Chen Jie guns for glory at Asian meet after breaking national mark

PETALING JAYA: National rifle shooter Gan Chen Jie is gearing up for the Asian Championships in Kazakhstan from Aug 16-30 with confidence after a stellar show at the recently concluded Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy. The 20-year-old fired down two gold medals in the 10m air rifle on Friday and 50m rifle three position on Thursday at the National Shooting Range in Subang Jaya but it was her performance in the shorter distance that won admiration. She shattered the national record in the qualifying event with a score of 627.3 points, surpassing the previous mark of 627.0 set by Shahera Rahim Raja in 2019. In the thrilling final, she scored 246.5 points to edge out Perak's Nor Ayla Aqila Mahathir (245.7). In the 50m rifle three positions, she amassed 445.8 to comfortably finish ahead of Alia Husna Budruddin (438.5) and veteran Nur Suryani Taibi (426.4). 'I'm truly honoured and grateful to break both the senior and junior (rewrote her own mark of 626.9) national records in the 10m air rifle event,' said an elated Chen Jie. 'The achievement in the Tun Tan Siew Sin Trophy gives me extra motivation to keep improving and stay focused on my goals,' said the Sarawak Malaysia Games (Sukma) seven-gold medal winner. 'I know there's still a long way to go, but I'm ready to keep pushing.' Besides the Asian meet, Chen Jie is also to qualify for this year's SEA Games in Thailand. 'I hope I can stay on the right track and maintain this momentum all the way to qualify for the SEA Games.' 'It's all about consistency, and I also try to handle the pressure by focusing in the process rather than comparing myself to others.' MEN 10m air pistol Individual : 1. DeepSeek spurs embrace of open-source AI ecosystem at Shanghai industry event

Shanghai is vying to create its own open-source artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, as the success of DeepSeek models have reshaped the landscape of the global AI competition. At the Global Developer Conference, an AI community event hosted in Shanghai over the weekend, open-source developers from around China congregated in a show of exuberance over the possibilities of AI since DeepSeek's resource-efficient models captured the world's imagination. Use cases on display included everything from robotics to virtual reality glasses. "We will further improve the open-source ecosystem, strengthen the service system for open data and open models, and continue building the open-source community," Shanghai Vice-Mayor Chen Jie said on Saturday at the opening ceremony of the three-day event, which started on Friday. The value of Shanghai's AI industry surpassed 450 billion yuan (US$62 billion) in 2024, according to Chen, with 60 major models registered with the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC). China requires that AI models be registered with the internet regulator before public release. The CAC had approved a total of 302 generative AI services by the end of last year. Photo: Handout> Xiong Jijun, a vice-minister in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, also spoke at the event, emphasising the importance of open-source initiatives. "We support the development of open-source communities built on openness, co-creation, sharing and collaborative governance," he said. Open source was a central theme of the conference, which marked the first major industry gathering since the rapid rise of DeepSeek's open-source large language models V3 and R1 in December and January. On Friday, the Hangzhou-based start-up said it would open five code repositories to the public. "As part of the open-source community, we believe that every line shared becomes collective momentum that accelerates the journey," the company wrote on X. The open-source nature of DeepSeek's models contributed to their rapid adoption by developers, cloud providers and other industry players. At the expo, many developers at companies from gadget makers to infrastructure providers expressed support for or plans to adopt DeepSeek's models. While DeepSeek's name was widely invoked at the conference, the company did not publicly participate. Spurred by DeepSeek's success, Shanghai-based AI developer Stepfun recently open-sourced two multimodal models - one for text-to-video generation and another for voice interactions. It also unveiled a plan to release an image-to-video model in March. Jiang Daxin, CEO and founder of Shanghai-based AI start-up StepFun, expects growth in AI agents as models become stronger in reasoning. Photo: Handout> Stepfun founder and CEO Jiang Daxin said at the event that there would be more opportunities for AI agents, which are typically domain-specific intelligent bots, as models gain stronger multimodal and reasoning capabilities. "Currently, closed-source models still dominate the large language model market, but that will change significantly in the near future," said Harry Shum Heung-yeung, a long-time researcher at Microsoft and council chairman of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. "I believe China has transitioned from being a beneficiary of open-source to a contributor," he added, calling for more training data to be open-sourced. Qi Yuan, director of the Shanghai Academy of AI for Science and chair professor at Fudan University, called DeepSeek a "victory for open-source" and an example of "inclusive intelligence". The R1 model demonstrated strong reasoning capabilities with limited computing power, he said, and open-sourcing has sped up adoption of the technology, making it easier to gain trust. Qi also emphasised that scientific AI development requires more open collaboration across disciplines.
