Chhattisgarh: 2 Congress leaders arrested for obscene posts on PM, Op Sindoor

RAIPUR: Two Chhattisgarh Congress leaders, including a former MLA, Arun Tiwari, were booked in two districts for allegedly posting objectionable content on social media targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Operation Sindoor. Police said that Tiwari shared a Facebook post laced with objectionable language aimed at the Prime Minister and Operation Sindoor. The post triggered strong reactions from political and social groups, who lodged a formal complaint at the Civil Lines police station in Bilaspur, police said. 'Following the complaint, the Civil Lines police began a preliminary investigation under relevant sections of the IT Act and the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita,' said Inspector General of Police, Bilaspur range, Sanjeev Shukla. Officials said that the allegations appeared to be prima facie valid during the inquiry. 'On Wednesday, a team from Ratanpur police station conducted a raid at Tiwari's farmhouse in Ratanpur and he was later handed over to the Civil Lines police for further legal action,' said the IG. The language of content posted was extremely objectionable, said the IG. In the second case, senior Congress leader Brijmohan Singh was booked in Durg. Based on a complaint filed by BJP leader Tushar Dewangan, an FIR was registered against Singh at the Vaishali Nagar police station in Bhilai. 'We investigated the matter based on the complaint. The allegations were found to be true, and an FIR was registered under relevant sections. The accused has been arrested, and further legal proceedings are underway,' said city superintendent of police, Satya Prakash Tiwari. According to police, they have been charged with sections 296 (obscene acts and songs in public places) and 353 (statements that conduce to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections of the Information Technology Act.

BJP govt harassing traders through GST department, says Cong on raids

Raipur: The Congress party condemned the alleged harassment of traders in Ambikapur and the entire Surguja division under the guise of GST operations and raids. Chhattisgarh Congress communication department head, Sushil Anand Shukla, said that the BJP govt is persecuting traders. He highlighted that the govt conducted continuous GST raids on businesses for the past 18 months. He further criticised the govt's earlier decision to withdraw the e-way bill exemption. Shukla accused the Sai govt of treating ordinary traders, who are major contributors to the state's revenue collection, like "thieves and dacoits". He pointed out that while unemployment rose, incomes decreased, and the purchasing power of the common public declined under the BJP govt, an 18% historic increase in GST collection is proof that the govt is mercilessly collecting taxes from the common people. Traders staged a protest and downed shutters on Sunday against the state GST raids at several business establishments in Ambikapur, the divisional headquarters of Surguja.

Killing top Maoists like Basavaraju will hobble extremism, increasing prosperity will finish it The killing of top Maoist leader Basavaraju in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday is a morale booster for security forces and leaves Naxals on the backfoot. Basavaraju, as Amit Shah pointed out on X, is the highest ranking Naxal neutralised in over three decades of operations. He was allegedly the mastermind of the April 2010 Dantewada ambush in which 75 CRPF personnel were killed, and also the 2013 Jhiram Ghati massacre in which most of Chhattisgarh Congress's top leadership was wiped out. Since 2017-18, he had led CPI(Maoist) as its general secretary, and carried a ₹1cr bounty on his head. By eliminating Basavaraju, GOI has taken a giant stride towards its goal of ridding the country of Naxalism by March 31 next year. The fact that this successful operation – in which 26 other Maoists were killed – was carried out close on the heels of the 21-day Operation Black Forest that resulted in the arrest of 54 Naxals and the surrender of 84 others, shows the increasing momentum of govt's assault on the last strongholds of Naxals. Last month, Shah had said the total number of Naxal-affected districts had reduced to 18 across seven states, from 38 in nine states earlier. And almost 90% of Naxal violence is now concentrated in six districts across four states. For years, Naxal or 'Left Wing Extremist' (LWE) violence has been considered as India's biggest internal security challenge – bigger than Kashmir – and Shah had acknowledged this in an interview to India Today recently. Back in 2006, Manmohan Singh had also said as much: 'It would not be an exaggeration to say that the problem of Naxalism is the single biggest internal security challenge ever faced by our country.' At that time, the number of Naxal-affected districts was 160. It had blocked investments and held up development, perpetuating the backwardness of these regions. Now, as the threat abates, govt must fast-track development to ensure Maoists find no takers for their violent ideology. While Shah recently said, 'Disgruntlement over the lack of development could be seen as a cause of Naxalism', Singh's diagnosis was similar: 'Exploitation…iniquitous socio-political circumstances, inadequate employment opportunities…lack of land reforms – all contribute significantly to the growth of the Naxalite movement.' It's not surprising that Naxalism's retreat has coincided with India's rapid economic growth. While guns will silence old ideologues, only prosperity will shut down the nursery of violence. ‘Commission walk a way to siphon money; build flyover'

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Congress has criticised the state govt's decision to reconstruct the 'controversial' skywalk in the state capital, a day after the govt announced it would resume work on the unfinished project. The Opposition has stated that instead of spending money on the incomplete skywalk, the govt should construct a flyover in line with public demand. State Congress President Deepak Baij launched an attack on the BJP and former minister Rajesh Munat over the skywalk. He said, "This is not a skywalk, it's a commission walk. The number of pedestrians in the city is steadily decreasing. What's needed is a flyover, not a skywalk. This was merely a means to siphon off money." City's traffic is increasing and it needs a flyover, not a skywalk, Baij told TOI. "A flyover would help address current and future traffic problems effectively. The city's residents, including intellectuals, traders, doctors, and people from all walks of life were opposed to the skywalk project from the beginning. Now that the govt has decided to rebuild the incomplete skywalk, the public is once again reacting negatively. The govt should reconsider its decision and plan to construct a flyover in line with the city's future needs," said Congress spokesperson Dhananjay Singh Thakur on the matter. The spokesperson said the initial tender for the skywalk was issued for approximately Rs 37 crore. Just one and a half months after construction began, the tender amount was increased, eventually reaching around Rs 67 crore. Meanwhile, Raipur West MLA Rajesh Munat criticised the Congress party, accusing them of obstructing development work during their regime. He held the previous Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress govt responsible for any increase in the skywalk project's cost. During their tenure, the previous Congress govt had cited allegations of procedural irregularities and concerns over its utility, structural integrity. Subsequent investigations by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) were initiated to examine these issues. A more recent inspection by PWD officials revealed that ACP sheets, aluminium frames, and divider railings have been stolen from several places on the bridge. The steel and nut bolts installed in the bridge are intact. The work on welding, painting, flooring, hood, and flooring fixing is incomplete. Several parts have also rusted due to rain and heat.

He argued that this investment will bring no real benefit, as the skywalk is impractical for the city. Thakur further said that the government and BJP leaders should address the city's actual needs and work with a solid plan to avoid any future problems. He asserted that traffic congestion has become a major problem in the city, and the skywalk is not the solution. He concluded that it would be better to abandon the insistence on building the skywalk and instead plan for the construction of a flyover.
