Natalie Palamides' solo show WEER will reopen the Cherry Lane Theatre

The latest in the spate of cross-over hits to have started their life at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, A24 will produce the American premiere of Natalie Palamides' one-woman show, WEER. The four-week engagement will be the first long-run program at the historic Cherry Lane Theatre, which will reopen in September after being dark for two years. Tickets are on sale now at or at the theatre's box office, newly reopened today. In WEER, the award-winning clown-comedienne plays both sides of a dueling Gen X couple – literally: one half of her body the man; the other, the woman. Reviewing its Fringe debut last year, Time Out's Andrzej Lukowski called the 'gloriously ridiculous '90s rom com' a 'virtuoso piece of batshittery from Palamides.' Palamides writes, directs and performs in the show, describing it as, New Years Eve 1999. Star Crossed Lovers. A Quarrel at the strike of midnight. Expect to see split-in-half wigs, costumes and fake chest hair in the 'hysterically funny but weirdly poignant hour.' Opening night is set for September 28, with performances scheduled through October 19. Tickets range from $30–$109 and are available now at though there'll also be A$24 rush ticket deal for every performance (more than one ticket available per show, but how could we resist the nod?). Palamides hit the indie mainstream when Netflix picked up her sell-out special Nate for distribution. The Pittsburgh native has won a slew of Edinburgh awards, which makes New York theater the next logical stage to conquer. Tucked in Manhattan's West Village since 1817, when it went up as a farm silo before finding new lives as a brewery, box factory and gay bar, the intimate theater has seen some of the greatest theatrical talents premiere works by the likes of Edward Albee and Tennessee Williams. Indie film company A24 purchased it in 2023, and will present theatrical productions, stand-up comedy, staged readings, film screenings and other special events in the 166-seat venue, which now includes a new bar and restaurant from the Frenchette team. A screening series helmed by Sofia Coppola will begin on Sunday, September 14, followed by an inaugural block party.

Sofia Coppola to host Sunday night film series at A24's new movie theater this summer

The Cherry Lane Theatre, an intimate space tucked in Manhattan's West Village—which has also been a brewery, a silo, a box factory and a gay bar— will reopen this September under the leadership of indie film studio A24. Though it will officially reopen on Monday, September 8, the first announced event will be held on the following Sunday, September 14, with the first installment of a new screening series called Sundays with Sofia, hosted by New York-born filmmaker Sofia Coppola. The writer-director, an Oscar winner for the seminal 2003 film Lost in Translation, will present and discuss some of the movies most important to her, beginning with Adrian Lyne's Foxes. (The cult 1980 coming-of-age drama, starring Jodie Foster, focuses on a group of teenage girls in Los Angeles, familiar territory for fans of Coppola's gorgeous variations on this theme.) The 167-venue will then empty out onto the precious Commerce Street for a block party after the screening. Coppola's last two films, On the Rocks (2020) and Priscilla (2023), were made by A24, and though the company did not produce The Bling Ring (2013), it was the fourth movie it ever distributed. The indie wunderkind is expected to loop in many of its returning talents to Cherry Lane's programming. A24 purchased the historic space in 2023, and it has remained shut since. But the company has announced that it will present theatrical productions, stand-up comedy, staged readings, film screenings and other special events. They've also outfitted it with a new bar and restaurant (from the Frenchette team) and concessions booth with merchandise and snacks. A special message recorded by Barbra Streisand, who had a backstage job there in the 1950s, will welcome audiences. The building first went up as a farm silo in 1817, before a group of people (including famed candle-burner Edna St. Vincent Millay) turned it into a playhouse. It is the oldest continuously running off-Broadway theater in New York and is often credited with making off-Broadway a thing. Edward Albee debuted a number of works there, with works by dramatic heavyweights like Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry and Sam Shephard also playing at the small venue. Titans from other disciplines also tried their hand at theater there, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Pablo Picasso and Gertude Stein, and Bob Dylan performed concerts there.

Frenchette Team Is Opening a Restaurant Inside A24's West Village Theater

Historic New York City theater Cherry Lane Theatre is getting ready to reopen — now in the hands of film studio A24, behind recent films like the Materialists and Babygirl . The intent, according to news that first circulated in 2023 about the company purchasing the theater, was to turn it into a clubhouse of sorts for events, performances, as well as film screenings. A cool concession stand would make sense at any new theater, especially one with as savvy a marketing team as the one at A24. This year, A24 released its own line of chocolate bars — the synergy is already there. Community board filings show that the film studio is taking it a step further, working to open a lobby restaurant and bar. It appears to be in collaboration with Galactus Group LLC, affiliated with Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson, two of New York's biggest restaurateurs, known for Frenchette, Le Rock, and most recently, Le Veau D'Or. The latter in particular showcases their commitment to honoring a space's past, where they relaunched one of the oldest French bistros in New York. It wouldn't be the team's first time working in a cultural center, either: they also opened Frenchette Bakery inside the Whitney Museum. A source close to the restaurant confirmed that the project — a new hospitality concept — is underway and looking at a fall opening. A 2023 liquor authority application for the Cherry Lane Theatre listed the dining room seat count at around 60. The theater, located at 38 Commerce Street, has seemingly never had a restaurant, but the space dates back to 1923. It was once known for its counterculture, off-Broadway plays, and has hosted performances from playwrights to musicians and writers — such as Bob Dylan, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sam Shepard, and David Mamet — but it struggled in its later life. With in-person film attendance dwindling in recent years, others in the industry have made attempts to restore these sacred entertainment spaces. In 2023, Eater LA reported on director Quentin Tarantino's new cafe inside his Vista Theater. That same year, Netflix announced it had purchased the Paris Theater in Midtown. Most recently, HBO's John Wilson is opening Low Cinema in Ridgewood. Eater has reached out to Hanson and Nasr's team and A24, but did not hear back before publishing.
