It's still good: 300 East

In a city that struggles to preserve its history, we feel a responsibility to highlight the spots that have grown alongside it. That's why we have an occasional series called "It's Still Good," where we spotlight tried-and-true, locally owned favorites. First up: 300 East. Located in a craftsman-style home in Dilworth, the nearly 40-year-old restaurant is reliably welcoming. Emphasis on reliability. It feels like a fixture — part of the city's fabric, past, present and (hopefully) future. Dig in: It's best known for its brunch menu, namely the breakfast pizza, as well as its desserts. Regulars will recommend the French onion soup and "The Usual," an open-faced chicken salad sandwich that has been on the menu since the restaurant was called "The White Horse." Flashback: The historic 1900-era Victorian home originally housed The White Horse restaurant. When Catherine Coulter bought the building in 1985, she relocated it down the street, according to the Charlotte Observer. Years later, Coulter reimaged the restaurant as it is today. Coulter's daughter, Ashley Boyd, grew up in that kitchen and is now the culinary director at 300 East. The vibe: The new American spot is consistently busy, but never feels rushed. Whether you're sitting on the patio or second-floor mezzanine, you'll feel like you're dining in your own home. If you go: Make sure to listen to the specials; that's where 300 East's menu shines. And leave room for dessert. Stop by: 300 East Blvd.

Squatter fatally shoots roommate over $250 rent feud: ‘Going to kill them all'

A squatter allegedly shot and killed his roommate after he was asked to pay just $250 in rent — shouting 'I'm going to kill them all,' as he marched towards the house, according to law enforcement officials. Angel Gomez Montanez, 21, paid no rent at a home outside of Houston, Texas, for over three months when his roommate Christopher Rodriguez Lara, 18, asked the delinquent to pony-up the paltry sum, KTRK reported. Angel Gomez Montanez, 21, allegedly shot and killed his roommate for asking for his portion of the rent — a paltry $250. Law and Crime The two got into an argument and then Montanez left the shared home with his belongings — only to return on June 12, saying he had the $250 for rent. Montanez insisted on handing the dough directly to the 18-year-old — and when Lara stepped outside, Montanez allegedly shot him on the spot and fled. A 9-year-old witness armed with a rock chased Montanez away, but hid when the crazed alleged gunman started walking back towards the home, the Charlotte Observer reported. 'I'm going to kill all of them,' Montanez said, the 9-year-old told investigators, according to that report. Montanez allegedly fired one more shot that investigators believe was aimed at Lara's brother. A bullet hole in the siding of the Houston-area home. ABC 7 'The only thing we told him is we needed the money for rent,' Zulekya Ortiz, who said Montanez had been living in her family home for the three months span, told the outlet. 'He was the happiness in this home,' Ortiz said of Lara, her brother-in-law. 'My children loved him.' Montanez was arrested on June 15 and is being charged with murder, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Chuba Hubbard: Panthers' goal this year is winning the Super Bowl

Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard has played his entire four-year career in Carolina, and he has yet to play on a winning team. As he heads into Year Five, he's eager to change that. Hubbard told Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer that the Panthers have assembled a team that can realistically think about a championship. 'If the goal isn't to make the playoffs and win a Super Bowl,' Hubbard said, 'you're selling yourself short. So that's always been the goal. That's the goal this year. And I think we're the closest we've ever been.' Hubbard said players like him who have been around during some tough seasons know it's past time to turn things around. 'I think guys are finally sick of being the same ol', same ol' Carolina Panthers,' he said. 'I think we want to get back to what they did here in the past, in 2015 [when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl] and some of those other years when they had deep playoff runs and had the crowd involved and the city hyped up. We haven't had that.' They're long shots this year, but after an ugly start to last season, the Panthers turned things around down the stretch, going a respectable 4-5 in their last nine games and playing well in some of their losses, including going down to the wire against both of last year's Super Bowl teams, the Chiefs and Eagles. Hubbard thinks that for the first time, he's on a team that might be close to something special.
