Indigo's small flights to depart from T4 from today
Chennai: Indigo Airlines' ATR flights (smaller flights) will hereafter depart from domestic terminal 4 (T4) at Chennai Airport, instead of terminal 1 (T1). Airport authorities have deployed buggies to assist passengers who mistakenly arrive at T1. The move is to facilitate crucial upgrade work on the taxiways that connect T1 to the main runway. AAI sources said, Indigo's A320 flights will continue to arrive and depart from T1. ATR flights, which operate to destinations such as Trichy, Tuticorin, Madurai, Mysore, Vijayawada, Salem, and Rajahmundry from Chennai, will arrive at T1 and move to T4 for their next departure after the flyers alight. Until now, only Air India and Air India Express flights have been operated from T4. "This is to minimise disruptions and reduce the inconvenience to the passengers," said airport officials. The existing check-in counters and self-baggage drop kiosks at T4 are sufficient, negating the need for additional remote boarding gates, added officials. Anticipating that some passengers may mistakenly arrive at T1 for their ATR flights, airport authorities have deployed buggies to ferry them to T4. "For the first few days, passengers may need assistance as many may not have noticed intimation by the airlines or by AAI about the change of terminal," officials said. "Though there is a walkalator connecting the 1 km stretch between the two terminals, buggies will help passengers reach T4 quickly," he said.

Air India Express Flight From Singapore Aborts Landing At Chennai Airport Due To Crosswinds
Last Updated: The incident happened at the St. Thomas Mount end of the runway, a location already under scrutiny. An Air India Express flight from Singapore carrying around 180 passengers narrowly avoided a serious incident on Wednesday morning after the pilots were forced to abort the landing at Chennai Airport due to crosswinds and an unstable approach. As per Telegraph India, the aircraft, which was expected to land at 10:15 am, instead had to circle the airport and make a second attempt, finally touching down safely after a 30-minute delay. What Went Wrong? According to aviation authorities, the approach was not stable — meaning the aircraft wasn't in the right position or speed for a safe landing. A sudden change in wind speed and a steep descent added to the challenge. Officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) confirmed that the incident occurred on the St. Thomas Mount side of the runway. 'A safe landing needs proper speed, descent rate, and alignment. This flight had a steep approach and faced strong crosswinds," a source told The Times of India. The pilots followed standard procedure by performing a go-around — an aviation term for aborting a landing and trying again. Thanks to their quick decision-making, all passengers were safe and the aircraft landed without any incident on the second attempt. Airport authorities stated that the decision to abort the initial landing was a precautionary measure. In March 2025, an IndiGo Airbus A321 arriving from Mumbai suffered tail damage while landing. In October 2024, another IndiGo flight from Jaipur was forced to perform a touch-and-go due to similar wind and alignment problems. First Published: May 29, 2025, 09:29 IST

Celebi Aviation's brief stint at Chennai airport ends as India revokes clearance
CHENNAI: Çelebi Aviation's short-lived tenure at Chennai International Airport has come to an abrupt end after India revoked the Turkish operator's clearance, citing national security concerns linked to Ankara's growing defence ties with Pakistan. The decision by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) takes immediate effect and forces Çelebi to suspend all ground handling activities at Chennai Airport. Çelebi, which commenced operations at the airport just 20 months ago, had provided ground handling services for several foreign and regional carriers, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Scoot, Royal Brunei, SpiceJet and US-Bangla Airlines. "The revocation won't impact ground handling operations," a spokesperson for Chennai Airport said, adding domestic service providers had already been mobilised to fill the gap in critical areas such as baggage handling, ramp operations and cargo logistics. The officials said the cancellation of four domestic flights is not related to termination of Çelebi's services. Two Indian firms - Bird Airport Services (Chennai) Pvt Ltd and AI Airport Services Ltd (AIASL) - are expected to absorb Çelebi's workload. From 2010 to 2020, ground handling in Chennai was managed by Bhadra International under a decade-long licence from the Airports Authority of India (AAI). AIASL, a state-run subsidiary of Air India, stepped in temporarily in July 2021 to stabilise operations. By 2023, AAI brought in Bird as well.

BJP Chief JP Nadda's Bulletproof Vehicle Halts After Close Call in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: A bullet-resistant vehicle carrying Union Health Minister and BJP National President J.P. Nadda was forced to halt on Saturday evening due to technical concerns while returning from Vellore to Chennai Airport, the Tamil Nadu police DGP office clarified in an official statement issued on Tuesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The incident occurred near Thirumudivakkam on the Vandalur-Minjur Outer Ring Road within Tambaram City limits, around 7.30 pm. No injuries were reported, and the minister was safely escorted to the airport in an alternative vehicle as per protocol. J.P. Nadda, who is provided 'Z+' security with cover, was visiting Chennai on May 2 and attended the sixth Saiva Siddhanta Conference at SRM University before proceeding to the Golden Temple in Vellore. A security convoy comprising bullet-resistant vehicles, escort vehicles for CRPF and police personnel, a protocol vehicle, and an ambulance was arranged. According to police sources, the bulletproof vehicle—manufactured in Union govt-approved workshops—began to emit unusual friction noise from its rear wheels while being driven at speeds exceeding 120 km/hr. This was reportedly due to pressure from the minister's personal assistant who urged CRPF personnel to increase the convoy's speed despite the technical limitations of such heavily armoured vehicles. Noting the abnormal noise, the driver reduced speed and safely pulled the vehicle over to the roadside. The Union Minister was quickly transferred to another vehicle, and the journey to Chennai Airport resumed without further incident. Authorities confirmed that the bulletproof car was undamaged and there was no compromise to the Minister's safety. However, a minor collision occurred when a police escort vehicle in the tenth position collided with another vehicle in the eighth position, which was carrying the Minister's belongings. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The damage was minimal, and no injuries were reported. Following the incident, Tamil Nadu Police issued instructions to all personnel and accompanying staff not to exceed the designated speed limits of bulletproof vehicles. Officials emphasised that the state's bulletproof fleet is well-maintained and regularly deployed to neighbouring states during VVIP visits. The incident did not affect the Union Minister's scheduled departure to Delhi, and he boarded his flight as planned.
