Indian Railways tests nation's first hydrogen-powered locomotive
Indian Railways has successfully tested a hydrogen-powered locomotive, the nation's first such initiative, at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Vaishnaw announced the milestone on social media, stating: 'First hydrogen-powered coach (Driving Power Car) successfully tested at ICF, Chennai. 'India is developing a 1,200HP hydrogen train. This will place India among the leaders in hydrogen-powered train technology.' The hydrogen locomotive is a key part of Indian Railways' 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, which aims to deploy 35 hydrogen-powered trains on heritage and hill routes across the country. The estimated cost for each train is approximately Rs800m ($9.24m), with an additional Rs700m required for supporting ground infrastructure per route. Indian Railways has embarked on a pilot project to retrofit an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) with a hydrogen fuel cell. The initiative, which encompasses the establishment of ground infrastructure, is being executed with an investment of Rs1.1bn and is scheduled to operate along the Jind–Sonipat route within the Northern Railway network. Initial assessments indicate that running hydrogen-fuelled trains in India may incur greater expenses, but these costs are anticipated to fall as the number of hydrogen-powered trains increases. The use of hydrogen as a fuel is a key component of India's strategy to shift towards cleaner energy, given its advantage of producing no carbon emissions. Indian Railways has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) to implement an AI-based train safety system. This system aims to enhance the monitoring of rolling stock health, signalling a move towards advanced technology integration for service efficiency and maintenance automation. India's first hydrogen-powered train coach successfully tested at ICF Chennai: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw
New Delhi: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday announced that the Indian Railways has successfully tested the country's First hydrogen-powered coach at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. According to the minister's social media X post, the country is working on a 1,200 horsepower hydrogen train, which will help India to place itself amongst the leaders in hydrogen-powered train technology. "First Hydrogen powered coach (Driving Power Car) successfully tested at ICF, Chennai. India is developing 1,200 HP Hydrogen train. This will place India among the leaders in Hydrogen powered train technology," Vaishnaw posted on 'X'. In 2023, Vaishnaw informed Rajya Sabha that Indian Railways has envisaged running 35 Hydrogen trains under "Hydrogen for Heritage" at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore per train and ground infrastructure of Rs 70 crore per route on various heritage and hill routes. Additionally, the Indian Railways has also awarded a pilot project for retrofitment of a Hydrogen Fuel cell on an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake along with ground infrastructure at the cost of Rs 111.83 crores, which is planned to be run on the Jind -Sonipat section of Northern Railway. The running cost of a Hydrogen fuel-based train is not established in IR scenario. It is estimated that the initial running cost of the Hydrogen fuel train set will be higher, which will subsequently reduce with an increase in the number of trains. Further, the use of Hydrogen as fuel provides larger benefits in the direction of green transportation technology to support zero carbon emission goals as a clean energy source. Last year, in a significant step towards promoting sustainable transportation solutions, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, showcased India's advancements in green hydrogen mobility by demonstrating a hydrogen-fuelled bus powered by India's oil PSU Indian Oil to the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Shri Tshering Tobgay and his delegation.

Liam Dawson is more accurate and offered more challenge, says Nasser Hussain
Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes if Liam Dawson ends up having a good series against India, then there is a strong chance he heads to Australia for the Ashes as the side's No 1 spinner ahead of Shoaib Bashir. Dawson on Wednesday played his first Test match in eight years – with his previous game being the one against Chennai in 2016 and picked the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal off the seventh delivery he bowled on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. On another see-saw day of Test cricket between both these teams, one aspect that stood out about Dawson was his control. In the previous three Tests, India batsmen have chosen to be aggressive against off-spinner Bashir who was ruled out of the series with a finger injury. And unlike the young spiner, the 35-year-old left-arm spinner Dawson bowled a bit quicker, giving less air time for the batsmen to step out. With his trajectory, he ensured batsmen mostly played from the crease as he used the rough outside the left-hander's off-stump to good effect. Writing in The Daily Mail, Hussain was all praise for Dawson. 'On the first day at Old Trafford, when it's not spinning a lot, you need to offer your team and your captain that control so that he can rotate the seamers at the other end. Dawson did that beautifully. India's run rate dropped in the second session because of his control,' Hussain wrote of the second session in which India lost the wickets of KL Rahul, Jaiswal and Shumban Gill and scored 71 runs in 26 overs. Compared to the tall Bashir who gets more turn and bounce, Dawson with his flat trajectory still managed to get good purchase of the Manchester strip, with Hussain mentioning what worked for him. 'He is more accurate and challenges the pad of the right hander, as well as the outside edge of the left hander from that rough and with the drift that he gets. We saw that with his wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Because Dawson is landing it in the rough all the time, Jaiswal didn't know if it was going to spin or not, and his natural variation and drift meant he took the outside edge and it carried to Harry Brook at first slip,' Hussain wrote. Given the start he has had to the Test series on return, Hussain says if Dawson ends up having a good outing, then it could push Bashir to the bench in the Ashes. 'If Dawson has two really good games against India, the debate will be about whether he should become England's No1 spinner and play against Australia. But that's for another time. He's had one good day and he's got one wicket – but he did his role and that's all you can ask of anyone you bring into your team,' he wrote.

'Karuppu' teaser out: Suriya unites with RJ Balaji for an adrenaline-packed actioner
The makers of actor Suriya's latest movie Karuppu released a teaser and posters on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Going by the looks of it, the movie promises an action-packed ride. Directed by stand-up comedian-turned-filmmaker RJ Balaji — who rose to fame with prank calls and witty movie reviews on FM radio — Karuppu marks his first collaboration with Suriya, who is fresh off the success of Retro. The movie stars Trisha Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam and the Malayalam stars Indrans and Swasika. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu has Sai Abhyankkar composing its music, a relative newbie in the film industry. He shot to fame with the indie breakout number Katchi sera and followed it up with the chartbuster Aasai kooda. Talking about uncharted territories, the action genre is new for Balaji, too, whose filmography comprises the political satire LKG; the fantasy comedy Mookkuththi Amman; and Veetla Visesham, a remake of the Bollywood dramedy Badhaai Ho. Yet, Balaji promises an action flick that might be what fans of Suriya ordered. In Karuppu, he plays a lawyer by day and a vigilante at dusk, avatars that might be apt crowd pleasers. The teaser is full of meta references: Suriya introduces himself as Saravanan, his real name. The stylish finger gesture from Ghajini is back, and his role as barrister harks back to his role in the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim. There is also a reference to Rajinikanth's cult classic Baasha, when he leans on a table confidently and says he has another name — a line that occupies prime space in Tamil pop culture. Actor Dulquer Salmaan released the teaser's Malayalam version on social media. GK Vishnu is the movie's cinematographer, while R Kalaivanan is its editor. Suriya was last seen in the action thriller Retro, directed by Karthik Subburaj. The movie was a hit at the box office, erasing memories of his earlier movie Kanguvaa, also starring Disha Patani, that was critically panned. Trisha Krishnan's previous movie was Mani Ratnam's Thug Life.
