Litti-chokha: From roadside flame to global fame

1 2 Patna: When one speaks of Bihar's street food heritage, no dish commands more reverence, or appetite, than the deceptively modest litti-chokha . Unassuming in appearance, yet rich in tradition and flavour, it has risen from rustic origins to become the state's most iconic culinary ambassador. It would hardly be an exaggeration to say that litti-chokha has carried Bihar's name to the national, and indeed international, stage. Wholesome, hearty and uniquely satisfying, this simple delicacy continues to win hearts and palates across social divides, drawing everyone from the political elite to global diplomats and film stars into its irresistible orbit. Not only is it celebrated for its nutritional virtues, but litti-chokha is beloved for its earthy, smoky flavour – a taste that lingers long after the last bite. So magnetic is its charm, that even visiting dignitaries make time for a plateful. Take, for instance, the latest admirer – Japan's ambassador to India, ONO Keiichi. On a recent visit to Patna, he took a detour from diplomatic duties to sample Bihar's famed delight, and promptly declared his approval on social media platform X. With a flair that delighted locals, he posted in cheerful Bhojpuri: "Namaste, Bihar! Finally had the chance to try the world-famous Litti Chokha – Gajab Swad Ba!" The sentiment was shared by Bollywood's finest. From Aamir Khan, who famously stopped at a roadside stall during his visits in 2012 and again in 2014 while promoting PK, to Kartik Aaryan and the most recent fan, Vicky Kaushal, the list of celebrity litti-chokha lovers keeps growing. Indeed, it was Aamir Khan, the meticulous "Mr Perfectionist" himself, who is often credited with catapulting litti-chokha into mainstream culinary fame. His pit stops in Patna became instant legends and suddenly, litti-chokha was no longer just street fare, it was a rite of passage for any celebrity entering the city. Kartik Aaryan followed suit in Nov 2024, stopping by a street vendor during promotions for 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.0'. Photographs of him savouring a heaped plate of litti-chokha went viral, spreading the dish's fame across both social and traditional media. And when Vicky Kaushal arrived in the city on Feb 8 this year to promote Chhava, he knew exactly what was on the menu. "How can I miss litti chokha when in Patna," he said. But what makes this dish such a standout? At its core, litti is made from wheat flour dough, stuffed with sattu, roasted gram flour, and seasoned with ginger, garlic and green chilli paste. It is then baked over coals and doused in fragrant ghee. The chokha is a mashed medley of potatoes, tomatoes, brinjal and onions, spiced and blended with the same robust paste. Served with fresh chutney and salad, it is both a flavour bomb and a tribute to rustic ingenuity. Manish Kumar, a seasoned litti-chokha vendor, said the dish's strength lies in its simplicity and honest preparation. "We use hot water and milk to ready the wheat dough to obtain soft-textured litti," he said. "Pure ghee is applied before serving the same. For the stuffing made of sattu, the well-balanced ginger, garlic and green chillies paste does the trick. And the 'chokha', made of potatoes, brinjal, tomatoes, is also spiced up with the said paste and offered with chutney and salad."

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The source added, 'Sanjay Leela Bhansali is self-funding the film and was reworking on the budget to ensure that he meets the deadlines. It's a period film and needs right costing to make things work. SLB has now procured required funds and is restarting the shoot sans a delay of 2 months.' The anticipation builds for Sanjay Leela Bhansalis next Love & War. It's thrilling to look forward to the monumental collaboration of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the talented trio of Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal on the big screen in the film. With his recent film Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal has delivered a blockbuster and his next is one of the most awaited films of next year, Love And War. The film already seemed exciting due to the association of these stalwarts. Does the boost in Vicky Kaushal's star power post-Chhaava further enhance the hype of this film? Trade experts are confident that Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt-Vicky Kaushal's Love And War is now a much bigger film after the blockbuster success of Chhava. Trade veteran Taran Adarsh began by saying, 'Sanjay Leela Bhansali and S S Rajamouli are the best filmmakers that we have today. Hence, Love And War will be huge.' He then stated, 'The acceptability is there (for Vicky Kaushal) and you need that mass support which this film has given him. For instance, Ranbir Kapoor is also a fantastic actor but a film like Rockstar (2011) would not give him that reach like Animal would.'

