delved deeper into their experience - confirming there would be show Challenges just like the civilian version. She let slip: "Charlotte was extraordinary in those missions. "She was amazing, really amazing." Signing up to Celebrity Traitors is a step back into the public eye for the Welsh star, 39, who had stepped out of the limelight to open up a wellness retreat close to where she was brought up. Meanwhile, after a tough few years, insiders said Kate was chosen to take part in the show because of how popular she was among the public. Previously, host Claudia said of the Celebrity Traitors challenge: 'We're incredibly lucky these brilliant people have said yes. "I'd love to say we'll take it easy on them and they'll just wander round the castle and eat toast for a couple of weeks but that would be a lie.' ALL GO Meanwhile, in May we reported how Celebrity Traitors has been given the green light for a second season - despite the first not even making it to screens yet. A TV source told The Sun: 'The BBC has quietly ordered a second series of the celebrity spin-off, months before the first one airs this Autumn. "It just proves how confident they are that the celeb version is going to be a huge hit. "They haven't seen the viewer reaction yet but bosses have watched early edits of the first series now that filming has wrapped and it's exceeded all their wildest expectations. "They are thrilled with it and hastily commissioned another run. "The booker team are already at work scouting big showbiz names for the next line-up - they have set themselves the goal of booking even bigger A-listers than they got for the first series. "They have their work cut out for them but stars are clamouring to head to the castle, so it shouldn't be too difficult. "This is the show they all want to be on.' 6 6 6

Charlotte Church campaigns against ban on Palestine Action group
Charlotte Church campaigns against ban on Palestine Action group The Welsh singer said: "We will not be silenced" The Welsh singer has been calling for an immediate ceasefire on the Gaza strip (Image: Richard Swingler Photography ) Charlotte Church has joined hundreds of peace campaigners in opposing the ban on Palestine Action. The singer has called the ban an "abuse and misuse" of terrorism laws and signed a letter which describes the ban as "a major assault on our freedoms". The Welsh singer said the ban was an attempt to "silence movements" by branding them as extremists and terrorists, comparing the ban to what was seen with the suffragettes and civil rights protestors. Charlotte said: "I sign this letter because history shows us that when people stand up to injustice, those in power often reach for the same old playbook: label dissent as dangerous, criminalise protest, and try to silence movements for change by branding them as extremists or terrorists. "From the suffragettes to the civil rights movement, what was once condemned as radical disruption is now celebrated as moral courage. We must remember this pattern – and refuse to let our rights be eroded by fear. This is not new, and we will not be silenced. "By signing this letter I am not inviting support for any proscribed organisation – people can make their own minds up – but I am making a clear and strong stand against the abuse and misuse of terrorism laws to malign direct action protest." Palestine Action are a group who use direct action to target Israeli weapons factories in the the UK and their supply chain. Article continues below At the start of July plans to ban the group took effect after a legal challenge against their proscription failed. MPs overwhelmingly voted in favour of the ban. It puts the group in the same category as Islamic State, al-Qaida and the far-right group National Action. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here . As a result it is now a criminal offence to be a member of or support the group. Doing either will carry a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Wearing a T-shirt or badge with the group's name could also be punishable with up to six months in prison. Charlotte Church has been vocal in her criticism of the war in Gaza calling for an immediate ceasefire on several occasions. In March 2024, she led a 'Big Sing for Gaza' on the Barry Island Promenade which saw a choir singing "Let Gaza Live", kite flying, sand art and floral tributes. Article continues below At the weekend, 13 people were arrested outside the BBC Wales headquarters for showing support for the group under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and have since been released on police bail. On July 21, Palestine Action will apply for permission for a judicial review to quash the order.