Bollywood movie review: Chhaava

Bloody tale of valour Based on Shivaji Sawant's celebrated novel Chhava , the film Chhaava brings to life the extraordinary journey of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant Maratha warrior who succeeded his legendary father, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. A fearless ruler and a master of guerrilla warfare, Sambhaji carried forward the dream of a united kingdom leaving an indelible mark on history, furthering the unfinished task of Swaraj left behind by his illustrious father. Sambhaji Maharaj's unmatched bravery earned him the title Chhaava , meaning 'lion cub' in Marathi. His legendary battle with a lion, which he fought barehanded, has also been depicted in the film – though with creative liberty. Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava features Vicky Kaushal in the lead role, bringing Sambhaji Maharaj's courage and resilience to the screen. Rashmika Mandanna portrays Maharani Yesubai, Sambhaji's devoted wife, while Akshaye Khanna delivers a compelling performance as the formidable Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Diana Penty plays Zinat-un-Nissa Begum, Aurangzeb's daughter, in a role that did have potential for more depth. The film does justice to the guerrilla warfare tactics employed by the Marathas – an aspect often read about but rarely seen in cinematic grandeur. The high-octane battle sequences are among the film's biggest highlights, making it a must-watch on the big screen for audiences of all ages. The film opens with the demise of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, an event that shakes the Maratha Empire to its core. As his successor, Sambhaji wastes no time asserting his strength, leading a bold assault on Burhanpur, one of the Mughals' strongest forts. Enraged by this challenge, Aurangzeb sees it as an opportunity to annihilate the Marathas once and for all. However, Sambhaji's unparalleled battle strategies keep the mighty Mughal empire on edge. Just when victory seems within reach, betrayal from within changes the course of history. Captured by his enemies, Sambhaji Maharaj faces inhumane torture, refusing to surrender his pride and principles. His final moments are heart-wrenching, showcasing his unwavering spirit in the face of unimaginable brutality. Lead actor Vicky Kaushal delivers one of his career's most intense performances, fully embodying the character of Sambhaji Maharaj. His powerful screen presence, fierce dialogue delivery, and emotionally charged moments, especially in the climax, make for a gripping watch. Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, too, portrays a calm yet menacing emperor, blending cruelty with a composed demeanour. His character, however, could have been given more screen time and depth, though he delivers an impactful performance. Rashmika Mandanna, in a limited role as Maharani Yesubai, brings sincerity and grace to her performance. Meanwhile, Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, and Vineet Kumar Singh shine in their supporting roles, adding depth to the narrative. The film's production quality is high end, capturing the grandeur of the Maratha empire with impressive set design and war sequences. The last 45 minutes of the movie, particularly the brutal torture scenes, are deeply moving, reminiscent of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004) in intensity and emotional weight. The cinematography does justice to the historical setting, while the battle sequences are visually stunning. However, a more dynamic visual style and fast cuts in the edit somehow confused the narrative at times. The first half feels stretched, and a sharper screenplay would have heightened the tension. A good watch. Genre: Period, action drama Starring: Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty Rating : ****

Shah Rukh Khan's home Mannat a symbol of dreams for millions, says 'Chhava' actor

Actor Vineet Kumar Singh has described Shah Rukh Khan's home, Mannat, as a powerful symbol of dreams for millions of people around the world. In an exclusive interview with IANS, the actor expressed his admiration for the way SRK's mansion represents hope, success, and perseverance. Vineet said for many, Mannat isn't just a lavish home but a tangible reminder of the possibility of achieving greatness, no matter where one starts. Vineet highlighted that the house stands as a testament to Shah Rukh Khan's extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to becoming a global superstar. He emphasised how Mannat embodies the aspirations of countless individuals who dream of making it big in the film industry, seeing the house as an enduring symbol of how hard work and determination can turn dreams into reality. Sharing his thoughts on nepotism, the 'Chhava' actor shared, "I don't see nepotism in an extreme way. In my personal life, I have observed this trend across professions. In Banaras, where I come from, I have seen many doctors' children becoming doctors, engineers' children pursuing engineering, and businessmen's children taking over their family businesses. Parents naturally want to pass on their knowledge and resources to their children.' Vineet added, "The same happens in the film industry. If a star's child enters films, it's not their fault. Parents always strive to give the best to their children, whether it's education, career opportunities, or guidance. However, real talent finds its way. An underdog who rises from nowhere to achieve something great gives hope to many others. That's why Shah Rukh Khan's house, Mannat, is not just a home – it is a symbol of dreams and determination for countless people.' The actor is currently riding high on the success of his recent releases, "Superboys of Malegaon" and "Chhava." Speaking about the overwhelming response, Vineet shared, "Honestly, I have never experienced anything quite like this in my life. It feels surreal. Sometimes, I even find myself questioning whether this is truly happening. Everywhere I go, I can sense that people have seen and appreciated my work. That brings me immense happiness. Right now, with back-to-back promotions, 'Superboys of Malegaon' has been released just two weeks after 'Chhava'. Once I get some time to reflect, I will truly absorb everything. But at this moment, I am incredibly happy.'
